It's nice to know that people are watching and enjoying. I'm thrilled that finally the technology/timing is right to be able to share these with other people. I've long felt guilty that we've had all these tapes up on shelves and in drawers, unseen by all but a very very few lucky (because we're horribly bad at getting around to making dubs) people. Anybody heard Joanna Newsom's Ys yet? Marvelous record and one where she's fully grown into her artistic vision. I recommend it highly. I only started listening to it yesterday, and I'm on my third time round in a row. Definitely ecto material, and highly recommended. I've been wracking my brains for comparisons, but have trouble finding any that do it justice: Bjork colliding with PJ Harvey in a soft, misty and mysterious place is about the best I can do, but it's definitely a beautiful, haunting album, and well worth tracking down. I've been thoroughly jaded this year, and this is one of the very, very few new albums that have excited me to this extent. Meanwhile, the Peter Hammill remasters/re-issues continue, the latest batch including "Over", "The Future Now" "ph7" and "A Black Box", each complete with explanatory notes and lyrics and the odd bonus track. Unfortunately, the thoroughly atypical, jokey "Polaroid", which graced the US vinyl of "ph7" doesn't make an appearance, but it's a small matter. I've actually been reassessing my opinions of his solo work based on these, and already I'm seriously revising my previously negative take on "Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night" from the last batch, so I look forward to listening to "Over" -- never one of my favourites -- with fresh ears. Hammill remains, as always, something of an acquired taste, but he's a vastly underrated talent, one of those unknown seminal figures whose influence has been a stealthy thing and whose profile has always been frustratingly low. Joanne Newsom's "Ys" has been getting phenonemal reviews over here: I've read at least three five-star ones, and the superlatives have been piling up. Hard to say from the samples I've heard, and there seems to be dissent among the reviewers over at amazon.co.uk, so while I'm intrigued I think I might wait to see if the price comes down before I risk it. adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2006 15:08:14 -0500 From: dan st ark <2005.carnivore99@verizon.net> Subject: Heroes No music content, but has anyone else been following Heroes on NBC? After seeing the first few episodes I got to wondering if the people behind Wonderfalls might have anything to do with it, so on a whim I did a search and discovered that indeed, Wonderfalls co-creator and writer Bryan Fuller (who also worked on the later Star Trek incarnations) also writes for, and executive produces this one. Then I jumped over to Tim Minear's site and found that while he apparently has nothing to do with Heroes, he's got his own series coming up soon called Drive, about "a sinister, cross-country road race." Ha! Just thought these might be of interest to former Buffy/Angel/Wonderfalls fans here considering the minds behind them... Bryan Fuller was also behind the unrated and too-soon cancelled "Dead Like Me", which likewise seemed to be an ecto sort o' show... me, i'm watching Happy these days, thanks to Vickie and Chris ;-) - -g - -- www.suddensound.com -- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #297 ***************************
