But seeing my name mentioned twice in one week I have to share my own first Happy experience of course... Marcel wrote: > I think it was Marion who told me about this artist called Happy Rhodes > and the ecto mailing list - but I don't remember exactly. I have to thank Marcel in return for my first experience with Happy. :) My memory is a bit blurry as well, but I think I remember mentioning Happy to him way back when in 1993 / 1994, because I kept reading about her on the internet, on the Tori Amos mailing list and love-hounds/gaffa, and I was really interested in her music (but I had no idea how or where to find her albums). So Marcel finally found a copy of RhodeSongs, and I can remember very clearly when I first heard that. We went to see Tori in concert in Nijmegen, sometime in May 1994, and the day after that Marcel played "Feed the fire" for me at last. I was hooked immediately, and the next few months we combined our Happy album-buying efforts to get as many of her albums as quickly as we could, sharing them at first, until each of us had our own complete set. I find it hard to believe it's been so long already, I've been on this list for some 13 years now... To this day Happy is still my very favourite singer, I listen to her music at least a few times per week as she comes up on the random shuffle of my mp3-(ogg-)player quite often. And even though I rarely post here anymore, I still enjoy reading this list and all of the recommendations I pick up from here. Kind regards, Marion n.p. Eisley - Room noises n.r. Hi, JoAnn wondered: > Has anyone heard anything about the new Bjork, Volta, which is coming > out a week later? I haven't, but I haven't really been looking for info, either. woj and I have tickets to see her at Radio City on May 2, and I have a feeling that going into it completely spoiler-free is the right thing to do. Every time I've seen Bjork perform it's been transcendent in its own way. I'm *really* looking forward to this show, and to the album as well. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 13:45:55 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Internet Radio royalty update Hi, 2005.carnivore99@verizon.net wrote: > Sad news making the rounds tonight. I don't think that enough independent labels and artists really grasp exactly what this is going to mean for them, so the chorus of protest hasn't been nearly as strong as it should be. Sure, SoundExchange has been coming through for a lot of them thus far, but that is about to come to a screeching halt. Maybe when those checks stop coming in, they'll finally realize what's been done. I'm holding out hope that some enterprising folks outside of the U.S. will step into the yawning breach that's about to open up to provide an alternate avenue for independent musicians to get heard online. Damn, but I'm going to miss Radio Paradise and Pandora, though ... :/ (Even if they somehow manage to survive, knowing that merely by tuning in I'm costing these webcasters money they don't have is too much for me. I just won't be able to bring myself to listen to US-based streams any more.) I need to get that "F*CK THE RIAA" bumper sticker for my car I've been wanting for a while now ... :P > '"Our artists and labels look forward to working with the > Internet radio industry - large and small, commercial and noncommercial > - so that together we can ensure it succeeds as a place where great > music is available to music lovers of all genres," said SoundExchange > head Simson in a statement. That just turns my stomach. "Our MAJOR LABEL artists and MAJOR labels" is what they really mean. Independent music has been thriving online outside of the corporate umbrella, and this is the only way the RIAA and the majors can see to squash the indies flat. It's not too late, though -- if you live in the U.S. and you haven't yet written to your Congresscritters about this issue, *please* do so. If a bill is passed mandating that online royalty rates be calculated using the same formula as broadcast (i.e. one spin = one spin), then maybe Internet radio in the U.S. can be saved. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 17:41:49 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Vote For Rachael Sage's Video Hi, And now for a moment of shameless promotion ... :) Rachael Sage's video for "Wildflower" has been shown on LOGO's "NewNowNext" for the past two weeks, and now it's been nominated for their contest "The Click List". People vote for their favorite videos online, and then the top 10 are shown on "The Click List" on Fridays at midnight. The voting site is here: http://www.logoonline.com/shows/dyn/the_click_list/video_voting.jhtml It's been brought to my attention that the videos on this site are Windoze Media only, so to view the video it's probably best to either check it out in Quicktime on Rachael's site (http://www.rachaelsage.com/video.html) or on her MySpace (http://myspace.com/rachaelsage). Then go on back to LOGO's site to vote for it. :) This is the first time Rachael has had a video on the teevee, so we're pretty excited. I'm also excited because I worked on the video (where "work" = "press PLAY on the boombox 8554 times over the course of the 3 day shoot" ;), so I feel like it's partially my baby, too. :) (It's also going to be shown on the HBO Zone channel in between movies, apparently ... these are all channels my crappy cable system wouldn't ever dream of carrying so I'll never know, but if anyone happens to see it on there, drop me a line!) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 19:10:31 -0400 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: Vote For Rachael Sage's Video I got the message from MPress earlier and went to vote for the video, but... you have to submit your name and email address, and the privacy policy looks like it gives them open season to spam you whenever they want. OK... so I have a question. Is it possible for the independent labels and artists to license their music to Internet broadcasters on different terms than the ones the Copyright Royalty Board and SoundExchange want to require? What keeps the indies from saying, "OK, if you want to be that way, we'll license our music to Internet broadcasters at one spin = one spin. We'll be happy to be the only music that webcasters are going to carry from now on; see you major labels and major artists later." ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #98 **************************
