Bye, Kerry I'll put you on the list in hopes that you'll make it to the S&S, but I'll bet you'll be getting there just before the show starts. You can poke your head in to see if anyone's still there, but if it's after 7, there probably won't be. We'll see you at the show though! While it is foolhardy for me to do so, I must beg to differ here. The New Forest, I'm given to understand, is named so as the Old Forest was cut down and used to build Henry VIII's fleet. He had it replanted, hence the "New", which has stuck. I am perfectly willing to be battered about the head by historical references and links pointing out the error of my ways, but that's what I've always been told. By coincidence, the scenes from "Man for All Seasons" in which Henry sails up the Thames to visit Thomas Moore and then jumps into the mud from his boat were actually filmed in Beaulieu -- not that far from you, is it Ellen? Well, there's also the story that the village of Brockenhurst was named that because that's where the hearse carrying William Rufus' body broke down on its way from his murder site (either by Minstead or Beaulieu) to Winchester. No matter where the murder site was (and historians dispute it), it wouldn't make sense to take it through Brockenhurst. Brockenhurst actually means 'bagder's home'. :) I'm curious as to where you heard this story about the New Forest's name. It was named as William I's new forest -- his own new hunting ground. Many of the oldest trees here were cut down a lot earlier -- in the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age. (We have a triple banked Bronze Age hillfort just up the street from us.) The Nova Foresta (or Foresta Nova) is mentioned by that name in the Domesday book, which is my main reference. :) From the glossary of the Domesday Book online, "With the exception of the New Forest, Domesday does not give names of forests." http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/glossary.html See it named thus in links such as this: http://www.envf.port.ac.uk/hantsgaz/hantsgaz/s0007093.htm If you have a print copy of the Domesday Book at home, as I do, you'll find it mentioned within Hampshire, although in the original book, it was listed separately. It's not in the index, as it's not a town. But it's there. (I checked. :) It's true that Henry VIII did obtain timber from the trees remaining, but he hardly cut it all down. Frankly, it was after Henry VIII that more wood was used, and it was in the 17th and 18th century that the shipbuilding industry became big in Buckler's Hard, near Beaulieu, where the ships used by Nelson's navy were manufactured. It's more that acres and acres of land were taken by the government to use as tree farms, as we'd call them now, for shipbuilding. The New Forest never was a 'forest' in the modern sense of the word. The eymology of the word 'forest' does not have to include dense trees. See http://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/forest.htm for more information. > > By coincidence, the scenes from "Man for All > Seasons" in which Henry sails up the Thames to visit > Thomas Moore and then jumps into the mud from his > boat were actually filmed in Beaulieu -- not that > far from you, is it Ellen? Seven miles down the road. I used to drive past, but not through, Beaulieu when I took the 'back back' way to my former place of employment, outside of the Forest. But now I work in Brockenhurst, literally up the road. :) Ellen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 03:47:12 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Re: New forest (getting way off topic) Man, did I ever ask for THAT! ;-) I've printed your e-mail out, as I'm off to the New Forest (Ringwood) tonight and will show it to my partner, the origin of my 'Enery the 8th story. Her family used to have a rambling house down Buckler's Hard way, so she spent a lot of time down there as a kid and, when she and her then-husband got a second home in South Gorley. I'd be interested to hear where SHE got the story from. Never heard the story about Brockenhurst: even with my appalling education, I know that Brocken was badger (didn't know the hurst=home, though, have to admit, but had guessed) Our local summer fayre/agricultural show was cancelled due to foot and mouth - hope yours are going ahead! Bye, Kerry it's not all busses. in fact, the first "bus" you get on at Logan is the "Silver Line" which is a bus specially adapted to run on electricity on its own separate "track" for the latter half of its trip to South Station, where you change to the "Red Line" which is a bona fide subway that will take you to Central Square, where you walk 600 meters to Inman Square (along Prospect St and Hampshire St). i'll put a note by your name that you might not make it by 7:30 and to hold your space. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 11:11:47 -0400 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: Over the Rhine and others on emusic Over the Rhine's new one has been on emusic since it was released, yey. New Pornographers will be delayed a few months on emusic, which is sensible for CD sales. Maybe keep listening to it, Tim - some people say the apparent mellowness is misleading. Other things I've enjoyed on emusic recently - St Vincent, Ane Brun live, A.C. Newman of the New Pornographers, Lavender Diamond, Mirah and the Spectratone International (cute songs about insects), and Nina Nastasia and Jim White. It looks like they might get the new Joni Mitchell. Wow, this is such great news! I absolutely love Sarah, and What the Sea Wants is one of my favorites from last year too (I bought an import copy). Of course we'll be on our way to Boston when she plays her first NY show on Sept 7th but I'm really looking forward to seeing her on the subsequent dates. I see she'll also be at the Hotel Cafe in L.A. on Sept 26 . Thanks for the tip, Heidi.
