So I'm in the car listening to npr's Talk of the Nation - Science Friday. They bring on a guest named Mike McCready, CEO of a company called Platinum Blue. What they have done is to analyze hit records, lumping them into 60 different clusters that share certain musical qualities- algorithms. They claim an 80-85% success rate at predicting hit records. It's Pandora for record company executives. They indicate that companies would still use A&R people to listen for potential hits and marketing to determine the marketability of an artist. They would supplement, not replace, them. With their alleged success rate I don't know why. I thought new genres would be a problem but they claim this applies to all genres dating back to classical music (classical hits?). One listener asked about hits that break the rules, using Dave Brubeck's Take Five as an example and McCready admitted to not a lot of jazz being analyzed. Unfortunately there's not a lot of jazz hits in recent tears. We all know tons of great songs, ecto and otherwise that could have, should have, would have been hits if they only had a chance. Somehow I have a feeling that a lot of our favorite artists would get rejected for marketability, God knows why. np: the Jazz Butcher- "Cult of the Basement" (speaking of artists who have written lots of hits that never were.) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #136 ***************************
