Subject: Metric System On the metric system that everybody was just discussing (along with = dates and all)... Kilo prototype mysteriously loses weight By JAMEY KEATEN, Associated Press Writer Wed Sep 12, 1:00 PM ET=20 PARIS - A kilogram just isn't what it used to be.=20 The 118-year-old cylinder that is the international prototype for the = metric mass, kept tightly under lock and key outside Paris, is = mysteriously losing weight - if ever so slightly. Physicist Richard = Davis of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres, = southwest of Paris, says the reference kilo appears to have lost 50 = micrograms compared with the average of dozens of copies. "The mystery is that they were all made of the same material, and many = were made at the same time and kept under the same conditions, and yet = the masses among them are slowly drifting apart," he said. "We don't = really have a good hypothesis for it." The kilogram's uncertainty could affect even countries that don't use = the metric system - it is the ultimate weight standard for the U.S. = customary system, where it equals 2.2 pounds. For scientists, the = inconstant metric constant is a nuisance, threatening calculation of = things like electricity generation. "They depend on a mass measurement and it's inconvenient for them to = have a definition of the kilogram which is based on some artifact," said = Davis, who is American. But don't expect the slimmed-down kilo to have any effect, other than = possibly envy, on wary waistline-watchers: 50 micrograms is roughly = equivalent to the weight of a fingerprint. "For the lay person, it won't mean anything," said Davis. "The kilogram = will stay the kilogram, and the weights you have in a weight set will = all still be correct." Of all the world's kilograms, only the one in Sevres really counts. It = is kept in a triple-locked safe at a chateau and rarely sees the light = of day - mostly for comparison with other cylinders shipped in = periodically from around the world. "It's not clear whether the original has become lighter, or the national = prototypes have become heavier," said Michael Borys, a senior researcher = with Germany's national measures institute in Braunschweig. "But by = definition, only the original represents exactly a kilogram." The kilogram's fluctuation shows how technological progress is leaving = science's most basic measurements in its dust. The cylinder was = high-tech for its day in 1889 when cast from a platinum and iridium = alloy, measuring 1.54 inches in diameter and height. At a November meeting of scientists in Paris, an advisory panel on = measurements will present possible steps toward basing the kilogram and = other measures - like Kelvin for temperature, and the mole for amount - = on more precise calculations. Ultimately, policy makers from around the = world would have to agree to any change. Many measurements have undergone makeovers over the years. The meter was = once defined as roughly the distance between scratches on a bar, a far = cry from today's high-tech standard involving the distance that light = travels in a vacuum. One of the leading alternatives for a 21st-century kilogram is a sphere = made out of a Silicon-28 isotope crystal, which would involve a single = type of atom and have a fixed mass. "We could obviously use a better definition," Davis said. I don't think he would have been as compelled to post the exchange if I hadn't been such an insufferable bitch in email. Tim is right though, it was done out of concern for Happy. I may be a bitch at times, but my motives are pure (and yes, I realize how stupid that sounds). Anyway, all is well. Ellen ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2007 11:45:35 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Early warning: next wave of orders (more CDs!) Don't write me yet. I'll put out the call when I'm ready. This is just a heads up and some musings. Happy will be sending me a box of CDs to send out to people and I should have them by next week. I'll post when I do have them. Those who didn't get to me in time for the Cambrige run, or who wanted extras but only got their one signed CD, can get them from me. A few things: Happy thinks I'm charging too little for postage, because she always sends things out via Priority Mail. Personally I don't see much of a difference between Priority and First Class in terms of getting the CD to where it's going. Express or Overnight, yeah, but Priority? First class is not media mail, after all. It goes by air, not ground. I've been sending CDs out via First Class. It would help if those I've sent CDs to already would tell me (and/or post) when they receive the CDs. That would be a guage as to how fast First Class is. I might leave it up to the buyer, I haven't decided. For domestic (US) delivery, it would mean a difference of a few dollars (say, $4.65 instead of $1.84 as an example). International Priority is, however, freaking insane. I just checked costs to Germany and First Class airmail was $4.50, whereas Priority was $20.00. I said if you're going to pay that much you might as well tack on a few dollars and get it sent Express, which was $25.00. If you were getting these from Happy herself she would charge for and send Priority no matter what. I could do the same, but as I said, I haven't decided. Second, Happy wants me to charge $2.00 instead of the $1.00 I've been tacking on for packing/handling. She's going to be sending me her own mailers to send the 2nd wave of CDs in, so no more bubble packs. Bottom line, the 2nd wave buyers are going to be paying slightly more than the 1st wave buyers. Sorry about that. Happy is NOT going to be selling these herself, at least not in the near future, so if you want a CD (or some CDs) before CD Baby has them, you'll have to get them from me. If you want to wait for CD Baby that's fine. Keep in mind though that CD Baby charges a flat $4 (I believe) for shipping, and takes $4.00 from the $15.00 selling price. Getting them from me, you'd be paying Happy directly and she'd get 100% of the money (less shipping costs, of course). I'll keep track of the UPS truck after she sends the CDs and when I know they're on their way I'll post again with specific details. I don't want a wave of payments now because I'm still working on the 1st wave people (which, if any are reading and haven't yet paid and/or sent me their address, please do so). Of course, it is a given that when in such a situation, either the location you are trying to find was 100' in the direction that you did not initially choose, OR that the location was 100' past where you decided to turn around. My favorite song from "Secret Knots" is actually "Tower," which no one here ever seems to mention (with Midsummer Night's Dream running a close second). The syncopated, drama-inflected piano part is very early Tori. I also love the kind of naked emotional intensity of "In the Dark," when Noe sort of deliberately lets her voice dip and break as she sings, "I remember when I was a kid. Feeling 'bout unicorns the way I did-" "Summer Storm Journals" is definitely album-of-the-year material. Noe keeps talking about how much she learned about production and arrangement this time around, and how much labor she put into crafting this recording, and you can really hear that. If God is in the details, these details are beyond heavenly. (You might even say that, Like Ra, she's been a BUSY GOD. Ba-dum-bum). Beyond "Ice Dragons," listen to the piano runs and horns in my favorite track, "Army of Nows." Completely amazing. Also listen to track 7 (can't remember name), and to the one with the crickets, where she has that one chill-inducing piano chord that sounds exactly the one in Laura Nyro's "Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp." ~tim On 9/13/07 11:04 PM, "Ken Descoteaux" wrote: > Andrew McMichael wrote: >> Ken - Thanks to yourself and your wife for the kindly accepted offer of a >> lift to my hotel after the show.
