Over on the Cowboy Junkies message board, someone pointed out that Sade's hit "Smooth Operator" has the line: "Coast to coast, L.A. to Chicago" He wrote: "I've heard the song for years over the radio and never thought twice about that line until someone pointed it out to me this morning." I suppose one could think about it as "east-to-west, south-to-north," but LA to Chicago doesn't really cover south-to-north either. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 08:43:50 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Eleni Mandell I've seen her name on and off on the list over the years and heard good things about her, but I haven't heard much except a few web samples. Her new album is shooting my way, but I was wondering - - what sort of name recognition does Eleni Mandell have? Outside of a small number of ecto posts, I've never seen mention of her anywhere. My first reaction was, Bjork meets Mono? Their Hybrid album is being released in Canada on April 24, I'm not sure about the rest of the world. www.elsiane.com www.myspace.com/elsiane - with video goodness Lindi Ortega - Fall From Grace After a five-year absence she's back with a first-rate pop album with rock and country influences, much of it more upbeat than the lone clip found on her MySpace page. I just love her voice - this one has been getting lots of spins in my player since I got it. www.lindiortega.com www.myspace.com/lindimusic HUMANWINE This is for the Dresden Dolls fans. They're currently on tour across the U.S. and I imagine their show must be a blast! The NYC show has just been moved from Tonic to Crash Mansion on April 19. www.humanwine.org www.myspace.com/HUMANWINE Dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 19:53:32 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Eleni Mandell Thanks for the comments Damon! I hope they end up in the ectoguide. She's pretty well lambasted there. I've been totally grooving on Erin McKeown lately. She did an amazing house concert here in January, and is coming back for a solo show at the end of the month with Melissa Ferrick (who is playing as a trio). I made a stop at "Other Music" while in New York recently, and discovered Alela Diane, who seems to get compared to freak-folkers like Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart, but whose vocal reminds me just as much of Ane Brun, as well as Essie Jain, a lovely, understated, broody folk/rocker. I've also been listening nonstop to the soundtrack for "Spring Awakening," the fantastic Duncan Sheik-composed musical currently playing on B-way (which I had the privilege of seeing during my trip). Musically, it's far more dark and dissonant and delicate than most rock musicals, b/c of that special Duncan Sheikishness, which makes it not so much rock musical as broody indie-pop musical, which is pretty innovative when you think about it. Also a risky and relevant show that everyone should try to see if given the opportunity. Also went to see Lucy Roche perform at Pete's Candy and ended up getting a free two-song performance by her brother Rufus, which was pretty sweet. ~tim On 4/2/07 4:40 PM, "DanStark" <2005.carnivore99@verizon.net> wrote: > Just a quick post with some things that have caught my attention recently: > > > Elsiane - Hybrid > I caught the song Vaporous on a Canadian broadcast and had to look > them up. With Dido and Imogen and Feist and Jem and Kate Havnevik and Roisin and Alison Goldfrapp, I thought I might have had my fill of chilled electronica women.... But good music is good music, and this one is the perfect combination of edgy and predictable. Has anyone heard the new Jonatha? I particularly like: a nominal egg (an arm and a leg) deformation of character (defamation of character) doggy-dog world (dog-eat-dog world) on the spurt [or sperm] of the moment (on the spur of the moment) old timers (Alzheimer's) nip it in the butt (nip it in the bud) pier-to-pier network (peer-to-peer network) reeking havoc or wrecking havok (wreaking havoc) take it for granite (take it for granted) There is also a database (containing over 500 eggcorns) here: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #81 **************************
