She's young and says "like, totally" which apparently is incorrect for a singer of melancholy folk and death at sea. "I'm only 26! I was born in the age of neon!" Marissa protested. A reviewer griped that she should have ridden on stage on a unicorn, which gets her genre, like, totally wrong. Carried onstage in the arms of a drowned lover or the beak of a giant black bird perhaps. When Marissa's personality broke through in youthful chatter it added to the music, to me, because it gave contrast to songs with similar tempos, similar delicate guitar picking, and similar echoing voices. Songs blended into one another, like a 100 verse 'Boots of Spanish leather'. She slipped Townes Van Zandt's 'Tecumseh Valley' into the middle of one song without altering the meandering pacing. Marissa's consistency is a strength too - she discovered early that reverb is gorgeous and ghostly with her crystal voice. With just her guitar, voice and microphone effects Marissa creates a full ethereal sound. Samey, but beautiful samey so that's ok :) And when one knows more of the songs, they start to distinguish themselves. Looking forward to seeing her again. It's going to take time to get used to the new track order... Vickie commented that she thought maybe the old songs had been remixed a bit. I've noticed changes in "Can't Let Go", which has a new, longer ending, as well as in "Chosen One." I remember the first time I listened to the sampler. I was well familiar with "Chosen One," having heard it live or on live recordings a number of times (first time I heard it was at EctoFest West) so I was excited at the idea of having a proper studio recording. But that first listen to the version on the sampler was quite a disappointment to me. While the song was the same, and as beautiful as I remembered, there was this bizarre electronic noise mixed into the chorus that made it sound choppy (and not in a good "Ninth Wave" sort of way). I eventually got used to it, but it always seemed like an odd production choice. Well, somebody up on that farm must have agreed with me, as the new version is beautiful! As far as I can tell so far, it's identical, but the volume of the electronic noise in the chorus has been dropped way, way down; it's no longer distracting! Yay! "Little Brother" is totally cool, and probably the most danceable HTR song I've heard. I'm also really excited by "Queen," which has rather cool lyrics to go with the really cool music! Love the use of the low voice and the distortion. "Treehouse" hasn't leapt out at me on first listen the other two new tracks have, though I've found that that matters little in the long run, particularly with Happy's music. The cover of the album is...interesting. Basically it's a not-very-flattering self portrait pencil sketch with sketches of various monsters hiding in Happy's hair. Best I can come up with is it's a visual representation of "One in Many" and/or "She Won't Go." jeff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2007 17:33:49 -0400 From: Greg Dunn Subject: Re: CDs mailed today Woohoo! But I have to say I think this is the strongest recording of her career. If Happy's had any fault (it's not even a fault, really. Just a characteristic that, like all characteristics, imposes certain limits) in the past, it's been that her production style tended to be very even and atmospheric... Whereas I feel like here, the production is being used more to shape the songs. They arc, they have drama. That extra flourish intercedes at exactly the right moment to move the listener into the next section of the song, emotionally. The title track, in particular, blows me the fuck away. It's as good (better?) and as emotionally intense as Kate's "Hello Earth," (even uses a similar chant-like backing vocal) one of my all-time top ten songs. "She Won't Go" is my favorite up-tempo (love that synth she uses), and "Here and Herafter" and "Can't Let Go" are the other songs I can't put down. On the whole, it's (even) more haunting, (even) more melodic, and (even) more varied than I've ever heard from her before. If I have one complaint (and it's minor), it's that I question the sequencing... All of the really transcendent tracks are front (or really, more like middle) -loaded, so that the album sort of tapers. Although I must confess that my own personal bias is always to frontload with catchy uptempo and backload with searing ballads (I don't like albums that are two upsy-downsy... My big problem with Patty Griffin's "Children Running Through" this year). Nonetheless, I still feel like a song like "Find Me" is far too climactic to place as Track 3. It should be 11. But that's just my amateur's opinion. ~tim On 9/14/07 4:34 PM, "Jeffrey Burka" wrote: > Just got done with my first listen to the new disc (thanks, Vickie! > it arrived in DC from Chicago pretty durned quick!) > > It's going to take time to get used to the new track order... > > Vickie commented that she thought maybe the old songs had been remixed > a bit. Cover art) Oh, and re: the cover art. I love it. As a "quality" music listener, hand-drawn art always makes me stop and take a second look, b/c it's usually a signal that the album was recorded by an *ahem* serious artist. Whereas that flashy glamour shot usually signals dreck. Unfortunately, I do question the font, which is one of those that's grossly overused by amateur designers... It's the kind of thing you usually see on a Reiki specialist's flyer on a tackboard in a Woodstock, NY coffee shop. At least it's not Comic Sans. Have you all seen the cover art on Noe's album? I think it's one of the most stunning album covers I've ever seen. It's also a perfect representation of the intricacy and beauty of the music within.
