The major theme here is revenge, swiftly followed by self-doubt, all shot through with her trademark dark humor. The first track has our heroine pushing a man out of the window, while sashaying! It is followed by No Man Alive, which describes a shrew archetype. Temptresses, and nascent Ophelias in throes of madness populate these songs, dispensing carnival justice to errant lovers and ponder romantic existentialism. (The vagina dentate pun of the title is fully intended). The self-produced cd weaves carnival themes, sound effects, elaborately orchestrated keyboards, and layers of Furys voice(s) into a seamless, claustrophobic whole. She croons with a delicate mezzo-soprano, screams wordlessly, whispers sotto voce, turning her libretto into a sonic tapestry thats densely layered and impossible to separate from the musical aspects. The elegant lyric sheet, filled with twisted bon mots, is much needed Furys music veers from rococo Kate Bush pieces (Carousel) to the weird avant pop of Coco Rosie (Carnival Justice, the Gloves are Off is mostly spoken word) to gentle ballads (You Had Me). Fury dares you to go through the gash, and come out unharmed. http://ethereal-lad.livejournal.com/365905.html Blog: http://ethereal-lad.livejournal.com Music Blog: http://www.last.fm/user/ethereal_lad/ _____________________________________________________________________________ _______ Finding fabulous fares is fun. This is for an all-female-artist radio format slated for national distribution to commercial radio stations and some other new media platforms. As such, it is designed to have mainstream appeal, but at the same time the playlist includes some nice depth and quite a few ecto favorites. The station has been in development since 2006 and has been running in a "beta" stage for some time now. Right now if you tune in you'll just hear an automated playlist with some station IDs, but we're about to start ramping it up for an official web launch later this summer. There is a major broadcaster supporting this format that is serious about getting it heard, but it needs to sound great so I'm looking for people who really understand the concept and its potential. First of all, I need a producer-correspondent to help put together some real entertainment value by creating weekly pieces focusing on the music and the artists. This might include tidbits of music news, background info on the artists and songs, lifestyle items that fit the format and/or possibly even fun theater-or-the-mind or entertainment bits. You would help conceptualize, write, voice and/or produce these on an ongoing basis, you would be given access to a large artist interview library and other resources, and you would also likely have quite a bit of input into the direction of the station. I'm also looking for a weekend indie/eclectic/new music show that runs an hour or more. If you are interested in that one it would need to be pre-recorded by you, hosted with interesting commentary and insight into the music, and submitted weekly, ready for broadcast. Finally, I may need a voiceover announcer to do updated station IDs. I think a female with an Aussie accent would sound terrific for this...but that's not a requirement. This is part-time freelance work that you would do at your current location and send in via web or CD. Naturally it would be helpful if you have some radio experience and, of course, facilities to produce the materials or at least record the voiceovers. There is compensation to be discussed and we're an equal opportunity employer. Reply to me privately if you would like to be considered or would like to recommend someone for one of these roles. Comments or suggestions on the project from all are welcome too. :) To avoid search bots I'm not going to mention the name or URL of the station right now, but here's a direct link to the live stream... mms://a296.l2241459503.c22414.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/296/22414/v0001/reflector:59503 Thanks for reading! The loudest of the four acts I saw last night (ha! four! take that, Karen-of-a-few-months-ago-in-concert-wasteland) was The Veils and they were great - charismatic front-man (remarkably skinny pretty guy, stylish in hat and suit, jerking and spasming all over the stage, and good loud romantic music). Too loud, however, so had to stuff tissue in my ears, which muffles. (And sometimes stays in the ear, as a friend's doctor found). Time to get proper earplugs. Though am not ready for v. expensive personally fitted ones. Advice appreciated. Will scrutinize the ears of fellow attendees from now on, so apologies if you stand next to me. I have been using the classic E-A-R foam earplugs for years now -- they are available at any drugstore. Some people find that they block too much of the high end, but in my experience, you can usually manipulate the placement of the earplugs to get a decent sound. I'm quite convinced that wearing earplugs at the hundreds of shows I've attended during the past couple decades has saved me from hearing problems. - --Sue T. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2007 13:40:06 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: What kind of earplugs do you know and love? go here for the best ones http://www.etymotic.com/ also, their headphones are the bomb. small note - they can tickle your ears at first. In my very early years I never wore ear plugs, and a few shows were so loud that I'd have hearing problems for about 12 hours, but this was not often... worst show was the WHO about 20 years ago, I was literally in pain after 30 min and the show was nearly 3 hours, so I had severe hearing problems for days, in fact to this day I have faint ringing in my ears all the time, 24/7, but I'm used to it and usually don't notice this unless I'm talking about it. But it was obvious I needed to protect my ears, I've tried several types of ear plugs, the most commonly found are the foam E-A-R plugs, they are available at many places, in fact all the big San Francisco clubs have these at the bar, they cost about $1... and as suggested, you can manipulate their fitting to get more or less of the higher frequencies. But I prefer Howard Leight Max UF Foam Plugs (NRR 33), you can buy them on-line at several places, one is http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/holemaxuffop.html I find these are more comfortable than E-A-R, and I usually buy them in quantity (they are disposable). Some people like the SilentEar (NRR 32), see at http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/silnatrubear.html Some people really like Perfect Fit Molded Ear Plugs, these can be perfectly molded to your ear canal, and I know a lot of swimmers that use this ear plug, see http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/jbcuearpl.html but I don't often see them at shows. Some people don't like to use disposable ear plugs, they want something they can use over and over, like http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/holesmreearp.html And there are many other types, check http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/ and several other on-line sources. - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2007 21:34:09 -0700 From: raven@igc.org Subject: Re[2]: What kind of earplugs do you know and love? I should have added that I was referring only to the cheap disposable ear plugs from E-A-R, I really see these most often at every show, but E-A-R also has a "Reusable Foam" that I've never seen up close, you may prefer these, see http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/purefoearpln.html These are quite cheap for "reusable" ear plugs, about $2, I don't know how easily they can be cleaned, since they are "foam" plugs, but the manufacturer insists it's easy. This website offers ear plugs for many purposes, they even have some that are designed specifically for music, I have not much experience with most of these models, see http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/nasopl.html You may want to experiment with their trial packs and use the model you like best, they have both reusable and disposable trial packs, see http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/reustrialpac.html and http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/unfoamtrialp.html - -- John ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #148 ***************************
