What's your complaint? I have several :), but my two main ones are that a.) cramming three shows into one night means that any given show has to be cut short, and b.) the $12/person minimum is a crime against humanity. (I wouldn't mind it so much if the food was worth what they overcharge for it, and the $7 beer not flat.) Also, sometimes the stage lighting is abyssmal. When we saw Feist there early this year, I had to use the verb "saw" in the general sense, because we actually didn't *see* her at all. The stage was lit only intermittently by dark blue light that served no purpose whatsoever. She even commented on how she couldn't see what she was doing, to no avail. I should say, though, that from a performer's standpoint Joe's isn't a bad place to play at all. They do make you sound check many, many hours before you go on, but the sound guys there are all a professional lot and the sound system is a good one, and the last couple times I've been involved in shows there the stage managers have been wonderful. I've been to Joe's more times than I can count now ... it's pretty much the only venue left in that part of town, so all the good shows end up there these days. I just wish a place would open up that would bring the same good shows without having to break the bank each time. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2006 14:32:16 +0100 From: Yngve Hauge Subject: A little gift to you Hi to you all and greetings! The $12/person food minimum isn't the half of it--if you want to have anything serious to eat, you'll wind up spending $18 on a hamburger and half that again on a drink. Plus, for any show that actually attracts a significant audience, if you don't get dinner reservations, you'll wind up standing through the show at a very crowded bar. I'd rather pay more for tickets and less for all that nonsense. I've skipped quite a few shows there because I know it can easily add up to a $100 night, especially if I'm treating my wife. The same artists will often play at The Living Room for a $5-10 cover plus a $6 drink minimum. Or at the Mercury Lounge for a $15 cover, but where they don't force-feed you unwanted drinks. Sure these places cram in a different act every hour but at least they're fair about it. The other thing that Joe's is known for is scheduling two shows from the same artist in a single evening. They bank on the fact that the real fans will stay for both sets and spend twice as much. Those who just pay the already-steep price for one show get only a short night's worth of entertainment and miss half the songs unless the artist duplicates the set list, which is rare. The Bottom Line was famous for this too, which is why I wasn't sorry to see it die. It's just a bad bang for the buck. I only go if it's an artist I really want to see, and then only if I'm relatively sure she won't be back soon at a more honest venue. You can >bet I'll be at at least one, probably both of these. :) I second this recommendation. I've been thoroughly enjoying this release. It's worthy buying just for "Rhode Island Is Known For You", but the whole thing is a lot of fun and a great listen. The review in the All Music Guide is about as big a rave as I have ever seen, and actually captures the spirit of the album quite well. (See below) We've got her coming to New Mexico in February. I think she will be a quartet in NYC, but we'll just have a duo. Since we are the only date between Nashville and Los Angeles, I guess it wasn't worth bringing the full band. Should be a really fun show though. neal np: Mosh of the Penguins :) All Music Guide review by by Jo-Ann Greene With the rise of the Hollywood extravaganza and the ensuing decline of vaudeville, American music lost much of its kick and joie de vivre. However, with her album Sing You Sinners, Erin McKeown sets forth to single-handedly resurrect the wayward cast-offs of Americana and return them to center stage, but with a sparkle and humor that is a poignant reminder of an age long gone.Today "Get Happy" is probably the best known song on the set, famously delivered on screen by Judy Garland, but McKeown and her backing trio, further buttressed by a horn section, turn the song inside out, threading it through myriad musical styles, from its champagne piano intro, across the shifting sands of jazz, into R&B and rock'n'roll, and out into '60s surf. In just over three minutes, "Happy" gleefully dances its way through three decades of music styles."Paper Moon" is an equal classic, but now shines over the Caribbean in its new reggae-fied calypso gladrags. And of course, jazz fans will instantly recognize Fats Waller's "If You a Viper", but McKeown's vampish version is built around not piano, but her banjo and a walking bass line. Anita O'Day's "Thanks for the Boogie Ride" rode off in big band style, in contrast, McKeown drives it straight into rock-a-billy. Cole Porter's elegant "Just One of Those Things" now ebbs and flows between moody jazz, darkly ambient Bristol Sound (a la Massive Attack), and brooding surf. McKeown, herself, contributes one song to the set, "Melody" an exuberant, ragtime rave-up dedicated to the glories of melody itself. And it's melodies that McKeown loves, so she never disrepects them, showcasing each one's enduring qualities, whilst simultaneously creating stunning new musical backdrops for them. Bar "Melody," the songs all date between 1930 and 1955, while the arrangements travel even further afield, from the '20s into the '60s, capturing virtually the entire range of popular musical styles along the way. It's a toss up whether McKeown had more fun with the arrangements or her vocal performances, but the entire set is imbued with a sparkle and a whimsical sense of humor that is absolutely infectious. In all the best ways, McKeown makes every one of these songs her own, most notably "Rhode Island Is Famous for You", so much so, that some fans mistakenly believe McKeown wrote the 1948 number. You'll never think of a cover song in the same way again, and to have created an entire set of such inspired versions is sheer genius indeed. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #342 ***************************
