I'm chilling for a bit before heading out to see Johnette Napolitano (and hopefully Mary Timony later, if I don't go to see Lesbians on Ecstasy instead :). Thought I'd pop in with a few ecto-ish notes from Austin so far. The discovery of the festival so far for me has been Toronto's The Hylozoists. I went to the Six Shooter Records party on Thursday afternoon, where I ran into Leanne Zacharias (cellist with Christine Fellows, among others) who invited me to come check out her group that evening. They were amazing. They were a 10-piece: cello, two violins, two vibraphones, two drum kits, trumpet, guitar, bass, and piano. No vox. Seriously cool. I saw them described somewhere as providing the soundtrack to a mad circus carousel or a really twisted indie movie, and that's pretty apt. Check them out: http://www.thehylozoists.com. Later that night I ended up at the Velour Records showcase, where I heard Kaki King (I can't say I saw her, because I didn't lay eyes on her the whole time -- not only was the place packed, but she was sitting down for her entire set and was thus utterly invisible unless you were in the front row). She's not as enjoyable when you can't see just what she's doing, but it was still pretty good. Then I managed to get a seat right up front for Paula Cole's triumpant return to live performance after 7 years out of the music business. She has a new album called _Courage_ coming out in June on Decca. I must say that if her set is any indication it might be a pretty sappy record ... but I'll probably pick it up anyway. She was in fine voice, too -- maybe a bit huskier these days, but she can still belt it out and hit all the notes. The only older songs she did were "This Fire" (a curious choice ... but thematically I think it fit with her new stuff quite well) and that old standby, "Jolene", which she still can blow out of the water. Her new band is quite good too. I'd venture a guess that any Paula Cole fan will want to catch her when she goes back out on tour later on this summer. Yesterday, for various reasons I only got to one thing: Duncan Sheik. I'm not really a fan and hadn't seen him before, and I admit I was pretty much dragged there, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. He was accompanied by cello, piano, bass and drums, and the presence of the cello and piano helped a lot. The show was also in a church and they had managed to make it sound great in the space, which also helped. I'm not familiar with his material, but I do know he did a couple songs from "Spring Awakening", the Broadway show he scored that is running now. That was pretty cool. (Then afterwards I got to hang backstage for a while, but that's a whole 'nother story... :) Today was the reason I'm here: MPress Records' "MPressFest", to launch the release of our "New Arrivals: Volume 2" compilation to benefit World Hunger Year. It was a great afternoon, featuring (among others) Anne Heaton, Gregory Douglass, Meika Pauley, Melissa Ferrick, and somebody named Rachael Sage. ;) I am proud to note that all the sets ran exactly on time -- when I'm stage managing, I don't mess around. And oh yeah, the music kicked ass, too. I'll report back on tonight's festivities later ... time to run see Johnette now. (Coincidentally I've had Concrete Blonde's greatest hits CD in my car for the past few weeks, so I'm really really excited about this.) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2007 02:32:38 -0500 From: "robert bristow-johnson" Subject: Re: Noe Venable's show this evening > if Robert Bristow-Johnson was there I didn't know to > recognize him. yeah. sorry. alas, i didn't make it. the storm we had sorta scared me from driving (it was kinda nasty and icy up here and i heard NYC got whacked by it too) and i didn't figger out how to do the Chinatown bus thing. focke. :-( so i saw a sorta-kinda Irish rock band (Bleedin Bleedins) in an Allston pub. ran into a couple (actually it was a bother and a sister) who drove up from Brooklyn. told them i wish we could have traded cities of residence for the evening, i wanted to be down there. i regret not making the trip, but i did get spooked by the noreaster. well, there's May 17th. i'm gonna quit work early and go to that. maybe take the two days off and see some other old acquatances down there. i note that she did "Into the Wild" and that is not on any CD yet. it was intriguing when i did see her in 2005 and i really wanna see her perform again. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2007 10:44:45 -0400 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: Hylozoists [was: Paula Cole returns and other stories] On 3/17/07, meredith wrote: > The discovery of the festival so far for me has been Toronto's The Hylozoists. If you like shimmery film-noir instrumental music, Big Lazy is definitely worth investigating. (I discovered them one day at Knitting Factory playing before Elysian Fields.) They're a trio, with Stephen Ulrich providing the "Slinky, Smoky, Sexy, Slightly askew surf guitar." http://www.biglazymusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/biglazymusic They're NYC-based, and their upcoming dates fall out like this: Mar 23 11:00P Zebulon Williamsburg, Brooklyn Mar 28 11:00P Pete's Candy Store Williamsburg, Brooklyn Apr 7 11:00P The Tritone Philadelphia May 20 10:00P Tonic - New album release NYC ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #67 **************************
