R! R!... SL! SL! SL!... P! P! P!... AA! AA! AA!... Just got back from a fabulous weekend in Boston and I must get to bed as I have to work in a few short hours. Here are a few quick thoughts off the top of my head though: - - It was a real pleasure to put faces to so many of the names I've seen here over the years. The pre-show dinner was a great idea, I hope I managed to say hello to everyone. - - I was surprised to meet at least one couple in the audience who claimed to be fans of Happy but had no idea about the Ecto mailing list. One was a lovely young blonde woman who asked me where we got the name tags. Robert, do you know how many other off-list people may have attended, other than as invited guests of the performers and list members? - - On that topic, I take responsibility for my invited guest who good-naturedly heckled a few times, during the movie quiz for one. Happy's reaction was priceless when he suggested that if she'd asked an easier question we might have participated, though. I should add that this was his introduction to all the artists that night, and he thoroughly enjoyed them all. - - Noe's performance was probably the best one I've seen from her. I've witnessed her and Greta performing together before but the chemistry between them on this night was simply magical. I got to listen to Noe's new CD on the way home too - it flows more like a movie score than a normal album but I think I'd better let it sink in a bit more before I gush too much. I'm sure it will at least be in my top 5 for the year. - - I nearly passed out from the heat during Casey's set. That was me pouring a bottle of water over my head at the end of it. Do you know Boston tied its record for the hottest temperature on September 8 in history, at 95 degrees? That's it for my ramblings tonight. She's so gracious, and took the time to speak to anyone who wanted a word. I knew she was tired at the end of her set, but she made a real effort and I think everyone appreciated that. I'm determined not to miss the next one ... which means doing it myself. ;) There is a venue here in the New Haven area called The Space (www.thespace.tk) where I know I can produce anything at any time, I just haven't had the chance yet. At Ectofest, hearing Happy live for the first time, I was struck by her middle tones. Happy's voice would be gorgeous even without her impressive range. Her ability to sing high & low gives her a midrange that doesn't get weak at either end. At the concert when she approached her lower notes from above, I'd feel like deep strings were vibrating in sympathy, like a hardanger fiddle. Which songs of Happy's have the most limited range? I can't tear myself away from 'Find me' and 'Summer storm journals' to answer that one myself. It must be tempting for her to write for every note. I was born in the US and lived here most of my life, but I had to use the military date format about 40 years ago, I got so used to it I still use it today, day-month-year, this was also "normal" living in several other countries. If you have a Windows computer (in the US) you might assume you are stuck with month-day-year, but you're not... 1. go to Control Panel 2. go to Regional and Language Options 3. on "Regional Options" click "Customize" 4. on "Customize" click "Date", there you can change the date to several different formats. 5. on "Customize" you can also change "Time", for those of you who prefer 24-hour time. But I'm hearing a lot more where she transitions back and forth between and betwixt ranges in really impressive ways. (Favorite line from tonight's Countdown with Keith Olbermann: They originally wanted a mirrored set for the MTV award show, but when Britney rehearsed there, she asked, Who's the fat chick?) As formulaic popcorn American TV goes, the original CSI is not too bad. Ya gotta consider the blathering hordes who do tune in to the thing. Mass appeal usually turns me off too, but some are worth tuning in to. I watch the Miami CSI too because I like to know what's hip in oversaturated gratuitous multi-frame images. I watch BG too. That is the top tier of TV viewing currently, sad that so few realize that. Concert: Casey is a powerhouse vocalist, and her work is more Ecto than I think some of us expected. It does follow very conventional pop structures, but she stands out as a vocal stylist. There's one thing she does that sounds almost exactly like Jewel, but in a good way (most comparisons to Jewel I see as negatives). I do wonder whether it's the kind of voice that might sound a little bit too showboaty for my taste when committed to record. Will see what I think after listening to the album. She's definitely quite commercially viable, not only in her sound, but also in her sex appeal, which is unfortunately remains necessary for success as a female artist in the mainstream pop world. But I won't hold it against her. For now, anyway. It will be interesting to see how she develops. Noe was absolutely freaking awesome and blew me away. I feel like she's really in a super-rich creative stage as an artist, and working to create really complex, beautiful and revelatory work. I'm always impressed that she creates songs with such texture and variation while having a voice and guitar technique that on the surface seem rather basic. Greta's piano and vocal work complimented Noe perfectly, really giving her a rich, composed sound that's more in keeping with the layering on her new album (listen to the piano runs on "Army of Nows" ASAP!!!!!). Although some of my favorite moments actually featured Noe on the piano. There's a song on her new album involving cricket noises that has these dark, evocative minor-key (I believe) chords that for me channeled two of my favorite tracks from Laura Nyro's "Christmas and the Beads of Sweat," "Map to the Treasure" and "Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp." She also made a lot of really wonderful comments about herself as part of a community of artists like Happy who appreciate real beauty and are committed to creating "beautiful, complex music," and talked about the time when she discovered Happy, looking for models for her own work, and dragged her (equally incomparable) friend Reba Hasko across the country to hear Happy play. I loved finally seeing and meeting Happy. She's devastatingly funny! I think her perfectionism and concern for the quality of her sound really sets her apart from most folks. Since I've listened more to her synthy albums, it was really great to experience some of her earlier work. Her exchanges with Vickie (front row center, of course), who she accused of heckling her "Are you heckling me?? How long have I known you!?" It was classic.) were some of the highlights of the show. When I hear Happy on record, I always find it difficult to fathom that all these sounds are coming from the same person. I thought seeing her live might reconcile this a bit, but it actually doesn't. It's no less astounding and freakish. In this case, freakish is a very good thing. Y'all should also be aware that she stuck around the club after the show until almost 1:30 (missing the opportunity for food with Noe and Greta) to sign and personalize 40 copies of "Find Me" for the list of Ectophiles Vickie brought. She's a true saint. The Hang-out Time: OF course at least one third of my reason for going was to meet others from this so very dynamic community of fans. I was drawn to the Ectophiles list because, in an era when most folks just sit back passively receiving mass culture, we're seeking out underappreciated and truly culturally transformative music, we're sharing it with one another, we're creating, thanks to Neile, Joann and Anna Maria, one of the most comprehensive and impressive archives of amateur criticism that I've ever seen. On that note, I loved meeting and bonding with Vickie & Chris, Andrew, Henning, Robert, Jessica, Paul, Karen and others. Happy can count a lot of really special, 100 percent original people amongst her fanbase. Noe, during her set, described us as being part of a very special group of a few hundred people lucky enough to know about true beauty, which is very rare in the world. And I think we need to think about that as a responsibility as well as a privilege. These artists need us to help them make their art viable. It's no use if they can't afford to make more. Don't keep the secret... Spread it!! Let's make the next Ectofest more than a gig. Let's make it an explosion, a cultural happening, something that can not only cover its costs but that also changes the world in which we live by making it a more beautiful and less apathetic place. ~tim ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #241 ***************************
