Not new for you lot - covers stuff like 'the death of scarcity', 'the long tail' and 'forget product - sell relationship'. http://newmusicstrategies.com/ebook More fun is 'An IFPI & BPI Board Member Writes' - blimey, these people go about things the wrong way. http://newmusicstrategies.com/2007/06/14/an-ifpi-bpi-board-member-writes/ K. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 19:37:26 -0400 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: mini concert reviews Cos I'm capable of being concise. Really. Martha Wainwright, River to River Festival Boats and setting sun and Hudson River reflected in skyscraper windows. Martha a bit unhinged (just back from Glastonbury). Unnerving to watch, she'd escape from her songs with moans and grimaces and flourishes, and I crossed my fingers that she wouldn't stray too far into the wild and discomfort the staid crowd. "They keep on reminding me it's a family show, so I can't sing BMFA." And then she goes "fuck!" as her guitar makes a weird sound. The Guardian proclaimed her the most talented of her family, but that's silly when she's only released one album. Chris Thile from Nickel Creek, River to River Festival "Jimmy Hendrix of the Mandolin" said the announcer. Chris's finger action would have impressed a speed metaller; a super fast Bach was particularly fun, enhanced by his comic facial expressions. His own songs were cute and he played up the cute. After saying "parenthetically" he told the NY crowd "you've got to realize, when a musician sounds pretentious, they're just really scared, you people are intimidating." There were five perfect blonds in front of me; no inter-species mingling. Garrison Starr, Living Room Fun loud Southern rock, and less loud stuff. Garrison told cute stories about her broke down van, Christian schooling and crush on a radio personality. Likable, so bought her live 'Fan's greatest hits' - reckon I buy at gigs when I think a musician is nice (and needs money). Garrison had nicknamed the (bearded, serene) drummer Jesus, which lent itself to inappropriate banter such as "I've been playing with myself lots lately so it's weird to be playing with Jesus again." Yeah, you say that at all the gigs. Lucy Kaplansky, Madison Square Park The best part was when the sprinklers came on at 8.20 and spun in circles and drenched the picnickers. The music (folk and country) was fine - good covers (Julie Miller x2, Johnny Cash x2, Paul McCartney, Loudon Wainwright) and remarkably predictable originals. The mosh pit was great - kindergarteners, who drove security wild as they climbed on speakers and tried to stuff grass into the equipment. Lucy's Chinese daughter snuck on stage for a goodnight kiss, and there were several touching songs about her adoption. k. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #167 ***************************
