Hi, The RIAA strikes again: http://www.kurthanson.com/archive/news/030207/index.shtml "The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has announced its decision on Internet radio royalty rates, rejecting all of the arguments made by Webcasters and instead adopting the "per play" rate proposal put forth by SoundExchange(a digital music fee collection body created by the RIAA). ... "... A "performance" is defined as the streaming of one song to one listener; thus a station that has an average audience of 500 listeners racks up 500 "performances" for each song it plays. ... "...(the) math suggests that the royalty rate decision for the performance alone, not even including composers' royalties! is in the in the ballpark of 100% or more of total revenues." It should go without saying that I think this is utterly, completely, mind-bogglingly stupid. Putting Internet broadcasters out of business is no way to embrace the future. But then, the RIAA is clearly not interested in doing anything but killing the very industry it claims to represent. I wonder if this means that Internet radio is just going to move outside of the US. If I were Pandora, for example, I would certainly be looking into doing just that! A couple of notes on Meredith's post: > Alice Bierhorst went first... she's very into what she's doing and that makes her > performances endearing. Her set was a good way to get things started. Greta > accompanied her on piano throughout, and Noe and Greta both provided harmonies -- > their voices all blended beautifully together. I'd agree with that. The harmonies were pleasant but overall her music was more on the folk side of things than I generally like. From her website, she has like 9 albums, so she's pretty prolific. I can't say much about Greta's set because, though I remember liking it, I was so bowled over by Noe Venable that I forgot everything else. I'd never heard Noe before, either live or recorded; meth's description of "transcendent" fit well. She didn't have any CDs with her, so I went out and bought 3 of them online. Here I've been disappointed: The albums seem largely to share whatever it is I don't care for in Tori Amos' music--probably an attitude more than anything else. Also, I don't like the quality of her voice on the recordings anywhere near as much as what I heard live. Interesting meth's comment about noticing during the show just how strong her voice is; maybe she's moving in a new vocal direction? At any rate, I'm still not intending to miss seeing her live, and it looks like we're going to have two chances this month: at the Living Room on the 15th and at Rockwood Music Hall on the 17th. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Mar 2007 20:21:46 -0600 From: Timothy Jones-Yelvington Subject: re: noe " She didn't have any CDs with her, so I went out and bought 3 of them online. It's odd, because I had the exact opposite reaction when I saw her open for Ani -- I sort of thought there wasn't enough variation in her material and two-three tracks were about all I needed to hear. Then I bought "The World is Bound by Secret Knots," and was completely bowled over by its fantastic-ness and intensity and the Kate-quality production. I have one other of her albums, "Boots," which has the same flatness that I experienced in the live set I saw. Maybe it does have something to do with her artistic progression. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2007 21:44:17 -0500 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: Katell On 3/4/07, valrichardson@igc.org wrote: > Speaking of which, I took my daughter to see Katell Keineg this past Friday at The > Living Room. I was at that show; another one I had intended to write up but haven't had time to. (I was sitting with a woman friend, table-less, on the left-hand wall facing the stage, about half way back, in case you were sitting anywhere near us--I don't know if I'd recognize you, Valerie!) Last time I saw Katell Keineg was in September of 1998, and I remember concluding that I wasn't a big fan. Since then I've heard Natalie Merchant's "Gulf of Araby" duet with Susan McKeown and thought I needed to go back for another listen. This time I had a mixed reaction; some things I thought were sublime, some didn't grab me, and for a few I had to hold back a bwa-ha-ha-ha reaction. Really: "I want you/but I don't want your monkey..." I know it's supposed to be metaphoric and all, but it's hard to maintain belief in the anguish of the narrator when the image is so ridiculous. There was also one that went "Assholes of the world, won't you learn to love a woman..." which presumably was calling on the assholes to reform themselves but which kept leading me to the question, "Why do you want to be loved by an asshole anyway?" On the other hand, there was an amazing song she sang in Spanish by a Chilean, Victor Jara: "Te recuerdo, Amanda." (I don't know how it was for people who don't understand Spanish, but I found it very moving. It also echoes a famous French poem, "Barbara" by Jacques Prevert.) There's a video on YouTube of Jara singing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRmre8ggkcY (lyrics in Spanish and English here: http://thue.stanford.edu/jacquie/songs/amanda.html ) Katell finished her set with "Franklin," and then played "The Gulf of Araby" as an encore. She had someone accompanying her on piano and keyboards a good part of the time, but I don't know who it was. The house was packed. Opening for Katell was Ann Scott from Dublin, who looks like a cuter, slightly perky Jorja Fox (the one from CSI) and whose music was pretty tedious. She played acoustic during her set and was accompanied halfway through by a cellist whose name I now forget. During Katell's set Ann did a little backing electric guitar (and the cellist joined for one or two songs as well). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2007 22:27:46 -0500 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: "Keys Please" with Kristin Hoffmann and NLX Caffe Vivaldi is a little bohemian place in the Village whose owner, Ishrat Ansari, is very devoted to the music he puts on and to his musicians. The place seems held together by a shoestring, and on a slow night it can be pretty empty. Sometimes, however, the place can get so packed you can hardly move. I discovered Caffe Vivaldi a few years ago after having seen Kristin Hoffmann at Arlene Grocery on Dan Stark's recommendation; she was doing a residency there. Since then she is one of Ishrat's favorite musicians, and she draws pretty well too. Caffe Vivaldi has also hosted Natasha Alexandra ("NLX") numerous times. Last Sunday night Kristin and Natasha shared a bill under the name "Keys Please"--both play piano and other keyboards--and they packed the place. They had a setup with a Macintosh and all kinds of loops and effects; often one would do backing vocals or effects (or vocals-with-effects) on the other one's song. Both of them are pretty young. Kristin is the less cynical of the two; NLX likes to put on a hard-boiled front. I find much more to like in Kristin's music than I did before; her vocals are really good and the effects really spice things up. There's a video "ad" on YouTube for the Keys Please tour that gets across pretty well what it was like in less than 2 minutes. (The high-pitched, clear voice is Kristin; the more edgy one is Natasha.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHISHIMUhe8 Probably Kristin Hoffmann's two strongest songs are "Mary" and "Falling," which you can hear here: http://www.kristinhoffmann.com/music.html http://www.myspace.com/kristinhoffmannmusic Natasha Alexandra's "Code Red" is what plays when you reach her homepage: http://www.nlxmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/natashaalexandra Seems I left some of their dates off my other list: Natasha Alexandra Rockwood Music Hall, March 5 Kristin Hoffmann Living Room, March 9 Kristin Hoffmann The Golden Apple Coffeehouse, Mt. "Secret Knots" is 2003, and "Boots" is 2002, so if there's a progression it must be complicated. I know that "Luck, luck," which I heard live, is also on "Boots"--but the version on the album would never have made me sit up and take notice the way the live performance did. Live her voice sounded very forceful, clear, and pure. The songs on "Boots" have that flat, breathy back-of-the-throat voice that doesn't do much for me. Guess that's probably why I can't get into Kristin Hersh either.
