While I was never a humungous fan, his books do figure largely in my 70s adolescence, particularly "Cat's Cradle", "Slaughterhouse Five" and "Welcome to the Monkey House" (and I still have my sister's copy of "Sirens of Titan" from back then, annotated in her handwriting). I was slow to catch on to him, hindered by the almost fervent idolatry for him that was around me at the time and the fact that the first book of his I read was "Breakfast of Champions", which seemed like a massive in- joke, and one I wasn't in on. Still, he always seemed like a great character, and I loved his sense of humour, even when he was writing about the most horrific things. Thanks for everything, Kurt, Adam K. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 02:38:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: NYC: Innocence Mission @ Southpaw postponed - --- Paul Blair wrote: > > Erin McKeown is still scheduled to play at Southpaw > at 7:30 on 4/20, > which I'll miss because I'm going to see Loreena > McKennitt instead. Enjoy! We did attend Loreena's Antwerp show last Friday night. That woman indeed does know how to put on a show. We turned it into a long weekend in Belgium, which was quite enjoyable in itself, but the highlight certainly was the concert. Ellen "Literature stops in 1100. I go to so few performances nowadays, and this one sounds really intriguing. Come on, invoking Jane Siberry circa The Walking is sure to pique my interest. So doesn't it figure that I will be in Chicago for a conference on April 19th? I did see a really sweet show a couple nights ago at Tufts University by Jay Brannon from the film SHORTBUS and from YouTube fame. He was quite endearing, very funny, and has a lovely voice. Can't wait to hear the new Feist. Michael n.p. The gurgling of the coffee brewing. It's 6:20 in the morning and I just got up recently! n.r. Carnival by Elizabeth Bear Michael R. Well, gee. I'd have thought by now that y'all would know I don't recommend stuff unless it definitely doesn't suck. ;) I will admit that I have not yet been able to see her perform live ... but her recordings are certainly well worth your time, as Neile indicated. I'd say the show is a worthwile $7 risk. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 07:47:37 -0400 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: Rachel Smith CD Release In Boston On 4/12/07, Michael Colford wrote: > n.r. At the risk of dating myself in public, I will admit that the thing that made me a fan was that he gave my college commencement address. I remember that, for me, it was a bittersweet day, happy to go but sorry to part, and his little speech brightened my mood for the day considerably. If you are interested, the speech was later published in his collection "Palm Sunday", in the chapter "Funnier on Paper Than Most People". In re-reading it today, I am touched by how pertinent and funny it still is. And so it goes, indeed. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 12:09:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Bernie Mojzes Subject: Re: Kurt Vonnegut: so it goes There've been a number of really good write-ups in the press, but I think that this says it best: http://www.vonnegut.com/ brni > Likewise, I was saddened to hear of his death this morning. > > At the risk of dating myself in public, I will admit that the thing that made > me a fan was that he gave my college commencement address.
