I saw Great Big Sea in London last night -- good fun, although sometimes I really think a full drumkit is overkill at the Borderline -- it just really is too much and can take over the voices and other instruments. But, but, but... Big discovery of the night (for us, at least) was Jill Barber. Good evening it was, but I realised I'm getting too old for late nights in London in the middle of the week, particularly when you discover those three horrible words at Waterloo: bus replacement service from Southampton forward. We didn't get home until after 2 AM. Still, I wouldn't mind going to see Caroline Lavelle tomorrow night in London, but I can't make it. :) Ellen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2007 09:41:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Ken Fasimpaur Subject: which ecto a which ecto a ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2007 10:30:14 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: who's on the list? - --- Ellen Rawson wrote: > Still, I wouldn't mind going to see Caroline Lavelle > tomorrow night in London, but I can't make it. :) That's too bad. Above and beyond her own music and voice which, I think, would be well-worth seeing, you could talk to her about Happy. I've been in contact with her on MySpace and she really, truly likes Happy! A year ago when the account was accidentally deleted and I was working to re-build the Friends list, *SHE* sent an add request to me, saying that she realized that Happy was missing from her Friends list. That knocked me out (one of the guys from Trashcan Sinatras did it too). And she's a very nice person. It's more a time/money issue right now, as pay day is on the 31st, so it's getting to be that tight time of the month. I live a good 90 miles from London and have a previous commitment this way late afternoon/early evening tomorrow, so the time crunch also is a problem. If I'd only learned of the gig sooner -- I just read about it last night, darn it. (And my husband would be envious as he can't go due to work issues. ;) Adam, other folks in London or southern England, what do you know of the Green Note, where Lavelle's playing? The flyer we were handed at the Borderline shows a lot of interesting folks -- singer/songwriter, folkie, Americana, jazz, etc. playing there. It's advertised as having vegetarian food and you get a table if you reserve for food; otherwise, it's standing. Anyone been there? I did see Caroline playing with Loreena McKennitt in April, though. :) Ellen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2007 14:54:52 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Caroline Lavelle, Green Note Cafe Hi, Ellen Rawson wrote: > Adam, other folks in London or southern England, what > do you know of the Green Note, where Lavelle's > playing? (and, neatly tying this thread to the lossless/lossy discussion, i hasten to point out you can get all three of her releases in flac from zunior.com.) jill also used to front a band called bent ivy which supposedly released a record but i've never been able to find it. you can find a mp3 of a song they put on a compilation back in 2001-ish, as well as the live recording of her that first got me hooked, at http://bootlog.wordpress.com/2006/04/09/jill-barber-grad-club-kingston-8-november-2005/ the guy who runs that site is a big fan as well and has also posted several other shows of hers there as well. i sure hope she sometime makes the trek down from halifax to this little corner of the world. or at least new york! woj ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2007 16:58:30 -0400 From: "Richard Messum" Subject: Re: who's on the list? - ----- Original Message ----- From: Ellen Rawson To: ecto@smoe.org Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2007 12:36 PM Subject: Re: who's on the list? >Ellen's still here. >I saw Great Big Sea in London last night -- good fun, London Ontario? Boy is my email address red! Apologies for the list clutter. I've encountered a few of you on lala.com, but since I'm here and posting, a quick intro. I'm Ken, an ectophile for 15 years or so but only a recent list member and Happy listener. Among my personal musical immortals are Emily Bezar, Lori Carson, Suzanne Vega, the late lamented Splashdown, and on and on. My latest ecto-esque obsession has been a little four track Anna Nalick session I stumbled onto over at Rhapsody.com. Ms. Nalick is a bit more pop-oriented than I tend to enjoy, but this live, stripped down set really puts her voice on display. It's quite glorious; I hope that she manages a long progressively ascending career without being chewed up and spat out by the dreaded 'music industry' she's at least nominally a part of.
