I'd like to announce two upcoming shows: in San Francisco and New York City. TUESDAY, APRIL 17th 8:30 PM at the CAFE DU NORD 2170 MARKET ST. SAN FRANCISCO admission $15 with ALAN LIN, violin For the first time, I will be playing with violinist ALAN LIN, whose playing I have admired for years.....this is a special and rare duo performance. And I am so proud to be opening for my amazing friend AMY X NEUBURG and her Cello ChiXtet. They will be performing her staggeringly beautiful new song-cycle "The Secret Language of Subways" - it is unlike anything you've heard before. Also, the very cool singer/keyboardist DEBORA PETRINA is coming all the way from Padua, Italy to open the evening with songs from her "New Eyes Songbook". http://www.amyxneuburg.com http://www.debora-petrina.com http://www.cafedunord.com _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+ THURSDAY, MAY 17th 8:00 PM ROCKWOOD MUSIC HALL 196 ALLEN ST. NEW YORK CITY I think this is the first bill I've ever shared with the amazing singer-songwriter NOE VENABLE and I am soooooo excited to hear music from her upcoming album. There will be others that night too but I don't have any info. yet. Please check the Rockwood website soon. http://www.noevenable.com http://www.rockwoodmusichall.com As for what I'll be performing at these shows: I spent a reclusive week late last Fall up in Anchor Bay on the northern CA coast...just me and my keyboard and the redwoods and big waves crashing on big rocks and Mercer's Duke Ellington bio and some Dee Dee Bridgewater and Chick Corea CDs and a big bowl of ripe persimmons (I of course had to make myself a gooey cake up there....) . So, besides the 5 extra pounds, somehow I returned with a batch of songs that I am creatively calling my "Anchor Bay Songs"........and I want to play these live at least a few times before I attempt to record them for posterity. I'll also be playing some tunes from "Exchange", the songs I premiered in 2006. I really hope to see some of you soon at one of these concerts! _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_A FEW OTHER THINGS_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+ ARTICLE/INTERVIEW Three and 1/2 years after I left France, they are finally going to find out about the music I wrote while I lived there! The French progressive rock mag BIG BANG is featuring me in an article/interview this month. It won't be online, so I will give you a link here to the French text.....I may translate it on the site at some point but for now check out Babelfish's colorful deciphering machine........ http://www.emilybezar.com/Bigbang.asp AND JUST FOR FUN.......... http://www.emilybezar.com/music/patsykiri.mp3 Here is a surprise I've unearthed as I slowly try to archive all my ancient dribs and drabs from various tape formats onto the computer. In honor of the upcoming 20th anniversary of my college graduation, I'll let you hear a shortened version (it was 20 minutes long!) of this piece that I created at Oberlin so long ago.... a mashup circa 1986 I suppose. It was the soundtrack to a dance performance and what you will hear is my interpretation of the title "Touch 'N Go Heart" (I think the choreographer said something minimal like "opera: country: heartbreak" ). My 20-year memory is hazy but I remember multiple all-nighters and fragile lo-fi tape loops slung around doorknobs and chairs and the Buchla and the Moog and some antique, bright blue delay all instructed to eat the loops alive. Don't tell Kiri's or Pasty's record labels about this....(nooooo, none of these voices are mine - I WISH!). Thanks again for listening and I will keep you posted....... xo Emily http://www.emilybezar.com ____________________________________________ If you would like to be deleted from Emily's mailing list, please respond with "REMOVE ME" in the subject line. I don't quite understand this one, and maybe I'm showing my own ignorance here. "vwuh" is not a sound in the english language, and "wallah!" is a pretty close approximation of the french word in speech. "vwuh-lah!" is probably a bit closer, but the v-sound is more subtle than that. What makes hearing "wallah" so bad, compared to all the other mispronunciations? >>And while it doesn't seem to fit the definition of an egg >>corn there's the misused phrase "could care less," which always makes >>me wonder if people even think about what they're saying. > > I agree, but I translate this as short for "I could care less, but > that would require some effort." > You're entirely too kind with that one. I'd only go for that if someone put the emphasis on "could", as in, "I could care less..." We simply can no longer afford the rent and all of the other costs associated with doing business on the Lower East Side. The neighborhood around us has been increasingly consumed by "luxury condominiums", boutique hotels and glass towers, all making the value of our salvaged space worth more then our business could ever realistically support. We have also been repeatedly harassed by the city's Quality of Life Task Force which resulted in the debilitating closing of the ))sub((tonic lounge in January. Coincidentally, this campaign began as our immediate neighbor, the Blue Condominium building - a symbol of the new Lower East Side - prepared to open its doors. As a business, we take responsibility for mistakes made along the way. If profit had been our chief motivation we could have changed our programming to something more mainstream and financially lucrative. Instead we were more committed to a certain type of music and loyal to the community that supported us. As a result, we've always just survived but never really prospered. It is, however, unfortunate that it is so difficult for small businesses to operate in this city and that a chain store that can afford a high rent is more desirable than a place like Tonic that has a different kind of value. While this is certainly the end of Tonic at 107 Norfolk Street, we remain committed to what Tonic represents and plan to try again in some