Her hair was in an elegant upswept style, and she wore two off the shoulder gowns (one blue, the other white) and dove-gray high heels. There was no yang tchin or podium, so she demonstrated stage presence by dramatic arm gestures that settled her into the songs. She was accompanied by a pianist and a synthesist, along with a computer/sequencer. The Silver Tree songs, which sound a little like sterile museum pieces on disc, came aliveespecially her reading of In Exile. Other songs performed were The Sea Whisperer, Sacrifice, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Hymn for the Fallen, Space Weaver, Now We Are Free, and Sanvean. She unearthed a wonderful The Host of Seraphim, one of my favorite Dead Can Dance songs, and performed Dreams Made Flesh with a piano rather than the hammered dulcimer. There were also a few new unrecorded pieces sung in English that took detour into the Portishead/ early Goldfrapp territoryelectro-torch songs. These were sultry and she transformed her angelic style to a witchy growl. As usual, she was aloof during the performances, and had no stage banter until the very end, when she gave an effusive thanks to her personal assistant. However, I > don't have time to watch the ones for songs I don't know, and for the > ones I do know I like the video part even less than "Larsen." French music videos, even by big artists, are usually pretty cheapo and lame I reckon. It's weird how indie groups in NZ often make great vids for $1000 (I think that's what the govt gives for video making, though Chris Knox has been known to divide it up and make several for that price), and then Zazie has shoddy Jane Austen dress-ups, naked models or walks through a supermarket, and Vanessa Paradis (ick!) stands on a sandy hillside and makes pretend guns with her fingers. My fav Zazie video is probably Tous des anges (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTCzAQLmcwc) - I like the simple concept (the people in the deserted street, a ghostly memory of a night of action).
