I drove from Connecticut. Why does Boston mark the path to I-90 with itty bitty signs the size of postcards, until you are already on the entrance ramp? My previous trip to Boston I got lost for hours trying to make up for one wrong turn. Fortunately this time I fared much better, despite thinking "I'm lost, I'm lost" for about 20 minutes). For those who could not make it, I think the singular event you will regret missing was the audience sing-along version of Wretches Gone Awry. Priceless. A great show all told. Kudos to Robert for pulling it off. The heat was a significant inconvenience, but no one fainted (to my knowledge), so I guess it was just that. Felt good to get into the air conditioned car, though. Finally got to really meet Vickie (we met ultra-briefly at meth&woj's HR HoM show a couple years back). She was handing out nametags, but I guess she was behind with the list when I arrived because I didn't get one. Like Martin Mull used to say: As usual, the tragically hip are excused. (Meaning me--hah!) At any rate, I was one of the two people with a camera with a big white lens. Jeff W was the other. For a variety of reasons, I had seriously curtailed my music buying the last couple years, so I can say I probably bought nearly a year's worth at my current pace at that show alone. I had a feeling that was going to happen. Here's hoping the ectofest concept can once again rise to become a quasi-regular event again. I know it's asking alot, these are not money makers, but they always get such great acts and such a great audience, how can we not try to pony up every year or so? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2007 00:37:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Alberto Subject: Re: Any early returns? As I recall, CD Baby was the most artists-friendly of the bunch (she said it was far preferable to other retailers) and iTunes next best, with Amazon being the absolute worst... I think I'm remembering correctly. Might be wrong about itunes, but remember clearly that cdbaby was decent and amazon horrid. Of course, as Vickie said, direct from artist is always preferable, and I would imagine (non-bouncing) check, money order or cash (in person) would be best for them, having seen how credit card processing fees can really stack up. I'm also becoming more aware of just how important it is that super-independent artists sell their albums, simply to cover the debt they rack up recording them. I think we should all consider buying multiple copies of our favorite artists' albums as gifts for friends and relatives. tim On 9/7/07 10:41 AM, "Xenu's Sister" wrote: > --- Doug wrote: > >> Which purchase method brings Happy personally the biggest cut of the >> money? I can see the Cat Ppwer comparison a little bit in terms of tone and texture, but I'd say Natasha is far less narcoleptic than Chan Marshall. I'd say "My Brightest Diamond" (which is basically a woman named Shara Worden, in rotating arrangements with various collaborators) is a better comparison, if you've heard them. My Brightest Diamond's "Bring me the Workhorse" came out last year... Both Shara and Natasha have strong, trained voices, and are trying to merge classical and pop/rock impulses. In the artful, moody Ectoish way, not the cornball, yuck-yuck, my-ears-are-bleeding Josh Groban/Il Divo kind of way. Both albums are strong, but neither *quite* live up to my expectations for them. They're really, really good (which is saying a lot), but not thrilling. I think it's an issue of songwriting, composition and production not offering as many surprises as I believe they're capable of. ~tim On 9/8/07 6:41 PM, "morayati@email.unc.edu" wrote: > I almost never find out about new music when I'm trying to. I was able to save what I'd written as a text file on Chris's desktop. We're now staying with our friends in Winthrop (who unfortunately have no interest in Happy, or any ecto music, and pretty much ho-hummed when I played a couple of songs from The Keep to try and explain why we traveled halfway across the country to see her...ah well, what can you do) and I'm on Chris's laptop again for a few minutes. I may not be able to get online again until after we get back to Chicago. Anyway, here's what I wrote this afternoon: =========================================================== I'm sitting at a cafe with Robert Bristow-Johnson, Andrew McMichael, Tim Jones-Yelvington and Chris. Henning Rech just left to go to the airport. We're sitting around talking and Chris hooked his laptop and got online via Bluetooth using his Treo. I love technology! I love being married to a geek! We're off soon but I just wanted to say hi to everyone. The Show was AMAZING. Way too short, but of course I could listen to Happy sing for hours. Chris will probably be able to get a couple/few songs (videos) uploaded after we get back Monday evening before he has to leave again Tuesday afternoon. At the very least, I'll make sure he gets the Wretches sing-along up. I was practically on the floor, having giggle fits at the very thought. Happy was having a grand old time, and her voice is at the top of its game, witnessed by her doing several of her older songs (including The Revelation, Rainkeeper(!!), The First To Cry, To The Funnyfarm, The Suicide Song, If So, For We Believe, and Wretches) and sounding just as clear and beautiful as she did back when she first recorded them. She didn't focus on the new album as much as I thought, but I think she directed this show to Ectophiles with so many old songs. She knew the audience would be full of long-time