form as soon as possible. In the interim, Tonic will make efforts to present new music in existing venues such as the Abron's Arts Center located just a few blocks away. We invite you to join us as often as you can over our remaining days to help us celebrate Tonic and more importantly the amazing artists, our unwavering staff, and the nurturing community that made Tonic possible. It's because of you that we've stayed open as long as we have. Thank you! Sincerely, Melissa and John ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2007 12:11:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Tim Jones-Yelvington Subject: Re: Discs on random (Was the eggcorn string) It is great fun. This album was made for flying down the highway with no other cars on the road. It has a very open, free sound. Not all that similar to her last few studio albums, but not out of line with her overall catalog. More folk, more rock, more energy maybe? Just more fun? She mentions that it's the first time since 1995 that she worked with a professional producer. Maybe that has something to do with it? Who cares? Just turn it on and turn it up. Mary Chapin Carpenter, like Lucy Kaplansky, released her last album (Between Here and Gone) in 2004, and it was the best album she'd made in years. But her new album, The Calling, just blows it away. That's partially because it's a more up-tempo album. But there are beautiful ballads here too; they just don't feel quite so slow. Overall, in the lyrics, the playing, there's more energy, more passion, more fight. Where the last album was more reflective, The Calling is more determined, taking a stand on personal politics and philosophy. Recent NPR story (with performances of 4 songs) at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9310666 Lucy Kaplansky - Over the Hills Lucy Kaplansky's gotten consistently better over her last couple of albums. I'm not sure that Over the Hills tops 2004's The Red Thread, but it's right up there. The arrangements and playing may even be better. Lyrically, the songs range from putting a child to sleep to domestic abuse to childhood memories. I was surprised to find out that fully half the tracks are covers. Usually the better songs on Lucy's album are the ones she wrote (or cowrote) herself. But these all work together; she makes all these stories her own. I'm not sure of the exact details, but from what I gather the current Sin-e's demise has more to do with poor management than simply getting priced out of existence as Tonic and so many others in Manhattan have been. Here's hoping that John Zorn et al. are able to find an alternate space in Brooklyn. (Soon places will start getting priced out of Brooklyn, then what? A Renaissance in Queens? Or, gods forbid, Staten Island??) And people wonder why the New York "scene" is fading fast. Sigh. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2007 21:31:30 -0500 From: CollectedSounds Subject: Re: **RACHAEL SAGE & GREGORY DOUGLASS @ THE LIVING ROOM 4/07** > Rachael will appear with her full band The Sequins, following a performance > by her good friend & fellow art-pop innovator Gregory Douglass, If any of you can go to this you should. they both put on fantastic shows. Speaking of Vienna, Marc and I just returned from seeing her once again at the Barns at Wolftrap (along with our own Mike Matthews and his lovely wife) The opening act was the fairly forgettable David Berkley. The redeeming part of his set was the final song, when Vienna came out and sang a duet on his, "Glory." That was pretty, especially as they sang it fully unplugged -- no mic's, no amp on the acoustic guitar. Lovely! After that, Vienna began a 1.5 hour set featuring not only the usual suspects, Deena Macabee and Marika Hughes, but also percussionist Alex Wong. I think this is the first time I've seen her perform with a percussionist and it gave a much fuller sound to the combo. Vienna came out alone to start the show, was joined by Deena and Marika on the second song, and finally Alex came out for the third. Fire and Rain (James Taylor) Shasta Whatever You Want avant garde noise making turning into fur elise turning into Unwritten Letter #1 Nothing Without You Recessional Homecoming That's Where I'll Be (Brian Webb) Gravity Tower (a pretty duet w/ David Berkley) Transcontinental 1:30am Blue Caravan 1br/1ba, incorporating Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" in the bridge! I Don't Feel So Well Harbor City Hall Green Island Lullaby (a capella and unplugged) As always, a fantastic show. Vienna's between-song banter remains much the same, but still fun to hear. Many of the songs featured interesting new arrangements, and the addition of Alex Wong really made this show stand out. Looking over old playlists, I see that when the four of us saw Vienna at the Barns in October of '05, she covered another Brian Webb song. Perhaps it's something about the venue? Also worth noting is that Vienna said that, as of last Sunday, she's now living in NYC! jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2007 20:58:53 -0700 From: Damon Subject: caveman shoestore back from the dead? hey, why haven't i seen any mention of this? http://cdbaby.com/cd/cavemanshoe anyone heard it and have any thoughts? i'm just listening to the samples now - not quite sure yet, but i think CS always takes some grokking. i absolutely adore _flux_... haven't heard _master cylinder or the hughscore release. - -damon - -- dl+ecto@usrbin.ca: protecting my real address since 2002 (too late!) > EWS starts here! < ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2007 00:44:09 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: RE: Beware the eggcorn Hi, re: Specialty and Speciality. Once I read your note I remembered this, however, usage of the English spelling/ pronunciation on the American Weather channel is not only a mistake but will tend to mis-educate the masses. Before General Haig used the phrase;' Let me put a caveat on that!" it was unheard of. It is now in common parlance.
