I'm going through my iTunes playlist and most songs that might be about friendship end up being about romantic love, which I don't think you're aiming for. At first, I thought "I got nothing", but maybe these would work (warning, some are silly choices but might be appropriate for the right person): Happy Rhodes: Glory Delgados: The Light Before We Land The Flaming Lips: Do You Realize? Grace Jones: I'm Not Perfect Suzanne Vega: Night Vision They Might Be Giants: Birdhouse in Your Soul; Snail Shell; O, Do Not Forsake Me; Experimental Film Tom Lehrer: Poisoning Pigeons in the Park VNV Nation: Perpetual 10,000 Maniacs: These Are Days The Birthday Massacre: The Dream Roger Miller: You Can't Rollerskate in a Buffallo Herd Morphine: Early to Bed Hope this helps, kj - -- Kim Justice justicekw@gmail.com "There can always be new beginnings -- even for people like us." - -- Susan Ivanova ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2007 22:09:16 -0500 (EST) From: Valerie Richardson Subject: Re: Katell We were sitting at the very front table of the left-hand wall. Me: tall, reddish hair, my blondish eight-year-old daughter, and my heavily bearded husband. We were joined by a youngish woman and her 80-year old parents. The mom had read the NYT article about Katell last summer and wanted to come and see her all the way from Philadelphia! I thought it was a somewhat uneven show. She did two of my favorites at the very beginning: "Hell of a Life" and "Hestia." The Asshole song was bizarre. She had offered a choice between two new songs: "Paul Gauguin" and "Asshole," and I was sorry that "Asshole" won. I guess I would say the show was "uneven" because the backing musicians seemed either tentative or not really integrated with what Katell was doing. I guess that "not well rehearsed" could be another description (my husband's). I loved the show just because I love Katell so much, and I hadn't seen her in many years. I went and spoke to her after the show. I had a chance to interview her in New Haven in 1995, and she remembered me! I'm hoping to get her on my radio show when she next comes to the states for performances. I know that some of the other Ecto folks went to some of Katell's other Fridays in the Living Room series, so I'm interested in hearing what the other shows were like. I'm listening to Jesse Sykes. Thanks for JoAnn Whetsell for recommending this CD recently. Best, Valerie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2007 11:41:03 -0600 From: Patrick Green Subject: Re: Going to SXSW? I always seem to get caught off guard by how quickly this event comes up in the year. After seeing the line up from Meredith below, I'm hoping I can make the 2 hour drive on Saturday. If I can't please someone at least offer a brief review. Though knowing what you missed is no substitute for being there, it will motivate to get in gear quicker next year. psg On 3/6/07 10:57 AM, "meredith" wrote: > Hi, > > Paul Schreiber wrote: >> Anyone else here headed to (or living in) Austin? > > *raises hand* > > http://www.mpressrecords.com/SXSW07/postcard1.html > [ALERT] -- Access Manager: This email is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain information that is privileged, confidential or otherwise protected from disclosure. I think I probably didn't notice you, since I remember when "Asshole" was played thinking of what Margo Timmins said on the train about singing certain Cowboy Junkies songs when there were children present, and thinking "well, I guess there are no kids here anyway." If I had seen an eight-year-old I would have noticed at that point. > I thought it was a somewhat uneven show. She did two of my favorites > at the very beginning: "Hell of a Life" and "Hestia." "Hell of a Life" is one I wish I'd remembered to mention; I loved that one too. I agree with your thoughts; I don't know if it was well rehearsed or not, but I didn't think the backing musicians added much. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2007 14:37:32 -0500 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: new to me: susan enan, gretchen peters Paul Schreiber wrote: > Susan's "Bring on the wonder" is reminding me of someone, but I can't > place it. I'm surprised allofmp3s.com is still alive; they don't pay a penny of royalties to the copyright owners AFAIK. Not a good thing. All MP3-like formats are "very lossy"; the typical 128kbps bitstream throws more than 90% of the data away (depending on the exact encoding process used). iTunes' AAC format is better than the average MP3 encoder in that regard, but after years of putzing around with my own music collection, I still prefer encoding rates above 192 kbps no matter what compression format. My ears tell me that 256k is adequate even for complex classical and jazz, but 128k and below doesn't seem to work well except for voice. In general, the better the original recording and the more complex the signal, the higher bit rate is needed to do it justice. I don't see the requirements being substantially different for rock/pop, it's just that most of it is so poorly recorded to begin with. :-( - -----Original Message----- >From: kerry white >Sent: Mar 6, 2007 2:16 PM >To: "That warm and fuzzy [place]" >Subject: allofmp3s.com?? and itunes?? > > Hi, A friend pointed me at allofmp3s.com in Russia. If you're already comfortable with listening to MP3s, then the songs that you will get from iTunes aren't any worse, and they might be better than some MP3s that you've listened to or purchased. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2007 14:40:57 -0700 From: "Peter Clark" Subject: RE: Holly Cole News Buy it from HMV.ca (Amazon Canada.) It's probably most noticeable if you have a good stereo. There are several tests online which I forget the urls for but as a simple test get an mp3 encoded at 320kbps (or better still a lossless format like FLAC) and the same song in m4a Itunes format. You should be able to hear the difference if you listen to them on a decent sound system. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of kerry white Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2007 2:17 PM To: That warm and fuzzy [place] Subject: allofmp3s.com?? and itunes??
