I must add to the list though Lucinda Williams, Tori Amos (particularly my all time favorite "Winter"), Paul McCartney, Gillian Welch, Don McLean, Shawn Colvin, and definitely Patty Griffin (whose "Kite Song" is one of the most beautiful compositions pen ever put to paper). - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Doug Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2007 4:33 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: True songwriting accomplishments What songs move you with their extremely well-constructed tune, composition, and lyrics? The tune and composition and vocals are all great too, > and put together they all slay me every single time. Hmm ... I "get" (not necessarily _hear_) melody first, then composition, harmony next, lyrics last; but a song isn't ensconced in this list until I _truly_ absorb its lyrics. Honestly, part of the reason I absorb (not just hear) lyrics last is that lyrics can utterly soil an otherwise favorite piece. A song's music *is* to me its most immediate part; and by the time I really delve into the lyrics, I might well already enjoy the song only to be repulsed by it at the last moment because of its lyrics -- perhaps (I suspect: and am grateful I can *only* suspect) on the order of discovering someone's ghastly breath during a really good kiss. ta, me ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2007 09:04:23 -0700 From: "Bill Mazur" Subject: RE: Ectofest 2007 It looks great Fog! - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of F.J.Fornorn Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2007 11:26 PM To: Ecto Subject: Re: Ectofest 2007 Ectofest.com appears to be functional. You might not realise it....but, yes, you are a member now. Don't worry... it's nothing you can't get out of....a very low level committment. I (Kristeen) am going to be singing with Morrissey on the David Letterman show this Monday, June 25. I do some "background" wailing on the new Morrissey single, "That's How People Grow-Up".....and that's just the song, coincidentally, we'll be demonstrating on the Letterman show. Immediately after that, the second leg of the Morrissey tour begins....and it's been well-waxed, spray-tanned, and de-spider veined for your consumption. Please go to www.privatethingsyouveconcealed.com for show dates. I don't trust my own website to be updated....mostly because it's up to me....and I know how undependable I am. Hope to see you some symbolically sunny day, Kristeen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2007 15:21:34 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Smacking myself upside the head (was Re: True songwriting accomplishments) Hi, Reading through the additions to this thread today, I am smacking myself soundly upside the head for omitting my two all-time favorite compositions by anyone, ever: Veda Hille, "26 Years" Veda Hille, "Boat Ride To Skidegate" (and by extension its lyrical cousin, "Meeting The Group of 7") Both (all three? :) of these are, in a word, perfect. And I'm pretty sure that 20, 30, 40 years from now I will still be able to say that nothing has been able to top them.
