I saw Eamon a couple of weeks ago at house concert, and he mentioned recording this with Susan for TG4 (which is Irish language). As for 2007, hands down, the album I'm most looking forward to is Erin McKeown's Sing You Sinners. I've been enjoying it through my Yahoo music subscription, and I'm ordering a hard copy as soon as it's available in the US (supposedly January). Great sound clips on her website too, so go listen if you haven't already. Now my wrap-up on 2006. I got a TON of music this year, most of which I haven't gotten a chance to really listen to. Here's the noteworthy (in no particular order). And before I forget.... HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!! JoAnn FAVORITE ARTISTS Sufjan Stevens and KT Tunstall FAVORITE ALBUMS Eye to the Telescope - KT Tunstall Yes, Virginia... - The Dresden Dolls Supernature - Goldfrapp Limon y sal - Julieta Venegas (upbeat alt/pop/rock by a Mexican singer-songwriter) WELCOME ADDITIONS (Great new music by artists I've been enjoying for years) Ani DiFranco - Reprieve The Be Good Tanyas - Hello Love Berroguetto - 10.0 (possibly the best album to date by this Galician band) Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers Charlotte Martin - Stromata (her best and most individual album yet) Edie Carey - Another Kind of Fire Emm Gryner - The Summer of High Hopes Hem - No Word From Tom and Funnel Cloud The High Violets - To Where You Are Indigo Girls - Despite Our Differences (not up there with their best work, but better than their most recent stuff) Jonatha Brooke - Live in NY CD/DVD (Haven't watched the DVD yet, but I really enjoy the CD, more than I thought I would since the track list didn't excite me that much) Juana Molina - Son Loreena McKennitt - An Ancient Muse (it's great to have her back. this album is beautiful, more ryhthmic than before) Natacha Atlas - Mish Maoul Susan McKeown - Blackthorn: Irish Love Songs (I've never been a big fan of Susan's traditional work, but I really like this one) Susana Baca - Travesias Vienna Teng - Dreaming Through the Noise Varttina - Miero The Wailin' Jennys - Firecracker Yungchen Lhamo - Ama BEST COMEBACKS: Shawn Colvin - These Four Walls Catie Curtis - Long Night Moon Heather Duby - Heather Duby Heather Nova - Redbird (not released in 2006, but I just got it this year. If you liked Oyster but were disappointed by her subsequent work, pick this up.) Joan Osborne - Pretty Little Stranger (best album she's made in years) Shannon McNally - North American Ghost Music & Southside Sessions [with Charlie Sexton] (I liked her debut, Jukebox Sparrows, but then kind of lost track of her. Her live album and studio album with Charlie Sexton (mostly his songs) are both excellent.) Alice Peacock - Who I Am (I loved "Alabama Boy," the opening track on her self-titled album a few years back, but wasn't that impressed with the album overall. Who I Am speaks far better to her talent.) BEST NEW (TO ME) ARTISTS Ane Brun - A Temporary Dive (uncluttered pop on her first English language album) Azam Ali - Elysium for the Brave (simply wonderful) Bird York - Wicked Little High (I'd been aware of her for years, but this is the first album I've listened to) Camille - Le fil (one of the most inventive and individual artists I've heard in years) Don Peris (of the Innocence Mission) - Go Where the Morning Shineth (lovely mostly instrumental album) Halou - Wholeness & Separation (I've liked their sound before, but this is the first full album I really got into) Jose Gonzalez - Veneer (this Swedish singer-songwriter of Argentianian heritage writes short, sweet voice-and-guitar songs) Judith Owen - Here (I've loved her voice for years and her jazz piano, but her albums always seemed hot and cold. _Here_ is the first one I've loved all the way through.) Karine Polwart - Scribbled in Chalk (great contemporary folk by a Scottish artist) R/R Coseboom (Halou side project) - Beneath Trembling Lanterns (I love this, even more than their work as Halou) BEST HOLIDAY ALBUMS Aimee Mann - One More Drifter in the Snow Maire (Moya) Brennan - An Irish Christmas Sufjan Stevens - Songs for Christmas - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get FREE Web site and company branded e-mail from Microsoft Office Live ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2007 01:11:30 -0500 From: "Michael Quinn" Subject: : Best of 2006 lists My Favs of 2006 1.
