OK, here's an ad hoc "best of 2006" list, based mostly on the stuff that I've most enjoyed this year. Aloe Blacc: Shine Through Anjani: Blue Alert Azam Ali: Elysium for the Brave Clint Mansell: The Fountain (Soundtrack) Derek Trucks Band: Songlines Dolly Rocker: Funny Lullabies George Strait: It Just Comes Natural The Hold Steady: Boys and Girls in America Kaki King: ...Until We Felt Red Lisa Gerrard: The Silver Tree Matisyahu: Youth Ornette Coleman: Sound Grammar Vienna Teng: Dreaming Through the Noise ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2006 10:23:16 -0600 From: Timothy Jones-Yelvington Subject: Chantal Kreviazuk's "Ghost Stories" - Kate Havenevik's "Melankton" I stopped paying attention to Chantal Kreviazuk a while ago, so I didn't even know she had a new album this year until someone posted it in a community I'm in. On first listen, it's significantly more interesting than her last album, "What if it all Something," which sounded completely prefabricated for romantic comedy soundtrack placement. I've always had mixed feelings about Chantal. Her lyrics can be really precious -- too many songs about dying children, and even though she has serious chops, she's always seemed to pop-produced and too packaged for a mainstream popularity that's never materialized for her. So even though this recording seems a lot better, it's still a little glossy for my tastes. I'm not sure if I care enough to keep listening. Does anyone have any thoughts? Also, I finally got my hands on Kate Havnevik's "Melankton," which is really, really good. She sounds exactly like a lot of other people who are already recording, ie Imogen Heap and Dido, but I feel like she does their thing as well or better than they do. A very agreeable listen, and the album is very well-sequenced to get twistier and more intense and more unpredictable as it goes. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2006 12:59:08 -0600 From: Doug Subject: Re: Best of 2006 lists? I'd like to submit a vote for The First Noel, as sung by Sarah McLachlan. Wow. Simply WOW. - --Doug ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #339 ***************************
