I think the vocal quality you're describing on Boots is part of what I reacted to... But also something compositional... Rhythmically more repetitive and less varied or something. And somewhat the same thing live... I thought just having guitar and double bass in the oversized Chicago auditorium just didn't crackle n' pop as much as the varied production on the album does. She sort of seemed to fall a little bit more into that strum-strum-strum, here's another girl-strumming in 4/4 time trap, which is so not what she is. I listen to Radio Paradise pretty frequently...and over the years they've gotten a hell of a lot more money from me than the local PBS stations, which I pretty much ignore. The idea that the new fees constitute 125% of their current income is pretty insane. I'd call it mindboggling that the RIAA seems hell-bent on destroying internet radio, but, well, it actually seems quite typical of the bastards. jeff n.p. _The World is Bound by Secret Knots_, Noe Venable (it's been ages since I pulled this out, but all the recent chatter about her inspired me to grab it this morning) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2007 09:43:33 -0500 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: noe On 3/5/07, Timothy Jones-Yelvington wrote: > I thought just having guitar and double bass in the oversized Chicago > auditorium just didn't crackle n' pop as much as the varied production on > the album does. Well, before there was "Boots," there was this, which I'll forgive whatever breathy-throatiness it might have: http://noevenable.com/music/NoeVenable.com--No_Curses_Here--Alcinas_Things_128.mp3 :-) More seriously, one really lovely thing about the set we saw here was the violin accompaniment. I have never, ever been able to listen to the Roches without wanting to claw my eardrums out of my head. One of them (and for YEARS I have been fruitlessly trying to figure out which one) makes the trio sound to me like cats yowling on a fence. I've heard them all solo, and solo they're fine -- but there's just something that happens when they all come together that really shouldn't be allowed. Believe it or not, I was actually hoping to see them at Folk Alliance, figuring that maybe up close I could finally figure out which of the voices causes this phenomenon ... but I couldn't stick around past Susan Werner's opening set, alas. Ah, well. No -- he's helping produce her new record, for one thing. (Though it is true that the last few times Noe has played in NYC, it's just been her and Jacob on violin.) Todd has a ton of stuff going on ... he's certainly still in Ani's band whenever she goes on the road again, and in the meantime he plays with a bunch of people along with doing his own projects. For example he is on Erin McKeown's stunning new record _Sing You Sinners_ (and he was in Erin's band for her CD release shows in NYC last month, which rocked), and he'll be in Rachael Sage's band once again at SXSW. I highly recommend his Todd Sickafoose Group recordings, in particular the latest one _Blood Orange_. Yeah, it's jazz, but he has a much "poppier" (for lack of a better word) sense of melody than a lot of contemporary jazz composers, so it's quite appealing to my as-yet-still-untrained-for-jazz-even-though-I'm-really-trying ears. And he gets incredible musicians to play with him whenever he does a "Blood Orange" show in NYC, too. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Mar 2007 08:46:01 -0800 From: birdie Subject: Re: The Roches haha that's cute. it's like being a kid wishing you could love spinach! birdie meredith wrote: > Hi, > > Country Mouse wrote: > >> Oh! Well, I have only one out of three, so here it is. While I am not really excited, it's a pretty good first effort. She reminds me a little of Sheryl Crow (on her Wildflower album, which is unlike her others); Petracovich, and some others I can't quite identify. My favorite track is Territory, the one that sounds most like Wildflower, and the song Red Letter Day is the one she should submit to the rock stations. I also like Endless Sky and Take Me Home. I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention that she is really cute. To be fair, I will pass this CD on to another Ecto reader who writes me back and asks for it so you can also write up your impressions. More info at http://www.amyraasch.com/. I think she should put some of these tracks on the site as well. After singing backup with her brother, Rufus Wainwright, over the years 2005 & 2006, she decided to begin to explore her life long relationship to music through her own singing and song writing. Described by the New York Times as having the best qualities of both her parents and a voice "clear as a bell", Lucy is a refreshing, pure, alternative to the jive pop culture. She is alarmingly straightforward and unadorned. A young singer just beginning to find her own point of view from a unique perspective.
