As a surprise, my boyfriend contacted Emily (they're both Oberlin alums and have some shared connections) and scheduled lunch with her. It was a wonderful afternoon. She was immensely warm and personable, and we had some really stimulating conversations about the challenges of recording and performing as a woman, an independent musician and as someone whose work doesn't entirely conform to the conventions/expectations of the avant garde, mainstream pop, indie pop or jazz worlds. Am working on writing some of this up for my blog. She also gave me, as a gift!, a copy of Noe Venable's new album "The Summer Storm Journals" so I can listen to it before I go to Boston. Anyway... She asked me what I thought was a really provocative question about whether I'm drawn to her work more intellectually (ie recognizing its complexity) or emotionally. With my women's studies-addled brain, I tend to think about the polarization of emotion and intellect primarily in terms of "Western" patriarchy, connected with a lot of similar and heavily f-ed up binaries like nature/culture, masculinity/femininity, self/other, civilized/primitive, etc. On an individual level, I've never entirely understood this split... I believe that the distinction between the emotional and the intellectual is primarily a socially constructed, analytical distinction (as a prof/mentor of mine once wrote in the margin of one of my papers, after I used the expression "arbitrary distinction" -- all distinctions are arbitrary)... I'm a very heady person, and get very emotionally charged about ideas. What I think and what I feel seem very closely aligned inside my brain, and difficult to disentangle from one another. Anyway -- this conversation got me wondering whether the integration of emotion and intellect isn't part of what Ectophiles are drawn to... And maybe also part of why intelligent and emotive female artists are marginalized? What do y'all think? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 10:57:11 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Getting together before the show...change of plans Forget the S&S, they never answered my inqury email and I've had it confirmed that they are indeed very strict about everybody being there before seating takes place. Does everyone like Indian food? I've made reservations at Haveli, an Indian restaurant down the street, at 1248 Cambridge St. I talked to the manager on the phone and he's very easy with people coming late or drifting through. I made a reservation for 30 at 5:00pm Saturday the 8th of September. Here's the menu: http://royalbharatinc.com/royalbharatincwebsite_016.htm It's not cheap cheap but it's not outrageous either. All I ask is that people please, PLEASE keep close track of what they eat, especially appetizers and drinks, and also allow extra for tips. It's the nature of the beast when a large group of people get together that they can lose track of their tab and then leave and don't put enough into the pot, completely innocently. When the tab is tallied there's a shortfall, and someone is left holding the tab, so to speak. Since the reservations are in my name, that someone is going to be me (and Chris) and we're not likely to have the cash to cover any shortage. I'll be washing dishes in the Haveli kitchen instead of watching the show and that's not good. If we were rich, I'd pay for everybody's meal, but pigs don't fly either. Ok? Please? *whimper* Vickie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 16:29:26 -0700 From: Michael Pearce Subject: Re: Webcasting Ectofest...maybe At 1:55 AM -0400 8/27/07, "Xenu's Sister" wrote: >It's using a program called "Sopcast" which would entail people >who want to watch downloading and installing the client. Best a stubborn guy can offer. Now that we're not at the S&S anymore, that's good enough. I invited Happy to join us. If she's not in the mood to be stared at, maybe she'll send Bob along. I also invited Noe but haven't heard back. He probably gets bugged about it all the time. Since they suggest downloading Windows Media Player, it doesn't sound as if they help Mac users either. > also, if push comes to shove - maybe you can make a dvd of it or post it > on uTube. It probably wouldn't be DVD'able, but you can be assured that parts of it will be on YouTube asap after we get back from MA.
