What's wrong with my back? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2007 19:20:07 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: recent live albums Sarah Slean - Orphan Music I'm not a big Sarah Slean fan. I've had her Universe ep for years, and I like it, but don't play it often. Then one day I found myself at her website, and I started listening to her new album, Orphan Music. I absolutely LOVE this album. A lot of the songs have a kind of cabaret style that people have debated on ecto before. For me, it really works. Listening to Universe, I'm strongly reminded of Tori Amos. But listening to Orphan Music, I don't think of anyone else. You can listen to most of the album (11 of 15 tracks) on the website. There are 9 live tracks, plus 2 b-sides and 4 "remixes" which aren't really remixes so much as string quartet arrangements. I love the redone version of "Weight." Highly, highly recommended. Sia - Lady Croissant Another case in which I like the live album a lot more than the studio album. Lady Croissant has songs from Sia's debut (including a killer version of "Breathe Me") as well as some Zero 7 songs. There's also a new studio song. I find this much more compelling than Colour the Small One (though that album has grown on me). Ane Brun - Live in Scandinavia Just beautiful, and a must-have for fans. The orchestral backing really suits her songs. The best tracks, like "This Voice" with pizzicato strings, seem even more introspective than their studio versions. Includes a wonderful (and almost unrecognizable) cover of PJ Harvey's "The Dancer" Annika Bentley - Live I've been curious about Annika Bentley for some time, but this is the first album of hers I've heard. The songs are kind of unusual, so it's not the sort of thing that's immediately catchy. But I like it more with each listen. A new Dresden Dolls live DVD is due out on July 10. Yay! Her stuff is definitely avant-garde.. she loves big words and weird arrangements - but I love how unique she is. She's definitely an acquired taste, so the fact that you're not immediately put off is a good sign. :) I saw her in concert once, and got to meet her after the show. She's so sweet and down-to-earth. I only recently discovered she had released this live cd, and I haven't heard it yet.. Did you order it from her website?
