How do you all, who probably buy a lot more music than I do, keep track? Honestly, whenever I buy a new or current release, I'm kind of always thinking in "best of" terms, and keeping a mental list and rankings. Which is kind of a screwed up way to listen to music, but there you have it. I used to do the same thing with films. I actually keep a list on Excel with the basics, including date of purchase. I agree, also with woj, I buy a lot of older stuff as I become "exposed." I still rely heavily on Ecto as a purchasing guide. Seems there isn't as much good stuff of late, but those are the breaks, plenty of older stuff out there, too. I posted my top 10 list elsewhere. I'll just repost the same list here, although there are some bits (say, explaining who Emm Gryner is) that are redundant on ecto. Anyway: 10) Tanya Donelly, This Hungry Life I've been a fan of pretty much everything Tanya Donelly has ever done, with the possible exception of her uneven first solo album. This album was recorded mostly live with an audience, but isn't really meant as a live album. There's a lovely cover of the George Harrison tune "Long, Long, Long from the White Album. 9) Vienna Teng, Dreaming Through the Noise Not as immediately captivating as her previous two albums, but still a fine effort that rewards repeated listening. Highlighted by "Pontchatrain," a slow, sad dirge. 8) Beth Orton, Comfort of Strangers I only have one of Orton's previous albums, so I can't compare it to them, though I know it's something of a departure. More of a folk rock feel. The album as a whole doesn't seem to stick in my mind, but the songs themselves are mostly lovely. 7) Art Brut, Bang Bang Rock & Roll Energetic, hook-laden punk-ish rock with an English-accented singer singing gleefully about how he can't sing, how he's in a band, and how he saw his brand new girlfriend naked - twice! Okay, that sounds bizarre, but listen to the songs and they're impossible not to love. 6) Amy Millan, Honey From the Tombs The solo debut from one of the two lead singers of the Montreal-based band Stars. Quite a departure - gorgeous, melancholy bluegrass-tinged singer-songwriter stuff. The song "Skinny Boy" is one of my favorite songs of the year. Hell, the last few years. 5) Cat Power, The Greatest Mostly notable for the first and last tracks. It gets a bit slow in the middle, but it's mostly good stuff, and those two tracks are good enough to carry the whole thing. 4) Belle & Sebastian, The Life Pursuit There are a couple of songs on here that are practically funky, which is a little weird from B&S, but it totally works."Sukie in the Graveyard" is particularly infectious. 3) Emm Gryner, The Summer of High Hopes One of my favorite musicians who most people have never even heard of (though I've seen at least two other 3WA folks mention her as a favorite) with her first album of original material in three or four years. The album's not necessarily anything new for her, but it plays to all her strengths - great lyrics, great pop hooks, and a couple of lovely ballads thrown in for good measure. The album's notable for the song "Almighty Love," which Bono recently named one of the songs he most wishes he'd written himself. 2) Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat Another solo debut that departs quite a bit from the singer's band work (in this case, with Rilo Kiley). Agnostic gospel songs with beautiful female harmonizing and an old-timey country feel. Could've easily been the album of the year for me, but... 1) Neko Case, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood I love Neko Case's previous stuff, but this is a sonic leap forward. Gorgeous and haunting and mysterious and oddly infectious. The songs play out almost like fairy tales from the days before they were Disney-fied and sucked clean of their menace and mystery. The opening track, "Margaret vs. Pauline," especially sticks with me. I couldn't tell you what it's actually about, but it still manages to be haunting and eerie. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #336 ***************************
