It was only an hour slot, featured at least three tunes from her new album, and otherwise contained no surprises. It felt like not so much a gig, rather a gathering of friends. Lovely. As for the support acts: well, I have to say, I almost didn't make it to the gig, feeling out of sorts and generally tired and grumpy, and as the first act, Catherine Tran -- an attractive Asian girl wearing a hideous yellow dress and accompanied by two fashionably wiry young men -- took to the stage, my expectations weren't high. Which just goes to show you. As the guys took up electric guitar and percussion duties and Catherine sang and played acoustic guitar, they created something breathtakingly beautiful out of something so simple. It was like being haunted by a particularly seductive ghost. I'd definitely recommend her and although she hasn't got anything out, she has a myspace page (www.myspace.com/catherinetran)with some sound samples on, and I'll be watching her career with interest. next up was Paul Steel. I expected another in the long line of sensitive singer/songwriter, Nick Drake/Elliot Smith wannabes, but I was amazed when in fact six people took to the tiny stage, none of them looking any older than about 16, including two female back-up singers and lead singer (presumably the Paul Steel, but I could be wrong) who stood centre stage with keyboards and a sampler in front of him. What followed was utterly amazing and uplifting, a weird mixture of the Commitments, the Pipettes, Jellyfish and the Beach Boys, a sonic assault with a sort of 60s pop sensibility and a 00s electro-guitar danceability, with beautiful harmonised vocals and moments of sheer madness, as the stage erupted in percussion, guitars and leaping, writhing bodies. Oh, and kazoos. You just don't get enough kazoos in music today, I think. Stonking good fun and highly recommended, it's another band I'll be keeping an ear out for in the future. Again, they have a myspace page with sound samples. I haven't heard these yet, but I do wonder if they capture the sheer energy of their live show. My only regret was not being able to stick around afterwards, but it was late, I'd been up early and was due to get up early again. Also, now living in West London, it's a long haul through the canyons of Hammersmith to the litter- strewn wastelands of Acton, and I didn't get to bed until about midnight. I'm not as young as I used to be, you know. I wasn't, even then. adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2007 05:35:32 -0700 (PDT) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: taken by trees hi.. to de-lurk..victoria bergsman left the concretes and is now found in taken by trees..takenbytrees.com.
