Do tell ... ? The second of the Dark Tower series has the protagonist, Roland, adding other people to his band of gunslingers chasing after [Walter | Flagg | whomever]. These other gunslingers come from our own world and are "drawn" or pulled through free-standing doors that Roland comes across. jeff n.p. still _The Crane Wife_ by The Decemberists. I think it's worth pointing out that for me, the best albums from both Death Cab for Cutie and The Decemberists are, to date, their major label debuts, despite fears of what might happen after the jump from indie labels. First, thanks Marc. One of them I'd not heard before. I wish "Yo George" were longer, and I'm REALLY upset that the cover was changed. I thought the original was terrific and fierce... which brings me to my point. I'm a wee bit concerned. With every album, I feel a more distant Tori. It's weird, but I have to say after a few runs of being enthralled with "The Beekeeper" it's been replaced again by earlier Tori work. (However, there are serious gems that force me to pull it out again and again, but I like my boots of the tour more.) I prefer long albums. And since "Little Earthquakes" it has taken me a few listens to warm up to most of her work (especially Pele, which turned into one of my absolute favorites until friends refused to ride in my car unless something else played. I now love them all equally.) Yanyhoo, what brought me out of the woodwork was Ethan's comment on: > "i i i i am an m i l f, don't you forget"...still grinning. > > Not to knock on wood, but I think this is going to be something > kinda special. Funny. That line turned me SO off. Dunno why, but I was OK with the song, despite the uber-pop that clearly drives it until that line, which floored me. I may be too old, but I miss the less-pop Tori. She's finally getting the wide recognition she's deserved forever, but I really am a-skeered that this will be like the worst of the Beekeeper run amok -- too much "soccer mom'd and their kids" crowd-pleasing. That's at least what it feels like to me. I know there'll be awesome pieces of work. However, my initial dislike of "Big Wheel" (I'm warming to "Bouncing off Clouds, and the others didn't disappoint much) combined with the cover change, I worry that Tori is allowing her strong self to be overtaken by pleasing everyone, which seems so completely out of character. Funny...while I can easily view "Big Wheel" as a targeted crowd-pleaser, I can't say I hear within it the lack of a strong self. I like "m i l f" because of its exquisite satire value -- though shouldn't it really be "m y l f"? -- and because I like to hear Tori having fun. If it's also catchy enough to snare a few soccer moms, I'm happy for her and look forward to the "300"-esque battle for concert tickets. And really, is it thematically *that* far removed from, let's say, "Leather"? I also like her decision to open with "Yo George," but to get in and get out and get on with undermining the patriarchy with a bit more subtlety. Buck up, little camper!
