I really like her first solo album, the second one didn't make as much of an ipact on me but I've already highlighted her showcase (I'm at Folk Alliance too). I saw Issa in the hallway a few times myself--interesting haircut. I heard some great material from Susan Werner's new Gospel Truth album this evening-- imagine a Gospel album from an agnostic's point of view. Jesse Sykes' albums share a similar aesthetic, but each (there are 3) has a different feel. Like, Love, Lust has a dark intensity (not melancholic, more shadowy). Erin McKeown - Sing You Sinners I love love LOVE this album. Erin McKeown takes obscure songs from the 30's through 50s and completely makes them her own. It's a rollicking good time. Lucinda Williams - West Country-folk, more laidback than her last 2 albums, but with a smoldering intensity, like the most ferocious purr you've ever heard. Definitely her best since Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, though it's not much like that album in style. Rickie Lee Jones The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard A different sound for her, more driving, like dark 70s rock maybe? I find it riveting, aurally and lyrically. Definitely worth listening to, no matter your stand on religion. Patty Griffin - Children Running Through I've read great reviews; everyone seems to love the great variety of styles. But for me it's just too much: gospel, driving rock, folk, country, and more, all thrown together without transitions to smooth the aural passage. Her last couple of albums were uneven, but had some really brilliant songs. The new one only has two songs I really like: "Heavenly Day" and "Up to the Mountains (MLK Song)" and a smattering of others that I like okay. I keep hoping that repeat listens will warm me up to the album, but so far I have to call this one a big disappointment. So risky and vital and artful and all of that business. Part of the issue is that the critics are heaping crazy hyperbolic on every one of these albums... Which in one way is great, because each of these artists deserves that level of respect... But in another way, it's problematic, because it's been creating almost unreachable expectations. It reminds me of this last time Winter when I felt ridiculously guilty for not loving the much-hyped new projects from Cat Power, Beth Orton and Neko Case. Maybe I need to stop reading reviews so compulsively... The critics are loving the Jesse Sykes, but I think I'm definitely missing the melancholy from her last album, which was absolutely haunting... The same thing the critics love (the up-tempo, driving stuff) is the same thing that I think is making this one harder to get into for me. Like I just can't quite get beneath the surface of the thing... It's too regulated or something. I miss my moody ambient reverb. My stepdad is famous within his family for having said as a child at the dinner table that something was "delicious, but he didn't like it." That's a little bit how I feel about Patty Griffin... It's quite lovely, and I can see how it's a nearly flawless recording, and probably the first time where all of the different versions of Patty have been able to coexist peacefully... But it's almost too adult or too professional for me... Nothing is keeping me coming back... I'm afraid I'll always miss the rawness and immediacy of "Living with Ghosts." I'm still getting through my first listen of the Lucinda Williams. After the straight-ahead cookie-cutter predictability of the production on the second track, I was worried, but the rest is making a much better impression. I agree, the Erin McK is awesome. I hate the "standards" album phenomenon, but Erin of course makes it her own because it is and always has been who and what she is at a very deep level. The Kristin Hersh hasn't sucked me in yet, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't. I need some more time with it before issuing a "final" opinion. ~~Has anyone else read about Joni Mitchell's upcoming projects? If I can find it, I'll forward this fantastic article I read. ~tim On 2/24/07 3:53 PM, "JoAnn Whetsell" wrote: > What I'm listening to lately: > Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter - Like, Love, Lust & The Open Halls of the > Soul > New folk-rock from this husky-voiced singer and band. You wanna hear an odd Mare story? Last year I was at my local synagogue on a random saturday morning, and lo and behold, at the reception ('kiddush') following the service, there was Mare with her (???) husband. Apparently they were checking out synagogues (something Jews sometimes do when they are looking for one to join)... so, since I am almost certain that Mare is not Jewish herself, her (???) husband must be... Anyways it was pretty odd. And no, she didn't sing a note... But anyone who has ever seen St Elmo's Fire knows that she can sing. Her new album is a Jewish/Country/Folk/Bluegrass albums with lots of hebrew songs and gospel/jewish songs--don't know if she was jewish originally but have the feeling she may have converted--she had a Jewish Convert Jig in her set. In another odd vein, Susan Werner's new album, The Gospel Truth, due out next week is an excellent agnostic gospel album. She's played a number of songs off of it at various showcases, and it sounds pretty promising. Look for her on tour with Trina Hamlin joining her soon.
