Joni Mitchell 2. Aretha Franklin 3. Bonnie Raitt 4. Janis Joplin 5. Billie Holiday 6. Carole King 7. Emmylou Harris 8. Lucinda Williams 9. Patti Smith 10. Tori Amos not sure even i would put tori in the top 10 and i wouldn't have put lucinda williams there either if i were rob gordon to make such a list. but, the order aside, you can't really quibble too much with the other eight who placed. woj n.p. wyep p.s. i hope noe doesn't give me shit if i don't make it down to nyc tonight for her rockwood gig! ;) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2007 14:08:16 -0500 From: Timothy Jones-Yelvington Subject: Re: wyep women's history month Reminds me of VH1's 100 greatest women special in the 90's. Their top ten was: 1. Aretha Franklin 2. Tina Turner 3. Janis Joplin 4. Bonnie Raitt 5. Joni Mitchell 6. Billie Holiday 7. Chrissie Hynde 8. Madonna 9. Annie Lennox 10. Carole King Aside from the general stupidity of lists and their problematic politics, the fact that Laura Nyro tends to place as low as she does (she's #52 on the VH1 list) will never cease to bother me. We had a wonderful lunchtime gig with Jon Spurney and Joe Bonadio yesterday at the World Financial Center. A friend from myspace called Sean, who lives in Scotland, let me know that last night on BBC 4 TV there was a broadcast of highlights from the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow. One of the songs was "Gonna Get Through This World" which I sing with The Klezmatics. If you want to take a look, the footage is available at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/music/celticconnections/whatson/bbcfour_prog1.shtml Happy St. Patrick's Day! She then mentioned how happy she was to be sharing the stage with two people from Oceania--Richard Hammond, from New Zealand, was the other one. This developed into trying to get Greta to say "banana." ) Sparrow Ice Dragons (? "Time keeps rushing...") Howl (? "Howl to the almighty wind...") Into the Wild "I am the Prisoner of Sweetness" Wings Again "Apple heart, it will grow again" - a capella I was cruelly disappointed when Noe used "Look, Luck" for sound check but didn't actually play it. Overall I think the Vivaldi set better, though I loved the addition of the bass. I didn't get quite the impression of the strength of Noe's voice that I got from the Vivaldi show. However, one thing I did learn from this evening was that to me she's one of those performers like Sloan Wainwright who doesn't come across to me near as well recorded as live. Rockwood Music Hall is a bit cramped, but once the people who had been there to see the previous set left, there was room enough. I saw Don Keller there; if Robert Bristow-Johnson was there I didn't know to recognize him. After the show I stopped in at Caffe Vivaldi where I heard the tail end of a set by Dan Torres. He was accompanied by an excellent electric bass player, Ricardo Rodriguez, and someone else on a hand drum. Pretty high-energy stuff, especially for Vivaldi, and the guy's clearly talented and passionate. (He also has the Byronic "sensitive" look down cold.) After a few songs, though, it started sounding pretty much the same. http://www.dantorresmusic.net/ http://myspace.com/dantorres If he sounds interesting and if you're in New York City on March 31, you can see him at Rockwood Music Hall that night. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #66 **************************
