Hello. I'm about 9-12 months behind reading my ecto digest, but I just wanted to delurk to say thanks for the link to IT'S A TRAP. Lately I've been totally obsessed with Scandinavian artists - I'm not sure why. I can probably trace it back to my discovery of ROYKSOPP and KINGS OF CONVENIENCE when they released their first albums way back when.... Either way I'm pleased to find a source to actually purchase the music, as opposed to just downloading it illegally on the 'net. Anyway current Scandinavian artists that I am obsessing about include: PLEASURE: super fun 80's new wave electropop with a touch of atmospheric sounds ala AIR. The brainchild behind the band is a Norwegian guy named FRED BALL. He's produced a bunch of breakthrough artists such as LILY ALLEN, CERYS MATTHEW (CATATONIA), BRETT ANDERSON (SUEDE, THE TEARS) and KT TUNSTALL, as well as worked with JUSTINE FRISCHMANN (ELASTICA) and HEIDREN BJORNSDOTTIR (GUS GUS). Oh and BERTINE ZETLITZ's last two albums. Which leads me into.... BERTINE ZETLITZ: love her. Her first album was the only one released here in the US (under the name BERTINE) - and promptly was found in the cut out bin (ooooh. Do they still have cut out bins? It's been so long since I've been to a brick and mortar store) but her subsequent albums have been great. Her latest MY ITALIAN GREYHOUND isn't quite as catchy as her previous work, but it grows on you. I've heard her called the Norwegian ANNIE, except, she's also from NORWAY. MY ITALIAN GREYHOUND has this late 70's early 80's feel to it. I can see several of the songs as theme songs or incidental music to late night sitcom/drama ala LOVE - AMERICAN STYLE. I mean that in a good way. I'M FROM BARCELONA: deceptively title band, as they are actually from SWEDEN. Think the HIDDEN CAMERAS meets BELLE AND SEBASTIAN. Catchy pop, with lots of hand claps and songs about oversleeping and making mix tapes. MAIA HIRASAWA: They call her the Swedish Regina Spektor. I guess that's fairly apt. A little more organic sounding though. Her single AND I FOUND A BOY is darn retro catchy. LONEY, DEAR: Excellent mellow indie rock. I can not stress enough how much I love his latest LONEY NOIR. JENS LEKMAN/JOSE GONZALEZ: strangely I keep on mixing the two up, even though they are pretty different. Fans of SUFJAN STEVENS should check them both out though. JOSE GONZALEZ is much more stripped down. He does a damn great cover of JOY DIVISION's LOVE WITH TEAR US APART as well as Given a little more time I think I might also fall in love with: TOBIAS FROBERG MARIT BERGMAN ANNA TERNHEIM VAPNET KRISTOFFER RAGNSTAM SOPHIE ZELMANI But I have to give them a little more of a listen. Speaking of SOPHIE ZELMANI, I've been listening to FAYE WONG's latest studio album TO LOVE (it was released back in 2003, but I'm just getting around to it now) and apparently she covers one of SOPHIE ZELMANI's songs. Scouring the older ECTO DIGESTS I was ever so pleased that both FAYE WONG was mentioned about a month ago, and that my name was associated with her (hi PAUL!). ECTOPHILES may be familiar with SOPHIE ZELMANI's song I'LL REMEMBER YOU as it was featured in a Buffy episode. From that segue, I would like to say that I ONCE AGAIN and totally pissed off at FOX NETWORK. They pulled the plug on the new Tim Minear project DRIVE. *sigh* A chance to see Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker, and Kate Finnegan on TV again. Two weeks, and they pull the plug. Why do they torture me that way? I usually don't get sucked into a show that fast - meaning I usually wait it out a couple of episodes (say six) to make sure that they don't pull the plug too fast (I was burned by WONDERFALLS - though you'd think I would have learned my lesson with FIREFLY). But for whatever reason, I watched DRIVE from the get go. DAMN YOU FOX. Um. No segue possible here, but I've had the Bjork, Tori, and Feist album for a while now (thanks to internet leaks), and since enough people seem to be writing about them, I won't add to the buzz. But I will mention a few other bands that I have been listening (when not listening to the above Scandinavian artists) that I think are ecto-worthy. It's very possible that they have been talked about already (have I mentioned that I have about a year's worth of ecto digest to catch up on?) So forgive me if they have. PAPER MOON: fans of early CARDIGANS (pre-Love Fool) would appreciate their latest. It has a very early 90's feel to it (think THE SUNDAYS, OCTOBER PROJECT, THE INNOCENCE MISSION) and I mean that in a good way. SARAH NIXEY: lead singer of BLACK BOX RECORDER puts out a solo record. Indietronica pop goodness. TRACEY THORN: it only took her 24 years (good lord has it been that long?) since her last solo album. Equal parts A DISTANT SHORE (her first solo) and later electronica EBTG, the album is worth the wait. BATS FOR LASHES: a perky goth CAT POWER. Is that possible? CORRINA REPP: fans of LISA GERMANO should check her out. EMILY HAINES and THE SOFT SKELETON/AMY MILLAN: Sure everyone is raved about RILO KILEY's lead singer JENNY LEWIS' solo album, but these two quietly released a couple of solo albums away from their bands (METRIC and STARS respectively) in the same vein (quiet introspective folk rock singer songwriter with a bit of twang). It took me awhile to get into them (they were released about a year ago) but whatever...I'm slow on the uptake sometimes. ASOBI SEKSU: Japanese indie punk shoegazer singer. Out of New York, their early stuff totally reminds me of the 90s LUSH/MY BLOODY VALENTINE sort of glazy guitar wash, while other songs are a whole lot harder SONIC YOUTH and then a few songs that are either mellow singer and guitar, or perky twee indiepop bouncing all over the place. Half of it is sung in Japanese, and half in English. Their latest CITRUS is highly recommended as it merges all the sounds together into something a little more cohesive. ANDREW BIRD: he's released a few albums on ANI DIFRANCO's RIGHTEOUS BABE label, but his latest