It's a collaborative album where lots of hip youngsters like Le Tigre, Peaches, Cat Power and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons are given free reign to sort of recompose Ono's back catalog as they desire.... I was afraid it would sound scattered and incoherent like many tribute albums tend to, or drown out Ono's own creativity... But it's the exact opposite on both counts. It pulls together as an album and really highlights Ono's vocals and compositions, making them really immediate and relevant. I really love it and can't stop listening. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 13:11:59 -0500 From: Rodney Somerstein Subject: Lily Allen I don't know if she has been discussed here before, but I just recently discovered the music of Lily Allen. She is probably more pop than ecto. But I have to say, that she is one of the most refreshing new voices in music that I've come across in awhile. Her debut album, Smile, is an interesting mix of ska/reggae and pop from a musical standpoint. The lyrics are rather straightforward rather than poetic. And, they are extremely cynical and sarcastic. This album was released this year in the US, but came out last summer in the UK. I first heard of Lily Allen when she appeared a couple of weeks ago on Saturday Night Live. Her music is wonderfully happy and upbeat, even when she is berating a former lover or talking about someone being mugged on the streets of London. To me, it is really interesting how she manages to successfully skirt the line of "serious" music and novelty songs. I don't usually fall in love with a mainstream artist. Their have been exceptions which I've usually found (through this list and elsewhere) before they become popular, such as Sinead O'Connor, Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. With only one album to her name, it's way too early to say whether she has any staying power. I wouldn't claim that she reaches the same levels that those artists have, but I'm hopeful. If she can manage to keep her voice as she matures, there is at least one more pop artist that I'll follow. I'm curious what others think of her music. Do you love her? Hate her? Think of her, when you do, with pretty much complete indifference? - -- Rodney Somerstein Always remember that you are unique... rodneys@io.com just like everyone else. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 10:47:01 -0800 From: "Sue Trowbridge" Subject: Re: Lily Allen On 2/26/07, Rodney Somerstein wrote: > I'm curious what others think of her music. I really, really like what I've heard by Lily Allen -- I first heard her on NPR's "All Songs Considered" podcast several months ago, and she's been getting some radio airplay on our local alterna-rock station. Her music is very fresh & fun. She's the guest DJ on "All Songs Considered" this week: http://www.npr.org/programs/asc/ I am not a big music-video fan but hers are entertaining and worth seeking out on YouTube. - --Sue T. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2007 00:22:16 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Re: Lily Allen On Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 01:11:59PM -0500, Rodney Somerstein wrote: > I don't know if she has been discussed here before, but I just > recently discovered the music of Lily Allen. I also found Lily on SNL, and consider her a guilty pleasure :-) The CD is really quite fun, and I love the ska/reggae beats. - -j ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2007 00:27:46 -0600 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: Lily Allen Hi, I heard her on NPR and she says she doesn't write her lyrics until she is in the studio writing and recording the music. To those who haven't heard: the songs are all up and poppy including the one that says: (not a quote) 'Now that we have broken up I think I will go through all your friends!' With either specific sexual terms or just innuendo about 'going through'. bye, me KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! At any rate, I am now making one from 3/21/92 at the Harrison Auditorium Philly. It was introduced by a DJ who says: "This is Happy's first concert in Philly!" I was at the '96 but this one is before my time and has a very good range of tones and clarity. Vickie: I was curious about the band's line-up and went to the live shows page and this 3/21/92 was not listed. The 3/18/92 was there, but, not this. I got both tapes from the Tape Project lo-o-ng ago. Same deal as before: CDr of something and postage sent my way and CDr and postage out from me. Bye, me 1) Suicidal Twin Makes Mistake!
