I disagree on one point there. The Beatles, Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, all do 'pop' music, but are they superficial and disposable? I don't think so. I just have a different definition of what 'pop music' means. Some can do pop really, really well so that it is pop but also art. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Share your latest news with your friends with the Windows Live Spaces friends module. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 09:55:01 -0800 From: Greg Bossert Subject: OT: archiving vinyl to digital i reckon someone here has transfered vinyl albums to CD or mp3. i've done it myself, but via a complicated array of gadgets and software that most people would find silly. an friend is trying to buy a gadget or two to let her husband digitize his vast (even on ecto terms) collection of vinyl. i know he has a Mac laptop and i think an older iMac. anyone have any suggestions i could pass on? again, either a stand alone device to record to CD and/or gadgets to go to mp3s or the like on the Mac would be of interest. thanks in advance...! - -g - -- www.suddensound.com -- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 10:46:03 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: OT: archiving vinyl to digital I simply used my turntable connected to a pre-amp (cheap from Radio Shack) connected to the sound in for my Mac (the regular, not a special sound card) and a fairly inexpensive piece of software called Sound Studio, which saved the files to the hard drive and which I could use to normalize the sound, etc. and which made aiff files I then burned to CD. I'm sure the resulting discs are not audiophile quality, but they're still pretty good. - --Neile On Thu, 16 Nov 2006, Greg Bossert wrote: > i reckon someone here has transfered vinyl albums to CD or mp3. i've > done it myself, but via a complicated array of gadgets and software > that most people would find silly. an friend is trying to buy a > gadget or two to let her husband digitize his vast (even on ecto > terms) collection of vinyl. i know he has a Mac laptop and i think > an older iMac. anyone have any suggestions i could pass on? again, > either a stand alone device to record to CD and/or gadgets to go to > mp3s or the like on the Mac would be of interest. thanks in advance...! > -g > > -- www.suddensound.com -- > > - -- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net .... http://www.sff.net/people/neile Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music . http://www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ...... http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 13:57:50 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: OT: archiving vinyl to digital Hi, Greg Bossert wrote: > i reckon someone here has transfered vinyl albums to CD or mp3. i've > done it myself, but via a complicated array of gadgets and software > that most people would find silly. an friend is trying to buy a > gadget or two to let her husband digitize his vast (even on ecto > terms) collection of vinyl. i know he has a Mac laptop and i think > an older iMac. anyone have any suggestions i could pass on? I Googled "vinyl to mp3" and got a slew of good stuff, but perhaps most interesting is the USB turntable (example here: http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/usb-turntable/index.html). Now there's a gadget that I *knew* had to be out there somewhere... - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 13:10:54 -0600 From: "Ken Blake" Subject: Re: OT: archiving vinyl to digital On 11/16/06, Greg Bossert wrote: > i reckon someone here has transfered vinyl albums to CD or mp3. i've > done it myself, but via a complicated array of gadgets and software > that most people would find silly. an friend is trying to buy a > gadget or two to let her husband digitize his vast (even on ecto > terms) collection of vinyl. i know he has a Mac laptop and i think > an older iMac. anyone have any suggestions i could pass on? again, > either a stand alone device to record to CD and/or gadgets to go to > mp3s or the like on the Mac would be of interest. thanks in advance...! > -g I also want to start ripping my vinyl records. A while back I read about the Ion usb turntable which from reviews made it sound like it makes it much easier. Also the usb connector supposedly has much better sound quality (or less interference) than the normal line in jack. Does anyone have experience with it? What kind of quality do you really get? It will accept a line out from your preamp/receiver so you can convert other things beside LPs to digital. Quality is excellent. If you don't have something to raise your magnetic cartridge level and apply the RIAA curve, the combo is supposed to be able to do this as well - but I haven't tried it. It does have a buttload of gain and it's pretty low-noise. - -----Original Message----- >From: Greg Bossert >Sent: Nov 16, 2006 12:55 PM >To: "Ectophiles fuzzy [place]" >Subject: OT: archiving vinyl to digital > >i reckon someone here has transfered vinyl albums to CD or mp3. i've >done it myself, but via a complicated array of gadgets and software >that most people would find silly. an friend is trying to buy a >gadget or two to let her husband digitize his vast (even on ecto >terms) collection of vinyl. i know he has a Mac laptop and i think >an older iMac. anyone have any suggestions i could pass on? again, >either a stand alone device to record to CD and/or gadgets to go to >mp3s or the like on the Mac would be of interest. thanks in advance...! >-g > >-- www.suddensound.com -- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #306 ***************************
