I hope this kind of post is ok here. I was pointed this way from someone on Livejournal who responded to a post I made. I was told that Wendy Rule's music gets discussed here. Wendy will be in the SF Bay area in early July and is looking to play a house concert, preferably on Tuesday July 3rd. I am a big fan of hers, not a concert promoter. Since I just moved to the Bay area a few months ago, I'm not that well connected for the music scene but am doing the best I can. If you have any suggestions of where she could play (or if you have a house to offer) please let me know. My apartment in Alameda is a bit small to host 12-40 people. Thanks in advance. - -Denise Cicuto ___________________________________________________________________________ "To take photographs means to recognize-simultaneously and within a fraction of a second-both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. Damn this needing a job to make money crap!!! :P :P :P :P :P Missing not only Happy, but Noe too is going to KILL me. But y'all better sell that place out, you understand?! For Robert and anyone else who might be helping, here are some ideas to help do that: * LOCAL RADIO AIRPLAY. The colleges will just be starting up in Sept. 8, but the stations still operate over the summertime so now is the time to make friends with your local college station Music Director and make sure they have some of Happy's and Noe's music in their library. Also, maybe a local station would be willing to be a media sponsor and run some PSAs about the show in exchange for hanging a banner by the stage or something like that. (If any proceeds from the show can be earmarked for charity, this will help that happen as well.) * LOCAL PRESS COVERAGE. Happy is a fascinating story. (Noe is her own fascinating story too, for that matter.) The whole ecto mailing list is a fascinating story too, and yet over these 16 years nobody has noticed enough to want to write about it. A press release announcing the show needs to go out now. Also, listings need to be placed in all the local papers (especially the Boston Phoenix) at least a month in advance. * ONLINE MARKETING. MySpace, MySpace, MySpace. Set up an "ectofest 2007" MySpace and add as friends everyone in the Northeast who has listed ectophilic music as an interest anywhere. Use this to post bulletins soliciting help, as well. Make up banners and post them in the comments of relevant MySpace pages far and wide. * STREET TEAMING. This involves wallpapering the Boston metro area with flyers, starting at least a month in advance of the show. Every CD shop and coffeehouse in town should have a poster in the window. If any ecto artists are playing in town in the days leading up to Sept. 8, go to the show and hand out flyers to the attendees. Robert can't do all this alone. Some of this can be done by folks who don't live in the area but who are planning to come to the show, or can't come to the show and yet would like to help make it happen. This has to be a production of ecto's collective heart, as it were ... time to step forward and help make it a great night!! - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2007 13:44:11 -0400 From: laura@reelingreviews.com Subject: RE: Ectofest 2007 Quoting Michael Colford : > Wow. Ewww, both of those options make me want to barf. It so smacks of spam, something that neither Happy or Noe should be involved in. Intellectually I know that stuff like that can be effective if done right, but it can turn people off if done wrong. One problem is that both options have been overused by shitty or mediocre bands/artists so people like me don't trust them anymore. When I go to a MySpace page and it's lousy with marketing bullshit I usually turn away and go elsewhere. It's a very very irrational mindset that if you have to oversell yourself, you probably aren't worth a damn. True genius should be discovered, naturally touted by fans and take on a life of its own. OF COURSE I realize how totally stupid that mindset is (if it happened like that then Happy would be famous now), and I know that good bands/artists have made an impact by having in-your-face marketing. I said it was irrational. In any case, I'm willing to make an ectofest MySpace page and send out a Bulletin via Happy's page. I have to get back in the habit of sending out add requests, something I rarely do anymore. I used to send out several dozen every week, but no more. I send out maybe one or two a week now. I get (rather, Happy's page gets) tons of add requests so the list is still constantly growing. I recently approved 5 pages worth of add requests sent to Happy's page (I had let them build up for a couple of weeks). I can do it, Robert, if you want. Until very recently I had "I'd Love To Change The World" as the feature song on my MySpace page...I flat out love that song. Use to play it often on WCVM in Morrisville NY when I was in college there. The 10YA page to hear it is at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=164403427 As for a song for me in this topic: >What songs move you with their extremely well-constructed tune, >composition, and lyrics? To me the key words are "move you"... The two most recent ones for me that complete the trifecta for me (tune, composition, lyrics) are the album version of Jewel's "Foolish Games" and Loreena McKennitt's "Dante's Prayer". Both flat out slay me every single time...I can't even listen to Dante's Prayer without some tears developing. Another more recent one is Beth Hart's "L.A. Song". Others through the years for me that are the compete package include (all of them OLDIES being I'm a semi-old fart): Cat Steven's "Father & Son" Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" Simon & Garfunkel's "Only Living Boy In New York" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" Dan Fogelberg's "Leader Of The Band" (a tribute to his father, the late conductor of the USC Marching Band) Harry Chapin's "Taxi" (Harry was my all-time favorite live performer...saw him like 15 times) It's A Beautiful Day's "White Bird" (lyrics are rather simple, but the album cut was a cult classic masterpiece) Badfinger's "Day After Day" I could toss in about six other Cat Steven's songs too. You post a flyer in a reasonable location, and passers-by either choose to look at it or they don't. > Intellectually I know that stuff like that can be effective if > done right, but it can turn people off if done wrong. That's true. But if you do it right, it can be very effective. In today's world, if you don't get the word out about something (particularly something music-related) online, people just aren't gonna hear about it. I'm not talking about spamming people or using the flamethrower approach ... I'm talking about getting the word out to people who have a very good chance of being interested once they get the information. Hence the suggestion to add people who already have ectophilic bands listed in their MySpace interests and live in the Boston area. I have seen this tactic work successfully in several contexts. > It's a very very irrational mindset that if you have to oversell yourself, you probably aren't > worth a damn. Believe me, I wish that really were the way the world worked ... if it were, I would be traveling North America on a tour bus instead of driving the van myself. :} > In any case, I'm willing to make an ectofest MySpace page and send out a Bulletin via Happy's > page. If you would like some help maintaining it once you get it set up, I'll be happy to help ... I don't have the time right now to create a new page from scratch, but I maintain a few music-related MySpace pages for people on a daily basis so it wouldn't be a big deal to add one more. Drop me a note off-list with the username and password if you'd like a hand with that. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2007 22:00:04 -0400 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: True songwriting accomplishments On 6/19/07, Doug wrote: > What songs move you with their extremely well-constructed tune, > composition, and lyrics? What comes immediately to mind: Susan Werner, "Like Bonsai" Richard Shindell, "Fishing" Kate Bush, "Love And Anger" Noe Venable, "Midsummer Night's Dream" Rachael Sage, "Jane's Dimitri" I usually notice lyrics before all else, and most of these songs have at least one line that ties it all together and is a proverbial punch in the gut. The tune and composition and vocals are all great too, and put together they all slay me every single time. There are more, but these are what percolate to the top of my brain at the moment... - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #159 ***************************
