Going back to the thread a couple months ago about digitizing vinyl, you can do the same thing to cassettes without having to get any special equipment. So long as your sound card has stereo RCA inputs, all you need is a piece of software. Just hook your sound system's cassette deck up to the computer and capture the sound that way. woj has done this with a bunch of cassettes so far, and they've all come out great. The software should allow you to get rid of at least the worst of the hiss and tweak levels and the like. It's a time commitment, but a worthwhile one if you want to preserve your old tapes. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 13:09:01 -0600 From: "Kim Justice" Subject: Re: Cassette owners Oooh! A CD-R of a cassette of a vinyl LP! That's not what Kerry is talking about, I don't think. There are still some old albums that have yet to be released on CD, so the 25-year-old cassette version (not taped from an LP, but bought on cassette) might be all one has. Or, as in woj's and my case, master tapes of concerts recorded many years ago (up to and including Happy's shows from the winter/spring of 1992, Tori's first American solo tour, etc.). These are things that definitely need to be preserved. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 23:46:13 -0600 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: re: Cassette Owners Hi, Also, the 'factory' tapes of released albums come coded with Dolby B which loses a lot of the tape hiss.
