JoAnn wondered: >> Has anyone heard anything about the new Bjork, Volta, which is >> coming out a week later? I've received the new CD and like what I've heard so far, but I *hate* the packaging. It's sort of a plastic tray wrapped in cardboard, that's folded around the tray and held shut with a *sticker*. - --Ken ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 May 2007 10:40:52 -0500 From: "Jon Wesley Huff" Subject: Re: Bjork (was Tori Amos - American Doll Posse.) The packaging is truly awful. The sticker is just asking to be ripped and/or get dirty and no longer stick. I can't imagine why they would do that. That being said, I really like the album. As a graphic designer, I find it sort of annoying that a designer would sacrifice so much usability for a design that, quite frankly, isn't that great. The same thing happened with the recent Copeland album, which didn't even have a sticker to keep it closed. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 May 2007 12:16:12 -0500 From: Doug Subject: Feist After having listened to The Reminder about 4 times, I've concluded the following 3 songs kick butt, while the rest? I guess I need to go find her earlier CDs now... "1-2-3-4" is the current single, judging by the fact that a.) she made a video and b.) she did it on Leno the other night. I think "My Moon My Man" is the next single, or at the very least the next "emphasis track" b/c it's listed next on the sticker on the album (which I was horrified to see on the counter at Starbucks, oy). - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 May 2007 14:46:18 -0400 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: Lisa Gerrard at NY Society for Ethical something Ah, NY Soc for Ethical Culture - "We believe acting morally does not require belief in a god. We place our faith in the demonstrated capacity of people to do wonderful things. We believe in the worth and dignity of all living beings" says their site. I stand by the first and third sentiments, but don't have the faith of the middle one :) The concert hall was like a church minus religious emblems, with us in pews and Lisa as the altar. A good setting for her music, though there was the standard seeing-over-people's-heads problem that always occurs with pews and a flat floor, and the balcony had a too-slight gradient. Lisa probably wore the same gowns Craig described. I imagined her in sexless priestly garb, so dolled up like a society page lady was jarring, though fun to watch. She had a mini-podium and would stand sideways like an archer and arrange her hands before each song. During the songs her hands would follow vocal lines. It was too jerky and constrained to be graceful, like someone practicing tai chi but not wanting to disturb anyone with their movements. Fascinating to watch. I love 'The mirror pool' but for me her more recent work is too abstract, new agey, ambient, that kind of thing - it falls into the background for me. She's moved away from 'songs' into soundscapes, which are probably even better for exploring her voice and the possibilities of worship through sound. 'The silver tree' songs mainly worked wonderfully live, so don't stay away just because you're not into that album. (You can download it from emusic!) The audience can sink and soar with her voice (that voice!). The concert was mainly slow and regal, with a few funkier numbers interspersed. Thanks for the Portishead/early Goldfrapp comparison for the English pieces Craig - - that captures it. It was amusing how her assistant/singer guy read out Lisa's thank yous, as though she couldn't speak, and then she thanked him and another person for a few minutes, demonstrating that she could indeed speak. The crowd were mad about her and clapped far too long between each piece, and greeted the older songs with applause. The guy who inspired Maharaja was there, some dudes in robes jumped up and down gleefully, flowers were given, a child was embraced. "1-2-3-4" is the first U.S. single, while "My Moon My Man" was the lead single in Canada. There are videos out for both on YouTube.
