Teeny tiny minor nitpick of the Subject line... Having been born there, along with Melissa Etherige, who I didn't know, never met or even heard of until years later, I can with some authority say that it's spelled "Leavenworth" :) There actually is a city there, alongside the somewhat famous Fort Leavenworth military base. There are lots of prisons in the area. There's the famous one referred to in old gangster movies that Mike invoked. It's a pretty hardcore federal prison. Useless Trivia: The "Birdman of Alcatraz" did ALL of his birding stuffies while he was in Leavenworth. They made him give up his birds when he was transferred to Alcatraz, but I guess when it came time to write the book, "Birdman of Leavenworth" didn't rhyme and so just didn't have the same pizzaz. The prison is interesting-looking from the outside. It's got a dome in the middle and when my brother was little he wandered away from home and walked and walked and walked. He came to the prison and freaked out. He seriously thought he'd walked all the way to Washington D.C and was looking at the Capitol building! Helpful passersby set him straight on where he was and got him safely home. Then Fort Leavenworth has its own prison, the "United States Disciplinary Barracks" which I believe is pretty hardcore. I know they used to have executions there. Just south of Leavenworth is a pissant town called Lansing (which I can call pissant because I lived and went to school there after the age of 7), and a block away from the junior high school I went to was the Kansas State Penitentiary for Men which is most famous for being the place that held, let go then executed the "In Cold Blood" killers. Not far from there, though out in the country as opposed to being right in the town, is what used to be the Kansas State Penitentiary for Women which isn't famous for anything that I know of, but it's a weird place, since a public road runs right through the middle of the complex. From what I read, maximum security women are now sent to Topeka, and this one is now known as the "Lansing Correctional Facility" which is a co-ed minimum security prison. Last, and this opened after I escaped...er, left the area, the CCA (Corrections Corporation of America)" which serves the Federal Marshall's office and is mainly a way station for federal prisoners "awaiting trial, sentencing or assignment to a federal prison." When I was 7 we moved to a farm just south of Lansing. Our land was smack in the middle of the area where a Lansing prisoner had to go if he was headed south (to go north would take you right through Lansing and Leavenwoth, to go west would take you the boondocks, where you wouldn't find a major city until you reached San Francisco, and to go east would take you to the banks of the Missouri River, so unless you could swim really well, south was the only way to go). There were a fair share of escaped prisoners caught on or near our land (one time, three were hiding in our barn) but we never had a car or anything stolen, and never came into direct contact with any. If someone escapes from a prison, the first thing they want to do is get the hell away from the area, so few people ever worried about being around so many prisons. Nice to see a classic Vickie post again! I had absolutely no interest in any of this, read the whole thing and was weirdly fascinated by it all (and it even ends with a good joke). Reports have surfaced that iTunes Plus files are secretly tagged with personally identifying information including names, E-mail addresses and other sensitive data. This may not end well for Apple., we'll just see if it ends up blowing up on them like it did for Sony. Meanwhile it looks like another nail in the coffin for the music industry's reputation. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article1871173.ece http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070530-apple-hides-account-info-in-drm-free-music-too.html Dan ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #144 ***************************
