I got both tapes from the Tape Project lo-o-ng ago. Huh? It's there. http://rhodeshows.com/live/HappyRhodesLiveSetList_UMA_03-21-92.html The lineup, on the Notes and Photos page was: Happy Rhodes - Vocals and Guitar Kelly Bird - Backing vocals Kevin Bartlett - Electric guitars & interesting electronic box full of goodies Martha Waterman - Keyboards, backing vocals Mark Foster - Drums Ray Jung - Bass I have the rest of the show if you want it. I can't believe I never noticed that doofy mistake. It's fixed now. Btw, I'm in contact with Happy several times a week and when there are things to announce, and there will be things to announce when the time comes, I'll post. Patience will be rewarded. V xenussister@yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2007 07:38:50 -0600 From: Wretchawry Subject: Pandora Wow, I didn't know other people could listen to "my" stations! There's a "Share it" link but I never had anyone to share it with so I ignored it then forgot about it. I don't go there too awfully often. There's way enough music on MySpace for me to have to look for it at Pandora. I mainly care that some people have discovered Happy there, which is a wonderful thing. I just found out that there's a page about Happy and you can sample songs instead of waiting for them to cycle around. Very cool. Not all songs have samples, and for some reason The Keep isn't listed on her page, even though I know it's on Pandora. The other Happy albums they have are MWABT, BTC and Warpaint. Happy's page: http://www.pandora.com/music/artist/fefa2e535caa4efe Wanna know something funny Kerry? I have no memory of why I called that station "Enon." It kinda freaks me out. But yeah, I like the Enon station too. It just played the song "The Dreaming"! The main problem I have with Pandora are that there aren't enough choices for choosing what you think. For instance, right now Lily Allen is playing. I like the song but I don't now want a whole slew of bright, poppy, even more mainstream songs that will take me ages to get rid of popping up. I gave it thumbs up anyway (I've liked her since last summer). Also, it'll play songs I don't care for by artists I like. I won't want that song but I want more songs from the artist to show up, but if I thumb down it, it's unlikely the artist will show up again. It just played "Why Should I Love You?" by Kate, which is one of the very few Kate songs I'm not that crazy about, but I was afraid to thumb it down lest Kate herself never show up again. Oh and also, you can only skip so many songs, so after a while, you can't skip and thumbs down don't get rid of the song that's playing, which means you have to sit through a buncha crap (or at least, songs I'm not interested in). God I hate the RIAA. It's interesting how they classify songs. Almost all the songs are classified with "Features". It's how they pair up songs. Here's what they say about "Hold Me": Features Of This Song basic rock song structures electronica influences mild rhythmic syncopation heavy use of vocal harmonies meandering melodic phrasing paired vocal harmony groove based composition mixed minor & major key tonality use of the wah wah pedal an emotional female lead vocal performance a smooth female lead vocal prominent percussion prominent synth drums Here's The Keep's "Temporary and Eternal": Features Of This Song mellow rock instrumentation electronica influences new age influences folk influences an overall meditative sound extensive vamping chromatic harmonic structure minor key tonality a smooth female lead vocal acoustic rhythm guitars (Love that "extensive vamping"! Happy gets that a lot for some reason) "Flash Me Up" Features Of This Song mellow rock instrumentation folk influences acoustic sonority call and answer vocal harmony (Antiphony) meandering melodic phrasing a vocal-centric aesthetic minor key tonality a good dose of acoustic guitar pickin' acoustic rhythm guitars vocal harmonies (geetar pickin'!!) "The Chariot" Features Of This Song synth rock arranging electronica influences new age influences folk influences jazz influences a subtle use of vocal counterpoint a subtle use of vocal harmony mild rhythmic syncopation interweaving vocal harmony minor key tonality prominent percussion triple note feel Interesting. I just ordered their recommended CDs by Blue Stone, Sleepthief, Niyaz, Chungking, Brightblack Morning Light, and Blue Tofu. Amy, I could spend weeks at your Web site. I hadn't visited it in quite awhile, but it's really looking great! I, too, would like to hear more from KinZaZa -- their debut album was beautiful and stayed in my CD player for a long time. Has anyone heard if they'll be doing a second album? Another voice I've been enjoying lately is Lisbeth Scott. She's best known for her work on the Passion of the Christ soundtrack, but I found her on The Paul Schwartz Project's "Earthbound" CD. Tara MacLean sings one track on that album, too. Other artists I've been listening to lately: Era, Nitin Sawhney, Martin Tillman, Tom Vedvik, Mysteria, Synasthesia, West Indian Girl, My Morning Jacket, Calexico, and Bent's new CD, "Intercept." A friend recently introduced me to a little surprise called McLemore Avenue by Booker T & the MGs. It's an instrumental version of the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album -- with a strange flashback feel to it! Noe? Venable? Hello?? Well, I don't know what anyone else's excuse is, but I have a valid one, honest!! :} After the show I stayed in NYC and then early the next morning I flew down to Memphis for Folk Alliance. This week has been all about recovering from that, and catching up on work. Lame, but true. :} So yeah, Noe played at Caffe Vivaldi, a tiny spot in the West Village that serves homemade pasta dishes and has an out-of-tune baby grand in the corner and a dinky little DIY P.A. She shared the evening with Greta Gertler and Alice Bierhorst, and it was a great 2 hours of music. Alice Bierhorst went first. Like Noe she's originally from the Bay Area, and they know each other from there. I'd heard of her playing drums with other people, but hadn't seen her do her own stuff until a few weeks ago when woj and I went to see Greta in Southington, CT and she was there too. I think she's overall a better drummer/percussionist than singer or songwriter, but she's very into what she's doing and that makes her performances endearing. Her set was a good way to get things started. Greta accompanied her on piano throughout, and Noe and Greta both provided harmonies -- their voices all blended beautifully together. Greta went next, accompanied by Pete Galub on guitar (from the Extroverts), and Alice jumped in on percussion now and then. Noe's violinist, Jacob Lawson also played on a couple songs. She did mainly new material from her soon-to-be-released album, which I'm very much looking forward to -- but then she ended with "Adore", which I, well, adore, so that made me very happy. :) Greta played the piano, which worked okay once the guitar got tuned out to match the piano rather than the notes it was really supposed to be. :} Noe and Jacob ended the show. Noe was in somewhat of a state, having flown back to NYC on the redeye the previous night with not a moment's rest since ... but she managed to play a transcendent set anyway. I must admit I'm going somewhat nuts in anticipation of her new album -- it's inching ever closer to completion, so hopefully it won't be much longer. Her new material is even more intensely atmospheric than what she's done before, and I noticed in this show particularly just how strong her voice really is. It has that fragile little-girl sound on the surface, but in reality it's a finely honed instrument that keeps just getting better and better as time goes on. Noe has long been on our "must not miss" list, but she really needs to be on that list for more people. Hopefully with a new album she'll get out there more ... her performances are always amazing. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #52 **************************
