Didn't have time to post about this 'til now, but as I was going through my email before starting to type it up, I saw that Woj and Neal had already commented on it. On Thursday, Marc and I went to see the Klezmatics with Susan McKeown at DC's historict 6th and I synagogue. This was the second time I've seen the Klezmatics (the first was about 8 years ago in NYC) and my... uh...seem to have run out of fingers...time seeing Susan. As Woj and Neal have mentioned, Susan has collaborated with the Klezmatics on a couple of new albums based on lyrics that Woody Guthrie wrote, but never set to music. I don't yet have the Hanukkah album, but the earlier release, _Wonder Wheel_, is spectacular. Susan sings lead on two tracks and BVs on most of the others. And though maybe 4 of the songs are undeniably klezmer music, the rest are more of a folk/rock kind of thing (and in fact, "From Here On In" sounds like it could have been composed by Susan!). I gather she's also on the Hanukkah album. The show was an utter blast. I was a little worried at the beginning when the band came out and there was no sign of Susan...I had this fear that they'd trot her out for her two songs and that would be it. This fear did not diminish as the band launched into three straight klezmer songs from older albums. After the third number, the bulk of the band left and lead singer Lorin Sklamberg remained on stage, where he launched into a gorgeous rendition of _Wonder Wheel_'s "Come When I Call You." At this point, I was really starting to wonder about Susan and if she'd made the trip down from NYC, as her vocals are pretty prominent on the recorded version of the song. Happily, when that piece ended, the rest of the band came back to the stage, where they were then joined by Susan and guitarist Boo Reiners. Susan remained on stage for basically the rest of the show, singing lead once (on "Gonna Get Through This World", composed by the Klezmatics' Lisa Gutkin, "for Johnny Cunningham) and duetting or singing BVs on the rest of the songs. I think the last time Marc and I saw Susan live was at a show about a week before Johnny Cunningham passed away. After all those years of xmas shows, it was great fun to see Susan singing along to the Hanukkah songs, chanting niggunim, and even singing along with the yiddish classic "Alle Brider," which had the audience up and dancing in the aisles. Susan had a great rapport with the band, joined in the on-stage banter, and generally was having a ball. At one point, Frank London (keys, trumpet) mentioned that they'd be back in DC as the headlining act for the DC JCC's Jewish Music Festival, and I could see Lorin Sklamberg (lead singer, accordionist) turn to Susan to ask if she'd join them -- she mouthed back, "When is it?" Perhaps my only regret was seeing a Susan McKeown holiday show that didn't feature "Auld Lang Syne" (though to be honest, I always preferred her version with Lindsay Horner to the version she did with Johnny). Still, an incredible night, and highly recommended if you think you have at least a little tolerance for klezmer music. Marc doesn't (I'm not allowed to play any of my klezmer albums in his presence), but he had a great time too... jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2006 00:47:43 -0500 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: re: susan mckeown with the klezmatics Three years ago Susan played with the Klezmatics at Makor on March 17--they were calling it "Purim Patty." The Klezmatics went on first, and though I had some tolerance for klezmer music, at the end of about 45 minutes it was wearing pretty thing--and they went on for at least an hour and a half. At that point, klezmer schmezmer, I was getting set to leave whether or not Susan went on. Good thing she did!
