["JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: An ectophile did a very nice thing I don't know if he wants to be named, so I won't, but he's a very nice person. He was going to buy a CD for someone, who turned out not to need one bought for them. I told him about some sob stories I'd been hearing, people who wanted the CD but couldn't afford it right now (poor college student, just lost a job, too many bills) and half-jokingly, half-seriously, said I should start a "Needy Happy Fan" drive, and that he could pay for the CD he was going to pay for anyway, and donate it to one of the deprived Happy fans. I realized later that it was a pretty rude thing for me to suggest, but he did it! He bought a CD and said to give it to someone I thought needed it. I had someone in mind and sent it to them with the last batch. I just thought that was really really nice of him, when he could have just ignored me and I certainly would have understood. So thanks, nice person. I know the Happy fan who will receive the CD is going to be surprised and very very greatful! The CD signed to "Dave" is still available. I have someone I could send it to, but I haven't promised it to them. If anyone who really wants it to go to David Letterman, wants to pay for it I'll hold it for that purpose, (Mike, you offered?) but otherwise it makes me nervous, sitting there on the dining room table, unpaid. If I don't hear from anyone in the next day, I'm going to send it off to the Happy fan Dave. (Btw, I did hear from and mailed the signed CD to the original Dave, so I have no more "Dave" CDs. The phantom Dave is the last one.) Happy herself doesn't mind if a CD were to be sent to Letterman. She can't imagine why Letterman might want her on his show, but she's open to the idea. I mentioned to her that some fans were thinking about putting together a press kit for her, and she was genuinely perplexed as to why we thought she needed one. *bop* I don't know if Tim's still thinking about working on a press kit...? The way his amazing article about ectophiles was absolutely ignored by ectophiles, I wouldn't blame him at all if he figured, why bother? A nice surprise, besides Find Me, Happy also sent CD Baby The Keep, so that'll soon be available there too. She told me that next up to go to them were Warpaint and Ecto. Some great thoughts here, Robert. Extremely well-written (much like Tim's review, which I also should have commented on, and I will -- to Tim w/ a copy to Vickie at the very least.) > I have spent a good deal of my spare time over the past fifteen > years pondering Happy's popular obfuscation. Strong melodies, > pungent lyrics, and a voice that shines to the heavens (as well as > below!). I wonder if it might be my fault. I think more than a few of us on this list could cop to that one. ;) > I have a history of being out of kilter with the musical tastes of > the masses. Last night I happened to be out with a few people I don't really know. When we tried to talk about music, I spoke a completely different language. Now, granted, I am on this list. (Maybe that says it all, but I'll go on, just to give him a break.) I went to college at Manhattan School of Music, which at the time didn't even have dorms, let alone frats, etc. I have a weird music job and I am a self-proclaimed geek. I was older than the rest of the gang by about a decade overall. But there are a LOT of musicians I love that I am fully aware have a younger audience. I know this for a fact b/c I see them at concerts and clubs. Plus, I'm not ancient by any means. (I keep telling myself that, so I'm sticking with it!) I tried, unsuccessfully, to define the kind of music I like to one guy. I figured "use the big guns" & mentioned Tori Amos. He looked at me, squinted as if painfully reaching far into the vast emptiness of his brain, and said, "Oh yeah. She had that song... What was it?" I rambled off every song that could possibly ever have been played ever on any station. When I mentioned "God" -- thinking of all the press that got, especially w/ the video, he thought I was talking about Joan Osborne. "Oh, is she 'What if God was one of us'?" Tori didn't even rate that well. All he could do was sort of place the name, and I'm not sure if he was lying just to shut me up. What really mystified me was that he then rambled off a ton of names from crap to crap and back again, and I recognized every single one of them. I don't *like* all of them, but I *knew* them all, and I could probably thump out a tune by each if pressed. I wondered why that was. I do listen to a LOT of music, and I can't help but hear some music b/c I work in clubs a lot, and they play the top pop stuff, so it gets into my brain whether I want it there or not. But overall, I think we ectophiles tend to pay attention to music, good or bad. We remember it, perhaps b/c we do pay attention, or maybe we have different ears or something! In any event, we remember it and we care about it. We even care that the shitty shit shit muzak ends up on the charts and on our TVs and in our stereos despite how carefully we may shroud them. > I won't get into what passes for popular music these days. Maybe I > will. I stand by the fact that we know a lot about "popular music" by pointing out that Robert knows how to spell "Christina Aguilera." Or maybe, like once happened to me, he was corrected by his Outlook Express! Yep, it spanks me every time I spell my own name, but it corrected me when I misspelled that woman's name. She has made it into the MS dictionary. Maybe that's as telling as it gets. That reminds me of something that Sue Trowbridge blogged about the Black Eyed Peas way back in 2005. (I was immersed in her blog, linking from year to year to year after reading about Globalquerque! the other day. I suggest you stay away unless you have a lifetime to keep going back and reading more.) So, I apologize to Sue for not getting her approval before quoting her, and I leave it with her words, b/c they are the best way to describe pop music that I can think of: "Everybody loves to talk about cheesy hits of the 70s, but I feel I need to recognize the fine fromage that the music industry is cranking out in our own era. I am referring to the Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps," which is so hypnotically awful that it goes well beyond run-of-the-mill badness and into the realm of genuine brilliance. Just listen to these lyrics, which are rapped by Fergie, the fashion-challenged BEP frontwoman, in a sing-songy voice: "I'm-a get, get, get, get, you drunk, get you love drunk off my hump. You love my lady lumps!" All in all, it makes one long for the quiet dignity of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" or Kelis's "Milkshake." -- Sue Trowbridge, famous ectophile, blogger and 125 records co-owner, October 2005 Be well, Ella ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind. ~ Dr. Seuss ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2007 18:34:47 -0700 From: "Sue Trowbridge" Subject: Re: Last call for the "Dav..." "Ignored" in that if someone in the future were reading back ecto archives, they'd assume no one paid attention, because no one, not one single person, commented on it. It's nice that you and Sue and Ella read it, perhaps others did too, but we out here reading the posts on ecto had no idea. I did't want comments about the article to be forced, simply because I said something, but I was beginning to feel really bad for Tim. He worked and worked on that article, and it's so nice and says such nice things about ecto and ectophiles (not to mention how nice it was of Hande at The Prog Files to put it up), but when I read ecto, it's as if no one even saw the link. I don't know what's to discuss either, unless it's a hijack about Tim's rose-colored glasses, but something, anything, is better than nothing.
