I was not talking about "in-your-face" artists. Those are annoying. And usually not talented. I'm talking abut doing simple promo, having a website. I never saw having a nice, easy to navigate official website as "in your face". Then later also wrote: >but I can't imagine that she'll ever be the >kind of ambitious go-getter that Amy respects and thinks is worth her time. Ouch, I feel that was a little harsh. You know I've supported Happy in the past. I have featured her on the site. I'm sorry you feel that way about me. I'm sorry if you or anyone else is mad that I sort of started this MySpace topic, but please know that it's morphed into a completely different topic. I was only writing about the hack and how that could be bad for artists and thought those if us who had music up there might want to take it down. My post wasn't even actually about MySpace, it was about the hack site, I was actually sticking up for MySpace at first. But now that I've learned more about it, I'm getting more leery. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2007 14:00:15 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: MySpace is what you make of it Thanks for your time, Vickie the reasons I posted here about this is that.... I totally respect where Happy comes from as an artist. She is ahead of the curve in so many ways. I know that there are alot of indie artists and those who love them here and, myspace has become a central water cooler for many. What happened to Lelia Broussard and Nashville Bound .... Could happen to any unsigned wonderfully talented indie artist. You could have a song that becomes a hit TV theme or in a TV show and next thing you know, everyone and their little brother is looking for you on myspace and after x amount of profile views and play counts....you go on the charts... You can delete and/or make new profiles, keep zeroing your own profile count, put your player on manual, and so on to slow it down...but...Lelia is doing that now and she's still getting 12,000 - 20,000 plays a day and isn't on the charts and so on. The heartening thing about all of this is that she is fabulously talented - like finding a young little Stevie Wonder or a young Laura Nyro - she is that TALENTED and UNIQUE (she can also mimic all of them and Prince, just for fun!! ) and..besides all that - she's a complete hoot! So....it's waaaay cool that average people recognize all her great quailties and have embraced her - which shows people are STARVED for the real thing....in soul acoustic and pop. The sad thing is that we are all so still saddled with the corporate greed mongers - whether at Murdockville or major and even some indie labels....and they want to manipulate how the artist sounds and looks like...at a certain point, you gotta lean over and give Kelly Clarkson a big thumbs up for sticking up for herself and what songs and how she wants them to sound to....Clive Davis. I think the labels losing power in many many respects has been a really great thing. It's just that on the otherhand, the same old sharks are out there and there are new dangers and those go for indies and those that are signed.... But...you know, there are ways to protect artists and in the future, I do feel it will improve. Meanwhile, hurricane season is on - and this season looks to be a nasty one...... So, to anyone on the list who may be living or planning to tour the next two months in the path of.....hurricane pathfinder, hurricane navigator, hurricane escalade, hurricane...landcruisier.... a big hats off to you and hope everyone can ride this one out safely. New Pornographers. Rilo Kiley. Josh Ritter M.I.A. What was that sound? My head exploding? Yikes. In other news... I'm addicted Catherine Howe's "What a Beautiful Place." It's a long-out-of-print and obscure early 70's British folk-pop album, re-released earlier this year by the Numero project, that sounds to me like the ideal cross between Joni Mitchell and Karen Carpenter -- all of the former's artfulness with all of the latter's melancholy (almost everything is in a minor key... YAY) and lush production. And speaking of that production -- it was produced by an evidently well-known jazz musician, and it's fantastic. A lot of delicate syncopated piano and oboe. I don't think it's possible to make music like this any more, so earnestly innocent/hopeful and brooding/mournful simultaneously. ~tim ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2007 00:20:14 -0400 From: "robert bristow-johnson" Subject: Ectofest 2007 sold out at least virtually sold out. no more advance name reservations. if it doesn't feel overly packed, there's still room to admit walk-ins from the street. just FYI (and for your remembering): 1. if you got a confirmation from me, you're on the list. if you did not, you're not on the list. 100% correlation. confirmation email has logical equivalence to having name on list. 2. no walk-ins will be admitted before 7:30 pm (thus giving all reserved placeholders their reserved place). if there is space after 7:30, we may *choose* to admit walk-ins. reserved-name placeholders that are no-shows *may* lose their reservations to those waiting outside. 3. as we approach 7:30, *maybe* we'll try to call the cell phones of parties not yet showing. that's why i asked for such. two persons flying in from across the pond (can you believe that?? i mean, holy shit!) get special dispensation, since i imagine their cell phones work as good (and as inexpensively) here and my cell would work there. and i ain't calling no foreign number. [damn fereigners. Alberto Gonzales knows how to deal with them. hell, the AG (that's a weird co-incidence) sounds like *he's* a damn fereigner. i think the Attorney General should be sent back south of the Rio Grande with all the rest of them wet-back "fereigners".] 4. this place will be tight. there are *not* sufficient number of chairs (nor space for them, if everyone was sitting). so, for the average attendee, please expect to be standing, at least for a portion of the show. you'll see better standing. but if you're sitting and you wanna get up to move your feet, please be considerate and let someone who's been standing awhile use your seat. 5. no hand stamping. we'll issue re-admit passes to anyone who ducks out to the neighboring pubs to get liquored up (Lily Pad is *not* a pub, no liquor license, no booze in it). you surrender such pass when you are re-admitted. that, along with Depo Provera, is what we call "population control". if you don't wanna come back, you're free to give your re-admit pass to any bum on the street that can take your place. 6. for those of you flying in, for US$1.70, you can get from Logan Airport to within 600 meters of the venue by use of the Silver Line (to South Station) and the Red Line (to Central Square), walk along Prospect Street until you get to Hampshire, and then hang a left for a couple blocks. check out: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Inman+Square&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=33.764224,59.765625&ie=UTF8&ll=42.369167,-71.100211&spn=0.015378,0.029182&z=15&om=1 for the subway, check out: http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/ hit the "Interactive Street Map" tab and zoom in to downtown Boston. 7. for those of you driving, expect some serious parking difficulty for around Inman Square. Boston and Cambridge are, IMO, signficantly worse than NYC/Manhattan, as far as driving and parking are concerned. the residential streets have unfriendly looking "Permit Parking only" signs. maybe you can find some metered spot (you need not pay that late) or a pay parking lot. 8. thank you to all who are coming and making the financial thing feasible. we probably won't break even, but that's what i might expect for 3 acts in such a small place. be sure and buy CDs. support your favorite ecto-artists. bye, - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2007 22:01:57 -0700 From: raven@igc.org Subject: Re: MySpace is what you make of it On 08/18/2007 10:17 AM, Xenu's Sister wrote: > I do, however, use AdAware a few times a week to get rid of the > tracking cookies.
