Hi, Well I'm still here, although for most of my eleven year residency on this list (!) I have been reading a lot and writing less. It's weird because for me this mailing list is just about the only way to hear about Happy's work but she hasn't released an album proper pretty much since I started reading the list at this address. I keep ecto on my work address because it's a nice way to start the day. I recently threw out most of my tape cassettes including the gift project ones (I just don't have the space for them anymore), and it broke my heart because even if I didn't listen to them, it felt like throwing away friends. Fortunately you're all still here. Give me a ....well, you get the idea. Yes, I'm still here, although I've often wondered if I might have driven some people off. That's the problem with e-mail: you can't see what a rational, reasonable, thoroughly charming person I really am. Mind you, you also miss out on my rather erratic personal hygiene, so I guess it evens out. I was thinking hard about the Green Note, as I used to know Parkway really well and couldn't think where it was. For a minute, I thought it must be new since we left the area in January, but now I do remember it, on the north side of Parkway, a small, unassuming place from the outside. I remember going past it in the car and thinking, "Hmm, that looks interesting", and then I moved away. GREAT location, right in the heart of Camden, and although most of the names are unfamiliar to me I'll be keeping an eye on this. (Ashamed to say, even, that Caroline Lavelle is new to me. How lame is that?) The state of my musical mind is indicated by the fact that I am currently enjoying both Veda Hille's "Riot Life" EP and -- finally -- the CD remaster of Roy Wood's "Boulders", his first idiosyncratic solo LP from the early 70s, on which he plays all the instruments (including violin, cello, oboe, saxophones, sitar and banjo) bar one, and wanders through folk, pop and dirty-ass rock 'n' roll with wild-eyed glee. It doesn't always work, and hasn't always aged well, but it's good fun. You don't often get to hear a bowl of water being used as a percussive instrument, that's for sure. What's the skinny on PJ Harvey's new album? Anyone know what angle or persona she's taking? I even missed the opportunity to see her play live in Sept -- sure it's sold out by now. My love for her peaked at "T Send You My Love" and the astounding live shows she did back then, but I still wonder what she's going to do next. Coming in Friday (I'm doing the Manchester route -- shuttles only leave every two hours, and I'm paranoid that any delays on Saturday could be calamitous) and leaving Sunday morning. Made reservations at the youth hostel and at the Buckminster (relatively reasonable, relatively/comparatively speaking... Single w/ double bed is $130 a night online) and will see what my finances and mood dictate closer to the date. I'm as excited about witnessing this community as I am about seeing Happy et al. I've got all day Saturday to program.... Would anyone be interested in lunch or early dinner or something before the concert? And does anyone have any can't-miss Boston recommendations. I've been there twice but wouldn't say I know the city particularly well. ~tim ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2007 08:00:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: who's on the list? - --- Richard Messum wrote: > >I saw Great Big Sea in London last night -- good > fun, > > London Ontario? > > Where are you? I'm trying to find a place where a group of us can meet prior to the show. There's a diner/deli-ish place called the "S & S" that, according to the address, seems to be just steps away from the venue. The S & S is at 1334 Cambridge Street The Lily Pad is at 1353 Cambridge Street so it can't be that far away, right? They say on their web site (http://www.sandsrestaurant.com/) that they can accommodate large parties so I've written them to ask about reservations and info. I haven't made the actual reservations yet, since I don't know how many people might show up. Maybe I can get an idea now. If I reserved a spot for around 5-5:30 on Saturday, how many people might want to come to sit, eat and chatter 'til around 7:00ish? I'm going to assume some names in advance, because if Henning and Andrew from Scotland aren't there I'll kick their butts. (that's figurative, since I couldn't kick anyone's butt even if I really really wanted to) Vickie Chris Henning Andrew Timothy(?) Also, they're open until midnight on Saturday so anyone who doesn't need to rush away to catch a bus/train can go there for an aftersnack. It disables Javascript, Flash, and Java by default except for sites which you explicitly whitelist (and provides a handy little toolbar button and popup menu which makes that easy). You can also temporarily permit a particular site's Flash or Java item by clicking on the place where it would be shown. Since you can permanently allow content from particular sites you can immediately see content from sites you're willing to trust, rather than having to click every time. I also find quite a few sites load and display much faster without all the extra crud. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2007 13:24:11 -0400 From: "Jeffrey Burka" Subject: Re: green note/who's on the list? gah.
