Speaking of cursed doings, if you buy the ordinary version of the album at Barnes & Noble, you get an extra track, but if you buy the special ed., you get no extra track (and the extra track is different from the one you get from iTunes). B-sides I'm alright with, but purchasing multiple versions of an album? No. I still haven't heard non-live Garlands and yet my life is toddling along OK. Except for the bathtub full of rusty water and the ineffectual plunger, but that's not Tori's fault. It has terrific mainstream appeal while still sounding authentic, and the production is outstanding. In those respects it has the same kind of attraction that Sarah McLachlan's best albums do. With all the hype surrounding Missy, especially in Australia where she's such a superstar, I thought there was a pretty good chance her second album would be doomed with the sophomore jinx, but quite the opposite is true -- On a Clear Night is a really nice progression for her. With apologies to those of you in Australia who have to endure the mania about her, she's still not at that level over here (yet). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2007 22:29:32 +0200 From: "Leonora Christina Skov" Subject: Katharina Nuttall, Sara Grabow & Maia Hirasawa I totally agree with Yngve. Katharina Nuttalls solo debut is pure bliss. Here is the review I posted on emusic the other day: My most vivid memory of the 2005 SheMusic Festival in Malmoe, Sweden, is definitely Swedish/Norwegian Katharina Nuttall co-producer of Ane Brun. SheMusic had invited a bunch of lesser known singer/songwriters to play short gigs before Laleh went on stage (check her out, too) and there had already been so many women with guitars and women with pianos that they had all started to sound alike. But Katharina's deep dramatic voice think Alison Moyet or Eva Dahlgren - her enormous stage presence and fierce piano-playing blew me away. I didn't want the concert to end and thus, I am overjoyed to find her here. Her debut is superb. It is quite dark and melancholic with great personal lyrics and a whole lot of drama. Take a listen on her homepage http://www.katharinanuttall.com/startmusic.htm. I am particularly fond of Let Me Come. The other day I realized that SARA GRABOWs solo disc Blueberries as well as her collaboration-project with Noah Rosanes, SARANOAH, are available through emusic. That was a happy day in my life. Sara is often compared to Tina Dico, presumably because they are both Danish singer/songwriters, but really, they have very little in common. Saras music is edgier and twangier, her voice is more powerful and her lyrics come across as quick-witted, intimate stories. Sara caused quite a commotion a few months back when she revealed in some TV-programme that her opening song Nighttime Terror was in fact inspired by her own sleep terror disorder. Apparently a lot of people suffer from that. If you enjoy this album you will love Danish artists like Dicte and Randi Laubek. Oh, and Swedish/Japanese MAIA HIRASAWA (www.maiahirasawa) whom I have mentioned on this list before, has finally released her debut album Though I'm Just Me. I have not heard it yet, but she gets splendid reviews all over the place and has just been compared to Regina Spektor and Frida Hyvvnen in Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.
