Would anyone out there be willing to share an mp3 of this song with me? All my CDs are packed up and in storage, so I don't have access to the single on which this was a b-side and it's not available on i-tunes. Well, not in Australia, anyhow. Might be different elsewhere. I'd be really grateful! This one rocked. Back when we had a thread on slogans for ecto, one of them (offered with regret) was "the other white music." Well, here's one to challenge that perception. The band calls their music "New World Acoustic Rock." They're a duo: Mazz Swift on violin and vocals, and Brad Hammonds on guitar. (Notwithstanding, there were 10 people on stage at the show.) The guitar + violin combination sometimes reminds me of Shai nO Shai. Mazz is a fabulous fiddler (Juilliard-trained), and she has a great voice. And Brad plays a pretty mean acoustic guitar. I first saw Brazz Tree playing at Caffe Vivaldi and enjoyed the show enough to buy their (first) CD, Quest. I've also seen Mazz playing violin in the W4th St. subway station, but have always been too much in a rush to stop and say hi. I figured that this was a band with a small following so there wouldn't be much of a crowd at Joe's Pub. But they almost filled the place--which is great for a Tuesday night. On stage were two backing vocalists (Mazz's sisters), a cello, a viola, an effects guitar, a drummer, a bass, an electric guitar, and Brad and Mazz. They played the CD through from start to finish, using the same arrangements as on the CD. On some of the high-energy songs, while Brad's hands were racing all over the guitar and Mazz was sawing down forests, the lighting guy worked himself into a stroboscopic frenzy using nothing but the normal stage lighting. It really kicked butt. Next appearance: Kripalu, Stockbridge, MA July 14, 8pm. Many more dates at the myspace site and at http://www.houseofwally.com/bt.htm , where there's also video. http://www.brazztree.com/ http://myspace.com/brazztree (A better-quality "Out of Time" track is here: http://www.joespub.com/caltool/index.cfm?fuseaction=detail&performanceID=3178 ) The opener for the show was Anais Mitchell. Quiet acoustic folk, two guitars, a voice with a slightly Dorothy-Scott-like warble. Not so much my speed, but YMMV. She'll be opening for Ani DiFranco over the next few weeks in San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Brooklyn, and St. Louis. http://www.anaismitchell.com/ http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=21533191 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 23:06:52 -0400 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Who puts pep in your step? I recently played some music for a friend who then asked me, "That's great, but what do you listen to when you just feel like having a good time?" I realized that pretty much everything I've got is intense. It can be intense and meditative, or intense and angry, or intense and uplifting, or intense and esoteric, or whatever. But it's generally not very bouncy. Icehouse's "Can't Help Myself," and "Sister" are probably the bounciest things I've got. Talitha Mackenzie's "Hopa!" ranks up there. Maybe Bel Canto's "Freelunch in the Jungle" or "Agassiz." And I recently got introduced to "Mass Romantic" by Neko Case and the New Pornographers, which I'd also put into that category. I'm probably forgetting a few, but I'd say my music library is severely lacking in bounce. So--what do you listen to when you need some acoustic caffeine? Let me be clear about what I'm looking for. It's not just uptempo music; there's lots of that. I'm looking for music that's so irresistibly energetic that you have to stop whatever else you're doing, jump up out of your chair and skip across the room, arms flailing wildly and head bobbing back and forth. Maybe with some air guitar thrown in. Like that. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 23:24:23 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Who puts pep in your step? Maybe with some air guitar thrown in. Like that. some Afro Celt Sound System. some Vdrttind - i think that track 8 (Kyldn kdvijd) on the album Vihma makes for good ecto-acoustic caffeine (especially around 1:17 and 2:21 into the song): kick-ass music that also doesn't suck. also, i've always liked Ashley MacIsaac's version of Sleepy Maggie (album: hi, how are you today?). if you go back to the 70's, some Camel guitar ballads (like Lady Fantasy). - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2007 00:01:23 -0400 From: "Ella McCrystle" Subject: Re: Who puts pep in your step? I was in much the same condition as the song... sweater on backwards, driving home in early morning. Except I was about thirty years older than she says she was in the song... Once a year when driving to the beach for "girls weekend" Jill Sobule's self-titled second CD is a definite -- very bouncy CD for me. Easy, witty and fun. "Karen by Night"? How could ya not bounce to that? It's definitely an album (sorry...CD) for one good trip per year. Precisely because it's just fun for fun's sake, with witty lyrics and cute music. It's as "bubble-gum" as I've ever bought. And in this case, I use "bubble gum" in a flattering way. And though not music, the performance poetry of Alix Olson: www.alixolson.com, or any of the readings by David Sedaris always put a smile on me mug. (Lots of clips of both on You Tube). btw...
