This Sat night for SF ectos. thank you robert bristow-johnson for mentioning the upcoming show this Saturday night the 19th at Starry Plough in Berkeley! This is ecto singer Cyoakha Grace and that concert you mentioned is the CD release party for my Afro-Celtic all girl gypsy groove band, DRUID SISTERS TEA PARTY!! While the DRUIDS are up and very dancable, (not real ectoish, but fun!), they do perform several of LAND OF THE BLIND's more mellow ballads, so that I can really sing! The Sisters feature the best female drummer in the west CLAUDIA PAIGE, who was asked to join EDA's band at one time, (that's how we made all met up). I recently sang backup for EDA at her CD release concert at Freight and Salvage, so things get even more interwoven and interesting. EDA has a beautiful voice, smokey and sexy and dreamy, (reminds me of my other girlfriend, PIPA PINON) and it was lovely to sing together, Eda and I. DRUID SISTERS also feature an amazing Celtic fiddle player, & the cellist from Cirque du Solie, plus sitting in, since it's a Master Didjeridu evening, what with STEPHEN KENT (Transmission), is BLIND's didjeridu player, KRYSTOV, sitting in with the DRUIDS!! It promises to be an amazing evening, truly! Stephen opens at 9pm, then joins Eda's band, then the Druids play two sets from their new live album, GYPSY LOVE CARAVAN... STARRY PLOUGH SAT. For those who don't know there is a site that will let you listen to Pandora and scrobble your Pandora plays to your last.fm profile. the url for this "PandoraFM" site is: http://pandorafm.real-ity.com/ I use it often and highly recommend it as it really combines the best features of both sites. I'm self-referential enough to love seeing it make charts of my listening patterns, but I don't use it for a whole lot else.... I'd rather listen on Pandora, b/c I love that it's reccs are based on musical properties and characteristics instead of "people who listened to _____ also listened to _________." But I rarely do so, b/c I need to obsessive-compulsively research everything I hear, and generally don't have time for that. I thought the same of Beekeeper as you did...boring, way too slow, not my style. I didn't buy SLG and I refrained from BK as well..the only Tori CDs I haven't purchased. On ADP, however, I noted one or two interesting songs on first listen, and got hooked completely during the second and third listens. Almost Rosey, Secret Spell, and a few others took three or four listens for me to catch on, but once they did they soon became my favorites. Of course, all the songs are my favorites, save for the short ones (Yo George, Fat Slut, etc.) I just ordered the dual disc edition from Amazon today, so I'm looking forward to the DVD and all the rest of the package. - --Doug - ----------- Will we burn in heaven like we do down here? It's vital, creative and fantastic. The only thing you should be aware of as a longtime fans is the album's heavily performative nature. Performed through five different characters all understood to be aspects of Tori's personality, it's a real exploration of notions of artifice, authenticity, femininity, marketing, fractured selves, etc... it has a very glam rock, cabaret feel at points... the critic at Pop Matters called Tori's ultimate drag queen version of herself and compared the sound to Hedwig and the Angry Itch, which isn't entirely off the mark. Some of my friends have felt alienated by the absence of the bare naked confessionals with which they've grown accustomed (which if we're honest, are their own form of artifice). But it's a super rich sonic text with tons to explore. The high concept aspect may not seem to hold together at first, but if you're willing to put in some effort, all five women will become more real to you... it's a concept that you have to come to... it won't come to you. Reading the dolls' blogs really fleshes it out. Start by approaching them more as dolls than as people, and you'll start to get the awesomeness. The five women are more like costumes we wear to perform particular emotions/stories/opinions, etc. than they are actual persons with distinct voices or languages. In no time, you'll perfect your own "Pip" strut while you lip sync to "Teenage Hustling." If you're willing to submit, it's a kind of experiential social commentary. I'm kind of obssessed.
