Quiet, it is a bit new agey and ambient to me and it seems suited to staying in the background, but loud or with good headphones I get immersed in the different worlds of each song as they take on more character. They put in a small number of chairs but the many older people who came missed out and wandered around looking bewildered. Vienna and cello, violin and percussion were very professional and played pretty music, but concentrated on the latest album which isn't my kind of thing, quite AOR, heading into Norah Jones territory methinks. Vienna has certainly grown in stage confidence and she's taking an improvisational comedy course so may continue to improve. No plucking of heartstrings, but enjoyable. Christina Courtin's seemed to be the headliner and her fans were younger, louder and drunker. She was delightful - dancing around like a 12 year old with jerky moves, eyes squeezed shut, a giant smile even during sad songs, microphone often more than a foot from her mouth and still loud. Soap song's refrain goes "I want to be your loofah". Touches of music hall, and a nice natural folky sound. For me there has to be something spectacular or distinct to the voice for this kind of music to move beyond 'fun live', and don't think she's there yet, but definitely recommend her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ytv4ihgpLLk - a good recording shows you how adorable she is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_dQO5KJnzc - crap recording of loofah song. I haven't listened to Stranger Things in a while, but I do enjoy it. It's not quite like _Shooting Rubber Bands..._ but it seems a natural follow-up, far more so than _Ghost of a Dog_ did. I know they've played together over the years, but for a band that hasn't recorded an album in so many years, they sound amazingly well-connected. As for Holly McNarland, I love _Home Is Where My Feet Are_ too. I love her previous stuff as well, and I know some people found Home a bit too tame, but to me it's her best and strongest album, and the one I listen to most. Chin Up Buttercup is still new and hasn't gotten a lot of listens yet. I don't think it's as strong an album as Home, but it's still fun. That's probably a new word in terms of Holly's music. Some of the songs are edgier, a la the songs on _Stuff_ and some are cheerful (in a Holly way, not a bouncy way). I wouldn't say I love it (at least not yet), but I do like it. If you haven't gotten The Komrade Sessions from iTunes yet, you might want to check that out. It's more in the vein of HIWMFA What was in your CD Baby spree? I just recently got 8 albums there myself, but I'll put those in another post.
