Actually, that reminds me of a song by an indie band, The Driven: "Jesus Loves You More if You Can Drive". The lyrics are http://www.thedriven.co.uk/content/lyrics.php This whole abdication of personal responsibility opens up some interesting possibilities, mind. "Excuse me sir, do you know how fast you were going when you ran that red light?" "Oh, officer, you'd have to pray to Jesus for that answer. He's my designated driver". Car-pooling could be fun, too. I hear Allah's a terrible back-seat driver. But I've said enough, and maybe too much... adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2007 12:41:14 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: What would Jesus drive? Hi, Once upon a time taking Jesus as your personal savior meant that whatever the bad guys did to your body, your soul was safe from the Devil. Nowadays, it seems, the idea of closing your eyes and throwing your hands in the air and expecting Jesus to save your corporeal body from wear and tear is not a stupid thing to do. Also: do you remeber when people pondered as to just what the soul was? If you sold it to the devil would you miss it, etc? Now, there seems to be no difference between the soul and the ego. I think it's worth remembering that there are different brands of everything. Christian music spans rock, metal, reggae, folk, country, pop, etc. As with all other music, some of it is excellent; some is really bad. Christian theology runs from active to passive, very liberal to highly intolerant. Christian beliefs have changed over time, and will change again. Vocal evangelism (the kind that most pisses people off) is not the only strain of Christianity today. I'm not trying to silence discussion. I've always enjoyed that ecto discussions veer from music to tv, sports, politics, books or whatever else is on people's mind. I do think that because of Christianity's majority status in America, a lot of people will lump it all together and feel free to poke fun at it. In a way that (most people, at least I hope) don't judge all Muslims based on Islamic terrorists. So I hope it's clear that I'm not suggesting Christianity, or even religion in general, should be immune from discussion. Personal responsibility, free will, soul vs. body, soul vs. ego are all worthy and interesting topics of discussion. I'm just saying that there are all types on ecto. I'm fine with critiquing faith, but I don't think it's appropriate to lampoon it. The review has been a long time coming because, frankly, I didn't know what to say about it. It's not wholly original, yet she doesn't really sound like anyone else I've heard. There's a smattering of sounds, but none I can really pin down. I like it when I listen to it, but it doesn't call me to play it often. So I decided to give it a fair listen, several in fact, and here's what I can say: Allison has a sweet soprano voice. Her music could be described as soul-folk, a blend of blues and folk, with healthy doses of gospel, pop, and jazz. Any one of these styles may play center stage on any given song, but since there's a different blend of them on each song, this gives the album diversity in style while maintaining cohesiveness. It's kind of a smooth, late evening vibe. Overall, I like it. It's not innovative, or even particularly distinctive; at the same time she doesn't sound like anyone else either. I think the stronger songs start at the third track, especially those where she's just accompanying herself on piano. Her voice is a lighter one, and it works better on quieter, contemplative songs. She does yearning well. She also uses background vocals well. They often have a gospel choir feel, but restrained, so they don't overpower her voice. The first album is available for purchase at CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/sattinger. Last year she released a full-length album, Vox. You can hear 4 tracks at her MySpace page: http://myspace.com/allisonsattinger or at CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/sattinger2. The songs there are good and show the variety of hers styles. The album sounds quite promising. I plan to pick it up next time I order at CD Baby.