fans. I didn't write down a set list as it was happening, but I'll get one when I listen back to the show in the next couple of days. Other songs she did were (not in this order) Save Our Souls, Look For The Child, When the Rain Came Down, Fall, The Chosen One, Possessed, Collective Heart, Feed The Fire...the usual. I might be missing something but I will get an actual list. I HAVE CDs for everyone who wrote me! Including people who wrote me later Saturday night*, because I had Chris check my email with his Treo. Lisa from KC, you're covered :) I haven't had a chance to get back to everyone individually, but I will. Happy sat there for at least a half-hour, signing autographs. It was fun because a bunch of people started an assembly line opening CDs while I stood there feeding her names and marking them off my list. When I get home I'll have to find some envelopes in bulk so I can send them all out (49 of them!!). I'll get them in the mail this week, I promise. If you wrote me, write back with addresses (if you haven't given yours to me already). I have to go because the laptop's battery is threatening me. More later. I hope others chime in with their stories. THANK YOU ROBERT! FIND ME! YAY! Vickie ==================================================== An addition is that I got a couple of emails today from people who were on the digest and didn't see the notice in time. If you wrote me anytime Saturday, I've almost certainly got you covered, but if you didn't write me until today (Sunday), I'm afraid to say that I didn't get extra CDs to bring home, sorry. I'm terribly sorry that it was such short notice. The digest folks especially were caught in that, but I couldn't announce it until Happy got her shipment in, to make sure that she actually would have CDs there, so it wasn't anyone's fault, just bad, short, timing. However, Happy is going to mail me a box so I can send more out. I'm very unclear as to whether Happy is going to sell these CDs herself, like through her store, which has been having a lot of problems recently. I'll try to get that cleared up. In the meantime, the only thing I can tell people who didn't get in on this advance CD run is to hold tight. I'll do what I can to see that you have access to CDs as soon as possible (which means, before CD Baby has it). One more item to those who wrote me up to and including Saturday about getting them a CD. I said above that I need to buy bubble envelopes in bulk so I can start sending them out, but I can't send them out until Happy has been paid. And, uh, I totally forgot to ask Happy how much she was going to charge for them. I didn't have to pay for these in advance, she trusts me, and just let me walk away from the venue with 50 signed CDs in my bag, and money never came up. I'll write Happy about the cost per CD and get back to you all as soon as I can. I do know that she will take PayPal though. When I get an amount I'll give you the cost. If you pay by PayPal (and I'll tell you where to send the money) I'll send out the CDs if you forward me the PayPal receipt. If you'd rather pay by check or money order, I'll give you the information where to send it, and I'll send out the CD when Happy tells me she's received the check/money order. (checks will probably have to clear the bank, that's how she's done it in the past). So obviously, PayPal will be the quickest. I'll also ask her about International PayPal. I know people in other countries can send money via PayPal, but I also think that Happy pays a fee for the conversion. It's been so long since the Find Me Sampler I can't remember how that worked or if the policy has changed. I'll get all the information as soon as I can. I know you're all impatient and I want these to get to you as quickly as they can. So, anyway, as I said above, if you've written me about a CD, write me again and give me your full name and address. Tell me in that letter if you plan to pay by PayPal or check/money order. If PayPal I'll write you back with the amount, and Happy's PayPal email account address to use. If check/money order I'll write you back with an amount, and Happy's snail mail address to use. I won't write anyone until I get the CD cost from Happy, and you almost certainly won't hear from me until Monday night or Tuesday sometime. Be patient, I've got your back. (and your CD, which I know you want asap). The new songs are totally brilliant, of course! Two of the songs are about us (fans), I do believe! I have the lyrics ready to go up on ecto.org but they're on my home computer so that will have to wait for my return to Chicago also. It was wonderful to meet everybody, Haveli's went perfectly (and thanks to those who put in extra money when they didn't even have to), the show was magical, I'm a very happy woman! Yes, I've been hearing what was obviously Kate Bush on the ads for several days, it could have been nobody else, she has such a distinctive style, it's so wonderful to hear on network TV... I've never seen CSI before (I usually watch only the news on network TV), but now I'm intrigued enough to give this program a try (smile). - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2007 00:35:42 -0500 From: Timothy Jones-Yelvington Subject: Re: R! R! R!... SL! SL! SL!... P! P! P!... AA! AA! AA!... I LOVED her hair. She's much sexier than I realized. Never liked the goofy long-w/ bangs beatnik hair she had in most of the shots I've seen. Far more intelligent responses to the fest still forthcoming. ~tim On 9/9/07 6:47 PM, "neal copperman" wrote: > Nice photos Mike. Thanks for posting!
