The music I listen to has always been good, it's just fallen out of favour". I can quite happily listen to the first handful of albums by the Electric Light Orchestra with a joy that isn't faintly ironic, and the same goes for Elton John, up until about "Rock of the Westies". I'm not in the least bit ashamed (as a prog fan, you get over this sort of thing) and have never felt the need to defend the presence of these artists in my collection as youthful foible or any loophole that the term "guilty pleasure" can offer. Until now. My name is Adam and my guilty pleasure is....John Denver. I can say this because I've just bought myself one of the many anthologies of his that are floating around and I like it, dammit. I used to babysit for a couple who had his original "Greatest Hits" as well as "Poems Prayers and Promises" and, while waiting for them to come back, I'd listen to these albums and found that I really, really liked them. I loved "Sunshine" when it came out, and may even have the single somewhere. Listening to this anthology (I bought "Poems.." on CD a few weeks ago)just brought it all back and reminded me of what a great voice he had, and what a knack for harmony he possessed. His version of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" actually has some lovely, soaring moments that subsequent cover versions smoothed over and...and...and...it's just really, really nice. I even like "Fly Away" his duet with Olivia Newton John (although i still don't warm to the hokiness of "THank God I'm a Country Boy"). Well, that's my guilty pleasure. I'm just postponing even considering putting together a "Best of 2006" list, due to the scarcity of music that's moved me in any way and the fact that I've only just received the new Peter Hammill, and that I'm still hoping something will come along and redeem what's turned out to be the Year of the Underwhelm for me. But that's another story... adam k. "I'm the Bishop of Southwark. It's what I do". ---- from my favourite news story of the week, said Bish being found drunk in the back of somebody else's parked (and illegally entered) Mercedes and throwing toys out of the window. In, of all places, Crucifix Street. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 13:08:52 +0000 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: guilty pleasures I've always been a bit snooty about these kind of things, as I steadfastly maintain "I have no guilty pleasures. I thought you guys might all be interested in these live shows that I came across. NPR's not familiar to me, being as I'm not in the US, but I figured others might be unaware, too. I also have a favour to ask -- I wanted to burn these to CD, but they're too big/too long. Can anyone out there who is more technically savvy than I maybe cut the Neko and Cat concerts into two smaller MP3s, so that one would fit on each CD, and then upload them via sendspace or something? It's a lot to ask, I know ... !!! Neko Case and Martha Wainwright: *http://tinyurl.com/zpp26* Cat Power: *http://tinyurl.com/yg3qvb* Also: there's a few other live shows (Regina Spektor among them) but no MP3s to download, alas. You can play them in Windows Media, but I don't think you can save or burn to CD. I don't suppose anyone knows a way to do that? I've tried right-clicking and "save file target as" but it comes up and says it can't be done. Thanks, Lucinda the luddite ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 10:53:32 -0600 From: Joshua Yu Burnett Subject: Re: NPR -- Live concerts online. Just FYI, these concerts are recorded in conjunction with All Songs Considered, a web-based music show available via streaming audio or podcast. I highly recommend the show - it's one of the best music podcasts out there in my opinion. Not all (or even most) of the music it plays is necessarily ecto fare, but it always has something interesting. And a number of artists mentioned on ecto did show up on its recent best of 2006 show - Cat Power, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Regina Spektor, and Joanna Newsom were all among the top 10. The show's URL is http://www.npr.org/programs/asc/ Speaking of which, what other music podcasts would y'all in ecto-land recommend? I'm already subscribed to more than I can really keep up with, but I'm always happy to add more... Some of the others I listen to: CBC Radio 3 Podcast - independent Canadian music - one of my favorites. The music selection is eclectic enough that I never like everything that's played, but there's always something good. Irish and Celtic Music Podcast - sort of self-explanatory, eh? Imaginary Indie Tunes - indie music, mostly from the Pacific Northwest. From the website threeimaginarygirls.com. Rubyfruit Radio - Probably the most ecto-ish podcast I listen to, as it's exclusively independent music with female vocals. A number of ecto favorites, such as Emm Gryner, Ani DiFranco, Vienna Teng, Sleater-Kinney, and Melissa Ferrick have been featured. Some of the stuff that gets played is a bit too pop for my tastes, but it's still worth a listen. It's a lot to ask, I know ... !!! both of these downloadable mp3s have already been chopped up into tracks by various music blogger types. whether or not the mp3s they made are still available for download from those sites though is something i can not say for sure. i'll look around and see what i can find. there is a blog called so much silence which specializes in cutting up these shows -- i would check there first. if i remember correctly, the url is http://somuchsilence.blogspot.com/ >Also: there's a few other live shows (Regina Spektor among them) but no >MP3s to download, alas. >You can play them in Windows Media, but I don't think you can save or >burn to CD. >I don't suppose anyone knows a way to do that?