ARMCHAIR APOCALPYSE is out on a different label. It's fantastic. Intelligent singer songwriter storyteller. Fans of Jens Lekman and Sufjan Stevens should definitely check him out. The album has been on constant rotation in my player - and I've had it two months now. That9s all. I've probably missed a bunch but oh well. Thank you for reading my ramblings. The general theme is to take a critical look at the idea of girl power in its many forms--from the riot grrrls to the Spice Girls, Britney Spears to Beyonce, "girls kick ass" baby tees to girls rock camps, and everything in between--and I'm interviewing lots of musicians, critics, and the like, but I also really want to hear from fans. I've included a few questions to prompt deep thoughts, but I'm interested in really anything you have to say on the subject. I hope you'll spend some time thinking about this, but I'd also love to get your answers sooner rather than later. Please send them to mnmeltzer@gmail.com. Please do forward this to friends (male and female alike), mailing lists, bulletin boards, post on blogs, whatever! Best, Marisa PS: The Sassy book is out and full of quotes from fans I contacted through a very similar mass email about two years ago. More info is at http://www.howsassychangedmylife.com/. I'd like your name and age. Define "girl power" as you see it. Was it third wave feminism given a sparkly, apolitical makeover? Or a social phenomenon? Even though this book is mostly about the 90s, I'm also talking about the decades before. What kind of music did you grow up listening to? I'm especially interested in music by women, of course. Were you glued to watching Madonna and Cyndi Lauper on MTV? Did you have an intense listening to Joni-Mitchell-in-my-bedroom phase? What music were you listening to in the 90s? And what are you listening to now? Specific songs, bands, whatever comes to mind. I would absolutely love to hear anecdotes about concerts you've attended. Did you see boys getting pushed out of the front at a Bikini Kill show? Did you go to Lilith Fair for Liz Phair, but stayed so you could sing along to the Indigo Girls? Did you organize a Ladyfest? Did you and your best friend go see Christina Aguilera play at Madison Square Garden? Was there a stronger sense of female empowerment, not just in music, but in our culture in general, during the 90s? What do you think of the decade now? Now that Sleater-Kinney broke up, Le Tigre is on some kind of extended hiatus, Destiny's Child is no longer, and Ladyfests seem to be on the wane, is this a dark moment for women in music? Will popular music be always and forever a boys' club, or are we on the verge of some kind of real cultural change? I would love to hear your thoughts on where you think this is all headed--what makes you depressed and what gives you hope? What is girl power today? - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2007 15:47:42 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: Survey for book on Women In Music In The '90s > I'm writing a book about women, music, and the 1990s for the > publisher Farrar, Straus and Giroux, to be published in early 2009. > The general theme is to take a critical look at the idea of girl > power in its many forms--from the riot grrrls to the Spice Girls, > Britney Spears to Beyonce, "girls kick ass" baby tees to girls rock > camps, and everything in between What about just women who make music, without any of the political hooha associated with their genitals? The kind of music I listen to and play is never talked about when someone writes about all of that stuff above. I had a radio show for many many years, featuring women ("Suspended In Gaffa - a celebration of the female voice") and never played any of the people you mentioned in this notice, and I never once considered it a "feminist" or "womyn's" music show. I have 8 podcasts (music only, no talk) up at http://suspended-in-gaffa.com (also streamed at http://www.myspace.com/gaffashow) that are inspired by my old radio show. It'd be interesting to know if any one of those artists are even mentioned in your book. I wonder, because it sounds like what you want is controversy and women/music/events that caused some sort of temporary shake-up, then died down again. There's nothing wrong with that, but as someone who was deeply involved in music by women for years, that doesn't pique my interest much. I'd rather know about the women who are super serious about their art. Will Kate Bush and her widespread influence be mentioned in the book? Will the fascinating and troubling story of Happy Rhodes be mentioned in your book? They are both serious artists who make music for the ages, not for some temporary political reasons. (Btw, have you even *heard* of Happy Rhodes, a brilliant artist who's been making music for over 20 years, has 11 albums, and who will surely be written about by music historians in the future, but who is so totally obscure and unknown today she's NEVER mentioned when people write about women in music) > I'd like your name and age. I was always interested when a woman was played, but was generally usually disappointed. Madonna's music never interested me but I came to admire her for her do-it-your-own-way philosophy. I do like some songs. I always thought Cyndi Lauper was very very talented, and not just a novelty act. That's partially because I had her pre-"Girls Just Want To Have Fun" album with Blue Angel. > Did you have an intense listening to Joni-Mitchell-in-my-bedroom phase? Nope. Never got into Joni/Judy/Janis/Joan. I respect them (well, maybe not Judy Collins, I never could stand her) but I never listened to them. It was in a Toriphile friend's LiveJournal, actually. I thought if she heard from enough ectophiles, that might get her thinking outside of the Top-40 box and make her aware of all of the great female artists who made music under the radar in the last decade. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #120 ***************************
