As you can guess from the titles listed, some are Christmas carols/songs, others are secular wintersongs. It's a good mix of both. It's exactly what you'd expect it to be, listening-wise. The songs are slow and have the usual Sarah melancholy, but it's not a downer. It will probably be on heavy rotation for me this season, but only because I prefer softer, quieter Christmas music. BUT I am a long time fan of Van Dyke Parks' work (the producer/arranger of YS), and he seems to have captured something thoroughly unique in her songs, and my guess is he encouraged the vocal affectations as a way of suiting the production. When Parks conducts, he conducts everyone, including the stars. He is always a collaborator more than simply a producer. And her voice is perfect in this context, I think. For anyone interested in truly odd-ball production, you should get to know some of Parks' work, particularly "Clang of the Yankee Reaper" and his second solo endeavor, "Discover America." He also did a truly strange Japan-only release with a group of musicians from various Asian places, call "P.O.S.H" that explored "South Pacific" themes... it's one of my favorite recordings. He's not credited as the producer, merely "thanked' in the credits, but his finger prints are all over this recording. I wrote a brief review of it that CMJ refused to run in my column back in the late 80s or early 90s: "An utterly charming album is P.O.S.H., by Everything Play aka Ruam Plaeng Orchestra. They call it 21st century international pops, and it has the ambiance of one of Van Dyke Parks' more playful recordings, but set in a southeast Asian mode, using Thai and Javanese instruments and modes in unexpected and sometimes simply silly ways. Fiddles, marimbas, kaen (the Thai mouth accordion), gongs, saws and chimes are blended with synths, drums and voices in child-like fantasias. "Rush Hour In Bangkok" is Pee-Wee's big adventure in Siam made musical. If you've got young kids, they will love this one. If you still remember yourself as a kid, so will you." Parks is best known for his attempted production on the Beach Boys infamous sonic experiment, the ill-fated Parks/Wilson opus "Smile," but his self-named works are truly where you see his genius. cliff furnald - ------------ cdRoots Box 1285, New Haven CT 06505, US unusual music from around the world http://www.cdroots.com cliff@cdroots.com alternate e-mail: rootsworld@snet.net Read more about the world of music in RootsWorld http://www.rootsworld.com/rw/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2006 09:11:30 +1300 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: Tanya's This hungry life I'm enjoying it, though less so than her other releases so far. Odd that it was recorded in 2004 - it's a contemporary of Whiskey Tango Ghosts rather than something new. Seems a peculiar choice for release now. The concert was in Aug 2004, same month that Whiskey was released, so the songs were either written quickly or were ones she decided not to put on Whiskey Tango Ghosts. 'Days of Grace' is a b-side from 2002 (the Sleepwalk ep, aka the Storm single). I never paid much attention to it because 'Last rain' is so pretty, but it's country clothes work well. OCR'ing is better than typing everything in from scratch, but OCR leaves a lot to be desired because there are always lots of mistakes. I need this text to make the web pages (I have someone from The Straight Dope, not a Happy fan, helping me with css) but it all needs to be gone through and cleaned up. I need volunteers to compare the original text (either via their own issues of Rhodeways/Terra, or a jpg image or a pdf that I will provide) with the OCR'd text, and correct mistakes. You don't have to worry about typing in big chunks, formatting, or anything massive. It's simple but pretty fiddly work. One page I found that all of the "o"'s got turned into "a"'s (I've corrected a big chunk of those myself already). On another, the font Sharon used confused the OCR software so all of the "H"'s got turned into [[ or somesuch. In one section "W"'s got turned into VV, "w"'s got turned into vv, stuff like that (I've corrected a lot of those too). In some cases like that a simple Search and Replace will work. Clip art often got turned into {[][[]\\///[[]] type nonsense. That kind of stuff can just be deleted. I just need pure text that I can copy and paste directly into an html page. It shouldn't be that big a deal, and I'd do it myself, but I'm involved in figuring out how to get the pages to look good and then I'll be involved with the html and css. Sharon did a lot of hard work for us Happy fans, and I want to show her baby off and do it proud. There are lots of great interviews and tidbits in these fanzines. Help me do that, pretty please? Please please don't use FrontPage. Left to defaults it creates pages viewable only on Microsoft computers running IE. Plus, the code it creates is horribly dirty and very difficult for hand cleanup or revising in any other program. Once you have the OCR and placement finished, you can create a PDF from that, which should be searchable. Then you can publish it to the Web along with the HTML pages. Some browsers can read PDFs directly, but of course not search them. There is no advantage to trying to force a web site to exactly resemble a print publication; but if you use a page-layout program that has the option of creating PDFs, you can assemble your OCR'd text and images into a dupe of the original magazine and PDF that. I still have my Rhodeways somewhere. Appreciate your work doing this. Michael ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #317 ***************************
