Turned out there was an ecto tie-in. The day before I left, I ran across two different Latin American singing groups in the subway. It wasn't Argentine music, but I realized it had been awhile since I'd heard that particular sort of Latin music played on the trains. Turned out that was sort of a prelude. The morning after I got to Buenos Aires, I was in a shop when I heard Kate Bush singing "Reaching Out," coming over the radio. Which made me remember... The last time I was in Argentina was 15 years ago. I had been introduced to Kate Bush only within the previous six months, and had only heard *Hounds of Love,* *The Kick Inside,* and *The Dreaming.* I was listening to them quite a lot at that time, but that was before iPods, so I didn't bring my music with me to Argentina. In the middle of that trip I was in Bariloche, a fairly touristy ski-town in the mountains, when I heard "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" coming over the radio. I'd never (to my knowledge) heard Kate Bush on the radio before, so it struck me in a memorable way. Now, coming back to Buenos Aires 15 years later it felt as if I was being welcomed back. Of course I wondered if perhaps they just play more Kate Bush on the radio down there--but at least for the rest of our trip, most of the radio I heard was fairly horrible late '70s/early '80s lite rock. And then, the day I was leaving--I was in a car on the way to the airport; since it's spring down there, we had the windows open. Wafting over the traffic, from a neighboring car, came strains of Sarah MacLachlan singing "Silence" (off the Delerium album). It was as if my stay in Argentina had been a movie, and we'd reached the closing credits. Karl Jung would have been proud. BTW I picked up a few albums in Argentina. One day on the street I caught the end of a song being played in a music store. I went in and asked what it was, and eventually wound up buying an album by Ricardo Arjona called *Adentro.* As things turn out, though, I don't like it much--even though the Spanish lyrics seem somewhat interesting, musically it's basically just cheesy ballads, and I'd just caught the 30 seconds that made it seem like something else (when played at loud volume over a heavily-trafficked street). I also got an album by Presuntos Implicados based on my having seen a video of theirs that I'd liked ("Gente"), but so far this album (*Postales*) doesn't impress me much. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presuntos_Implicados I also picked up an album by La Oreja de Van Gogh but I haven't heard it yet. pb ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2006 22:25:59 -0500 From: Doug Subject: Goldfrapp I just saw a commercial for the Motorola Krzr...it featured Ooh La La by Goldfrapp as the soundtrack. With good reason. _Supernature_ was by far my roll-down-the-windows-and-blast-it album of this year.
